A road-rage incident late Wednesday night in Lancaster led to a scuffle that ended when one of the combatants pulled out a gun and accidentally shot himself in the leg, Lancaster police said today. Detectives believe the incident started at about 10:30 p.m., when someone reportedly cut someone else off in traffic on Ransom Road. A chase ensued, involving two individuals on motorcycles and one in another vehicle. A short distance away on Ransom, at least one of the motorcyclists and the motorist confronted each other, and the motorist pulled out a gun. "The one male points the gun at...

"The weapons' menacing looks, coupled with the public's confusion over fully-automatic machine guns versus semi-automatic assault weapons anything that looks like a machine gun is assumed to be a machine gun can only increase the chance of public support for restrictions on these weapons." - Josh Sugarmann, executive director of the Violence Policy Center (VPC) - 1989 Twenty years ago, when Sugarman made the above quote, the universe of "black rifles" and those who possessed them was a small fraction of what it is today. Now, the AR-15 is the most popular rifle in the country and other...

Clark County Shooting Park dedication triggers assertions of gun rights support Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., tells of shooting a jack rabbit in his youth at Tuesday's dedication of the Clark County Shooting Park in the northern valley. Reid, Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., Republican Gov. Jim Gibbons and Democratic gubernatorial candidate and Harry Reid progeny Rory Reid all took turns declaring their support for gun rights in Nevada. Everyone knows Sen. Harry Reid is tough on political foes, but he's even tougher on jack rabbits. Wielding an antique .22- caliber rifle Tuesday, Reid, D-Nev., told an audience...

What an incredible weekend I had. The Steel Challenge was the BEST. My mom says my revolver is still Âsmoking! I finished 8th out of 18 revolver shooters, all kindred spirits! I reached my goal to beat my personal best score shooting the main match with my revolver (over ten seconds off my last score!) And I am gaining on John Bagakis! Shhh, hereÂs a secret: Tina, his girlfriend sent me text messages cheering me on! Re-match next year John ď? Same hot, dusty place, same hot dusty time!

Gun owners may be arguing among themselves and with gun-control activists about it, but for Mustapha Kassou, theres no debate over the open-carry movement thrust into nationwide controversy this month when pistol- and rifle-packing citizens showed up near several public appearances by President Barack Obama. Kassou was working the cash register in the Richmond, Va., market he owns on July 11 when a gunman stormed the store with robbery on his mind. In an incident captured on surveillance video, the bandit ordered the eight customers to the floor and pumped two bullets from his snub-nosed pistol into Kassou, who...

Nebraska is gun country, the sort of place where one of the newsroom hunters sometimes brings deer jerky from a white-tail buck he shot himself to share with colleagues. We have no problems with responsible gun ownership. But the sight of gun-carrying citizens and protesters gathering near locations where President Barack Obama is scheduled to speak creeps us out. Stop it.

It was repeatedly panned by the critics. But movie-goers loved it. And thirty-five years later, it remains a cult classic. Death Wish celebrates 35 years, this summer. It was released in theaters on July 24, 1974, and was directed by Michael Winner and produced by the Dino De Laurentiis Company I watched it again over the weekend, and it stands the test of time (thought its funny to take Jeff Goldblum seriously as a murderous gang thug). In fact, now in the Obama administrationwith police called stupid and impliedly racist by the President and our Second Amendment gun rights under...

There are two universes of American gun culture. In one universe, the Second Amendment is a stanchion of protected American freedoms, as sacred as free speech. In this universe, when the right to bear arms dies, so does a free America. In another universe, guns make blood run in our city streets. They kill and maim criminals and innocent alike, make good people prisoners in their own homes. Last week in New Jersey, it wasn't hard to visit both universes. At the Riverdale Pistol Club Range in Passaic County, instructors from the National Rifle Association were teaching first-timers how to...

It was a humble Christian man, adopted as Kentucky's own, who was known to French Field Marshall Ferdinand Foch as the first soldier of America and known to General Pershing as America's greatest doughboy (a nick-name American soldiers of that generation picked up during the dusty marches of the Spanish American War). Until Pershing selected Samuel Woodfill as one of three American soldiers to be honored at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in 1921, Woodfill had lived in the same obscurity his name and story would return to generations later. At the time, a Congressional Medal of Honor winner...

U.S. Border Patrol agents successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle a semiautomatic handgun into Mexico, the agency reported Friday. Agents arrested a Mexican citizen who tried to pass through southbound inspections Thursday at the San Luis port of entry, according to a Border Patrol news statement. A Browning .22-caliber semiautomatic handgun was concealed in the subject's waistband, according to the statement. The subject was living in the United States as a legally admitted resident alien but did not have the proper documentation to carry a concealed weapon or export a firearm. Firearms and ammunition are illegal in Mexico. Since April,...

The attack on Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett has not changed his views on guns. Good. He should continue to push for sensible restrictions. The attack on Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett has sparked a bit of chatter on guns - including how the attack makes the case for a state concealed-carry law. No. For the record, the attack hasn't caused the mayor to change his well-known preference for sensible gun legislation, his office says.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A state lawmaker wants to let Michigan residents who have permits to carry concealed weapons take them on university campuses. Legislation announced Thursday by Republican state Sen. Randy Richardville of Monroe would remove college campuses from the list of places where Michigan law does not allow permit holders to carry guns. Richardville says crimes occur on college campuses just like in other places. He argues people with the proper training and background checks to get a permit should be allowed to carry guns for their protection while on campus. The bill will face opposition from groups...

We are honoring a unique and creative patriot today, he is the President of Max Motors in Butler, MO. I first learned of Mr. Muller through my husband when he came home from work one day. He got me on the computer and told me to go to YouTube, saying there was something I had to see. There was Mark interviewing with a reporter on CNN. He was superb in his representation and extremely quick-witted. I would say he did an exceptional job and took over the interview, standing out far beyond the reporter. They interviewed him based on his...

Sorry, Mandatory Gun Registration Is Constitutional Posted by Declan McCullagh Mandatory gun regulation has long been the bęte noire of Second Amendment advocates, who worry that it's the final step before firearm confiscation. The surprise is that, even after last year's landmark Supreme Court ruling on gun rights, mandatory registration could be constitutional. It may not be the wisest public policy. It may not be practical. But after the D.C. v. Heller decision, it also may not violate the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. That question is at the heart of a second lawsuit underway against the city of...

MIDLAND, Texas (CBS/AP) An embarrassed Sheriff Gary Painter fired one Midland County deputy and suspended three others without pay after a scantily dressed waitress holding a rifle posed for photographs on the trunk of a patrol vehicle. Round Rock officers were dispatched to the restaurant after someone reported the waitress with the weapon, which had been given to her by one of the deputies who had been attending a training session near Austin. The incident occurred last week in the parking lot of a Twin Peaks Restaurant and Bar, which promotes its "fun, friendly and sometimes flirty atmosphere!" The deputies...

"I will not personally travel in a state where civilians carry loaded weapons onto the sidewalks and as a means of political protest," travel guide legend Arthur Frommer told his loyal readers earlier this week. And that means, he wrote, that he won't be going to Arizona anytime soon and may suggest that others join him in an "open boycott." He added that: I would feel as I do regardless of the political identity of the speaker whom these thugs attempted to intimidate. The continued tolerance of extremists carrying guns is a frightening development which strikes at the heart of...

We talked yesterday about anti-gun David Michaels, Obama's pick to head the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. And we saw that a "public health" excuse for infringing on the right to keep and bear arms has been used in the past. Continuing from "Second Opinion: Measuring the Violence": A pilot project at CDC in the 1990s to monitor firearm fatalities drew ire from gun advocates and was stopped after three years. Now all money appropriated to CDC to study injuries comes with a stipulation from Congress that the funds cannot be used to advocate for gun control. Why was that?...

The newbie shooter can become familiar with the operation and feel of his/her weapon without the distraction of flash or recoil or audible concussion. Long arms can be taught just as well with the aid of a device called a chamber insert. It is little more than a precisely milled tube in the dimensions of a .308 cartridge that is sized to accept .32 pistol cartridges inside. The assembly of pistol cartridge and .308 insert is then chambered in any .308 rifle.

Milwaukee, WI Mayor Tom Barrett was leaving the WI state fair on Saturday night when he heard a woman scream for help. I would like to start by offering my best wishes for a speedy recovery to Mayor Barrett. His willingness to come to the aid of a stranger,...

Authorities announced charges Thursday against a Mexican gang that took Tijuana-style violence to the upscale suburbs of San Diego County, kidnapping, torturing and killing well-to-do residents, even after some families paid large ransoms. The gang, a rogue cell of the Tijuana-based Arellano Felix drug cartel, moved across the border in 2002 and posed as U.S. law enforcement, donning FBI and police uniforms and caps while snatching victims outside homes and public places, said San Diego County prosecutors. Nine victims were killed from 2004 to 2007, and the bodies of two of them were dissolved in chemicals at a rented house...

Family in tow for a tour of national treasures far from Washington, President Barack Obama is trailed by criticism from gun opponents and parks advocates for allowing firearms into such majestic places as this. A 72-year-old Harlem business owner turned Bernie Goetz on four would-be robbers this afternoon, pulling a pump-action shot gun from beneath his desk and opening fire, killing two and wounding the others, cops said. The four men barged into Kaplan Bros. Blue Flame Corp. -- a restaurant supply company at 523 W. 125th St. -- around 3 p.m. and one of them pulled out a handgun and began pistol whipping an employee. That prompted the owner to pull out the 12-gauge shotgun and fire three shots, striking all four men, cops said. The four robbers ran, but two collapsed to...

The Constitutions 1st Amendment is no more sacred to looney left Bolsheviks than any other provision they nitpick to death. Like America's first soldiers at the Battle of Brooklyn, Michael Littlejohn is fighting for his right to bear arms. The Revolutionary War buff charges the Bloomberg administration with tyranny for trying to seize his handmade flintlock rifle - a dead ringer for the weapon once used against the redcoats. BRISTOL, Fla. -- Authorities said a burglar with a fake gun was shot and killed by a Panhandle homeowner with a real gun. The Liberty County Sheriff's Office reports that Octavious Barnes, 24, broke into the home of Bradley Harvil, 82, home and tried to steal about $1,100 in cash Sunday night. Authorities said Barnes was waiving around a toy pistol, colored black with a marker to look real, and assaulted Harvil. The homeowner was able to get to his real .357 magnum and shot Barnes in the chest and in the eye. Authorities later concluded that three women had...

Libertarians decry defeat of concealed carry amendmentS. 845 would have protected constitutional rights WASHINGTON -- Americas third largest party Wednesday criticized senators voting against an amendment establishing concealed carry reciprocity between all states and reminded them voters have a record of holding gun rights opponents accountable on Election Day. Libertarians are no-compromise defenders of your constitutionally-protected right to keep and bear arms, said Donny Ferguson, Libertarian National Committee Communications Director. I find it ironic that many of the senators who rightfully believe one states same-sex marriage licenses should be recognized in all states are now not willing to extend that...

In any case, it was night after night of one hour lectures until it became apparent (to certain viewers) this news special was little more than what we would now term an infomercial for Lyndon Johnsons Urban Renewal Program, a scheme to redistribute massive amounts of tax dollars to rebuild blighted inner city neighborhoods accompanied by the complete destruction of the social and economic fabric of existing communities. Variants of this program still exist around the country today, with the same outcome. But in the 1960s it was something new and untried.

The ATF - as expected - has issued a letter in which it disregards the 10th Amendment restrictions on federal power (as seems to be the trend since the late 1930) and has notified Tennessees federal firearms dealers that the Tennessee Firearms Freedom Act is meaningless. Essentially, ATF is saying to the state of Tennessee that the 10th Amendment no longer exists. We expected such from a tyranny that no longer lives within the bounds of its express authority
