Photo by Oleg Volk, Rifle is a Remington model 8 SB-374 is the bill on Governor Brown's desk that would ban most centerfire hunting rifles that are semi-automatics in California.  It is clear that this is another long slide down the slippery slope of gun confiscation.  I say ban, because anyone who bothers to consider it can see that gun registration is gun confiscation in slow motion. Here is a short list of additional rifles that will be required to be registered.  The legal supply will be cut off.  No more will be legally allowed into the state.  Notice...

TEMPLE (June 10, 2013)—A man who used a long-barreled pump action rifle to rob a Temple convenience store and then fled to a waiting truck as the store’s owner fired at him, remained at large Monday, police said. The robbery was reported just before 11 p.m. Friday at Central Food Mart at 2004 North 3rd Street in Temple. The victims told officers that the man, whom they described as a light-skinned black, was wearing a gray or white hooded sweatshirt, dark jeans and a white cloth over his face when he entered the store, pointed the rifle at them and...

Illinois State Police say they’re trying to deal with a huge backlog of applications for Firearms Owner Identification cards. The agency received more than 28,000 applications for cards during April alone. That’s on top of an existing backlog of nearly 76,000 applications. The state police say they are dealing with a record number of applications. State police are supposed to approve or deny applications within 30 days. The agency says its understaffed due to budget cuts and is having trouble meeting the deadline. Every month since December has seen a record number of Illinois residents applying for FOID cards. Officials...
  • Why the 50 Meter Zero? (rifle marksmanship)

Why the 50 Meter Zero? Rourke linked to an excellent pictorial about ballistic trajectories from different zero's over at M4.com. Let's look at the trajectory using a 25 meter zero. If you look the bullet path is 8 inches high from roughly 125m to250m. This is a real problem. This is enough of a problem that folks will miss targets. In fact that is what happened. My informal understanding of the development of the 50 meter zero is as follows. Dudes were missing Tango's in the 100-150 meter range which was pretty close to the max range guys found themselves...

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A man who walks around his neighborhood with a rifle strapped to his back says he is not a threat to harm anyone, but some neighbors fear he is an incident of vigilante justice waiting to happen. John Schultz, 19, also wears a bullet-proof vest, carries ammunition and has a knife in a holster as he walks through Walnut Creek, which is off Sunset Road in north Charlotte. The gun is his grandfather’s 303 British Enfield from WWII. His walks cause double-takes as well as safety concerns for some. Schultz says others thank him and wave at...

This upcoming Friday, April 5, will be the 5th year anniversary of the death of Charlton Heston, one of the greatest actors of all time. His best known roles include The Ten Commandments, The Greatest Story Ever Told, The Agony and the Ecstasy, Ben-Hur, The Greatest Show on Earth, Midway, Planet of the Apes, and Beneath the Planet of the Apes. But Chuck was also known for his political activism. He was originally a liberal Democrat, even supporting the Gun Control Act of 1968 (when asked why he did that, he replied, “I was young and foolish”). But soon aftewards...

FSA jihadist rebels are now using the most advanced sniper rifle available today. The AS-50 is used by the Navy SEALS and will penetrate steel and concrete from an extremely long range. How long before this rifle is used to kill Israeli soldiers patrolling the Syrian border, FSA rebels have already started taking potshots at patrolling Israeli Soldiers in the past week, imagine what they can do now with the mother of all urban warfare Sniper rifles in their possession?. We know that the most of the weapons that the U.S is funneling to the FSA ends up in the...

The Ohio man known to America as “Joe the Plumber” is raffling off an AR-15 rifle to protest discussion of a ban on assault weapons. “Despite what national news commentators say, the AR 15 is NOT an ‘assault weapon’ or ‘weapon of mass destruction,’” he wrote at JoeForAmerica.com. “In honor of this magnificent rifle, JoeForAmerica.com is giving away a new AR 15 to the lucky man or woman who wins this drawing.” Joe the Plumber, whose real name is Samuel Joe Wurzelbacher, sprang onto the national stage during the 2008 campaign when President Barack Obama and then-GOP presidential candidate John...

"Behold the Girandoni rifle, a 20 round high capacity tubular magazine which fired at roughly the same velocity as a modern .45 ACP. It can punch straight through a 2x4 at 100 yards. Invented by Tyrollean Bartholomaus Girandoni around 1779, this revolutionary rifle is four feet long and weighs a manly 10 pounds. It's semi-automatic rate of fire and, for the period, its immense firepower reserve made it a fearsome thing to contemplate in battle." ...

Considering an upgrade into. 308 Winchester for some long shooting. Mostly predator hunting but also some competition. Lots of folks pointing me to the Remington 700 but I'm not getting real excited about that particular gun. Don't like that particular nylon stock and the action seems loose. Leaning toward Savage but would like some opinions.

Mossberg is adding four new models of MVP—Mossberg Varmint Predator—rifles to their catalog for 2013. The new rifles make up the Patrol series, and are compact workhorse bolt guns chambered in 5.56 NATO and 300 AAC Blackout. Obviously marketed towards law enforcement and other civil servants that could use a good rifle, the MVP Patrol rifles will no doubt find homes with shooters of all types. The MVP is a Mossberg 4×4 that accepts AR-15 box magazines. Otherwise it’s a straightforward bolt-action rifle with eyes on simplicity and accuracy while still keeping costs down. The Patrol rifles differ from the...
  • Sandy Hook - it doesn't pass the smell test.

Though I have never thought of myself as a conspiracy nut, there are just some things about this incident that don’t pass the smell test for me. Perhaps there are some of you out there who can help me through some of this confusion. I speak as someone who owns many guns, including a couple AR-15 variants. (Well, maybe I’m a nut after all.) But, be that as it may, I think I have a few unanswered questions that haven’t been mentioned before on this topic. 1) A day after the shooting occurred, NBC News and the morning show in...

This is a great video showing the absurdity of the "assault weapons" ban. The current leftist talking point going around is, "Who needs an assault weapon." Many in the soccer mom crowd buy the talking point, because they have no understanding of how guns work. In this video, Officer Pyle of the San Jose Police Department explains how semi-automatic weapons really work, and that internally guns that "look evil" are identical to those which "look good." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysf8x477c30

I'm looking for a recommendation for a gun for my son for Christmas. Just to lay out the basics - he just turned 15 and is about 6'3" and weighs 235. Yes, he plays high school football. His mother and I have been divorced for many years, and she absolutely forbids him to have anything to do with guns in or near her home. His cousin recently received a .22 pistol, and my son's mom wouldn't let him hold it. I don't know whether she knows (but I assume she does) that he has shot my HK .40 USP along...

The FBI has released their 2007-2011 “Murder Victims by Weapon” report. The results are contradictory to anti-gun industry claims that relaxing the ban on assault weapons will cause more crime. The report indicates you are more likely to be killed by hands or feet than by a rifle or shotgun. Since 2007 there has been a 16.2% decline in murders committed with personal weapons which are defined as “hands, fists, feet etc.” The number of murders of this type in 2011 totaled 728. While gun ownership has dramatically increased since 2007, murders for both the shotgun and rifle categories have...

What’s even more American than turkey, cranberries and pumpkin pie these days? An Italian gun, that’s what. The only known surviving firearm that crossed the wild Atlantic aboard the good ship Mayflower, settled with the pilgrims at Plymouth Colony and ultimately helped the first colonists not only survive, but prosper. Meet the Mayflower Gun. The GunAffectionately dubbed the Mayflower Gun and thought of as an American icon, the gun is actually an Italian-made wheel-lock carbine. This single-shot musket was originally chambered in .50 caliber rifle, though ages of heavy use have worn away the majority of the rifling. Given...

Long range is, by definition, a relative term. When the earliest European settlers arrived on the east coast of what would become the United States of America they were armed with a collection of match, wheel lock, and snaphaunce actuated firearms that were, occasionally, more dangerous to the user than the intended victim. Among the immigrants were gentlemen adventurers on the prowl for quick riches, families looking to build a new life, and others who sought religious freedom; all who drilled with these firearms under the under the leadership of the likes of Captain John Smith, in the Virginias, and...
