Just found out from her son -- he found her on the floor of her bedroom. Kristy had a host of health conditions she'd been battling for literally decades, including progressively severe hypoxemia (low blood oxygen), but still this was unexpected. She was 60 years old. She loved this place, and was quite active on the prayer threads. Kristy and I met on FR six years ago, and over time we became the very best of friends. I loved her dearly. Don't know what else to say, other than my soul feels like it has a gigantic hole in it....

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- The next time you get your pay check you'll notice a little less money as the state is now holding more of your income. It's not a new tax, but rather more of an interest free loan. Starting Nov. 1, the state increased the amount of money withheld in your paycheck by 10-percent. It was part of the budget package approved back in February, but it collects no additional tax revenue as it just gives the state the money earlier.

On Saturday, millions watched as Ted Kennedy made his final trip to Arlington National Cemetery. With rather less attention, Arlington's soil opened again Monday to accept the remains of one of Kennedy's former aides, 40-year-old Bill Cahir. The deceased, an Alexandria resident, was unknown to most Americans, but he did no less for his country than his old boss -- and, gauged by the last full measure of devotion, he did even more. He went from his job working for Kennedy in the Senate to become, at various points, a Washington journalist and a failed congressional candidate. But it was...

Religious police in Saudi Arabia are cracking down on summer festivals and circuses intended by the government to boost domestic tourism, because they violate strict religious restrictions on singing, dancing, the mixing of unrelated men and women, and "evil" circus performances, Reuters reported. Conservative clerics backed by powerful members of the Saudi royal family oppose the efforts to liberalize the world's biggest oil exporter. Circus acts such as fire-eating and lying on a bed of glass are seen as forms of magic outlawed by Sharia law. "These acts contradict the faith and must not be done, taught, spread or encouraged,"...

"On June 30th Major Chris Galloway took his own life. He had come back from Afghanistan in April, and things just weren’t the same we’re told." "Why’d we lose him? Who the hell knows. There is no rational reason for doing such a thing, so using reason to figure it out is both impossible and ineffectual. It accomplishes nothing. In the end, he’s still gone. The comment thread about the loss of one of Flopping Aces' own, Maj. Chris Galloway, has all of us doing some head scratching as to what we can do as individuals. This sense of helplessness, *after* the loss, is simply not acceptable. Of course, I was right about that - you didn’t have to be Nostradamus. Pinter attacked the US government as if it were the modern avatar of the Third Reich. He used his Nobel Prize acceptance speech, in the words of the Washington Post, to denounce the U.S. invasion of Iraq and to call British prime minister Tony Blair “a deluded idiot.” What...

Harold Pinter, praised as the most influential British playwright of his generation and a longtime voice of political protest, has died after a long battle with cancer. He was 78. "Pinter restored theater to its basic elements: an enclosed space and unpredictable dialogue, where people are at the mercy of each other and pretense crumbles," the Nobel Academy said when it announced Pinter's award. "With a minimum of plot, drama emerges from...

It was a scene of unity in the face of extreme tragedy Friday night. As bagpipes pierced the cold air with the melancholy notes of "Amazing Grace" before Catholic's 48-20 win over Scott at Blaine Stadium, Catholic's cheerleaders locked arms at midfield with their Scott counterparts, who each clutched a single rose wrapped in a prayer blanket. But there were unseen gaps in the line. Four Scott County cheerleaders were killed in a car wreck last Friday. . . .
