The slow, painful demise of Sears continues. The struggling retailer, which also owns equally troubled Kmart, reported a loss of $471 million in the first quarter, worse than a year ago. Sales fell more than 8%. Sears (SHLD) also announced that it may sell three of its iconic brands -- Kenmore, Craftsman and DieHard. The company said it is looking at strategic alternatives for its Home Services installation and repair businesses as well. These three brands -- dubbed KCD by the company -- are still well-known and popular. In a pre-recorded call for analysts and investors, CFO Rob Schriesheim said...

The dumpster fire that is the national superstore known as Target has had quite a rough time lately. And is it any wonder? They can’t seem to get their act together when it comes to pleasing their customers. First they ban guns within their stores because “safety.” Then they began allowing men into women’s restrooms because “equality.” Then they are currently suing a guy who stopped another guy from stabbing a girl to death because…well, because they’re dumb. The American people responded, and as can be expected, Target’s ship has begun to sink. Not only did well over a million...

CNBC’s Jim Cramer, host of “Mad Money,” said in an interview with TheStreet, Inc. that Target’s first quarter earnings report “stung.” Cramer said he had originally thought Target would be impervious to the effects Amazon has had on retailers and added Target has now “confused itself.” “I got to fall on my sword here,” Cramer said. “I thought that Target under Brian Cornell had made it so he was less Amazon-able and less worried about the consumer. The mix was not good. Apparel was not good, electronics not good; the guidance — horrendous. You know, we’ve been having such a...

For people who enjoy it, bargain-hunting combines all of the primal fun of hunting with no threat of being trampled by an antelope. That’s why, amid recent fretting that American department stores and malls are doomed, there remains a bright spot in the retail business. TJX, parent company of off-price stores T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, and HomeGoods, reported better-than-expected results this quarter, unlike its department store competitors. It isn’t just residual frugality from the Great Recession that’s sending shoppers to off-price stores. That explains why department stores from Lord & Taylor to Macy’s to Kohl’s are rushing to open their own...

In an attempt to calm the anger of the more than 1.2 million consumers who have pledged to boycott the store, the CEO announced the store’s plans to implement family bathrooms in all of its stores for people who may not feel comfortable in the traditional stall-by-stall bathrooms. “We’re committed over the next few months to make sure every one of our stores has that option, because we want to make sure that our guests be welcomed in our stores,” he explained. “But if there’s a question of safety, I can tell you and others, our focus on safety is...

Target Corp. (TGT) stock has plunged approximately 12% less than a month after the organization declared that its transgender customers and employees could utilize "...the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity." Over 1.2 million people have signed the American Family Association’s "Boycott Target Pledge," in a massive display of consumer backlash against the retail chain. Walmart stock has also declined about 6.9% during the same period making it unclear at this point whether Target's depressed stock is related to their social policy or some other factor. Target issued its pronouncement just about a month after...

Macy's dismal first-quarter results are bringing back unwelcome memories of the financial crisis, as the retailer on Wednesday reported two metrics that harken back to that period of economic malaise. During the first quarter, the department store chain said its comparable sales fell 5.6 percent. That marks a deceleration from its fourth-quarter same-store sales decline of 4.3 percent, and represents its most severe decrease in this metric since the second quarter of 2009. During that quarter, Macy's comparable sales slid 9.5 percent. Meanwhile, the retailer reported a 36 percent year-over-year drop in operating income. That not only marks its seventh...

Amazon.com, the popular online retailer, is reportedly under pressure from shareholders to stop selling products associated with Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president. According to the New York Post, a group claiming to represent 1,500 Amazon shareholders has asked CEO Jeff Bezos to end its marketing of Trump shirts, hats, ties and other products promoting the Trump campaign. “This isn’t about politics: Donald Trump’s misogyny, racism and outright bigotry are dominating the political news cycle,” shareholder group UltraViolet said in a letter to Bezos. The letter noted the continued presence of Donald Trump products “poses a risk to...

vAmazon giveth, and Amazon taketh. The giant internet retailer said on April 27 that it will create 2,000 full-time jobs by opening two more fulfillment centers in New Jersey. One will be a 600,000-square-foot facility in Florence, Burlington County, generating 500 new jobs. The other will be an 800,000-square-foot fulfillment center in Carteret, Middlesex County, that will generate about 1,500 jobs. Together, the two facilities will bring Amazon's total physical footprint in the Garden State to 2.5 million square feet of space, if you count three existing centers. The irony is that Amazon made the announcement the day after a...

JCPenney, faced with unexpected light sales in mid-April, slashed payroll, froze overtime and took other drastic cost-cutting steps in an attempt to protect its bottom line, The Post has learned. As the end of its first fiscal quarter approached, the mid-priced department store told store managers to take the emergency measures because the chain faced “an expense challenge,” according to an internal memo obtained by The Post. “We have an expense challenge for the month of April and are asking all stores to do their fair share by closely monitoring all expenses,” the memo said. Employees were stunned when their...

Aeropostale used to be one of the most popular teen retailers. Cheaper than Abercrombie & Fitch, and less bohemian than American Eagle, the brand was the go-to for teens who still wanted to fit in with the trends. But those days are gone. The retailer has filed for bankruptcy protection, though it says it will be out of debt in six months. Last June, Crain's New York reported that the retailer lost 95% of its value in just five years. The brand has plans to close 113 stores in the US and all 41 stores in Canada. According to Reuters,...

NEW YORK (AP) — Consumer backlash is growing against Target's stance on what type of bathrooms its transgender customers and employees can use. Two weeks ago, the Minneapolis-based discounter issued a statement that said customers and employees can use the restroom or fitting room that "corresponds to their gender identity." The move made Target the first major retailer to take such a prominent position on the issue, and won praise from supporters of transgender rights. But Target's position has also sparked criticism on social media. One online petition started by a group called The American Family Association, a conservative Christian...

Outdoor apparel giant Sports Authority has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and the retail chain could close all or most of its 450 stores nationwide as it struggles to pay off a reported $1 billion debt. Sports Authority is “pursuing a sale of some or all of the business,” a company statement said. “We have received initial expressions of interest from a number of potential buyers, and we are optimistic about the results of the sale process.” Founded in 1928, the athletic apparel retailer was once the largest sporting goods chain in America. In the years after its 2006...

Summary Target’s bathroom policy is scaring away many customers. Over 1 million people have signed a pledge not to shop at Target. This is likely to have a negative impact on sales and the stock price. I think Target's (NYSE:TGT) bathroom policy is a serious mistake from a business standpoint. The policy is scaring away customers, which is likely to lead to sales declines and a falling stock price. Target recently went public with its bathroom policy which states:

Why Sports Authority is throwing in the towel and closing all of its stores When struggling retailer Sports Authority filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last month in the face of more than $1 billion in debt, the company indicated that it had two options going forward. One of those was to shed underperforming stores and emerge from bankruptcy as an intact, but pared-down company. The other was to sell everything and cease operating. On Tuesday, the company appeared to choose the latter. . . . “With the minimum wage going up to $15 an hour and more people turning to...
