Question: Who was Gretchen Carlson's guest on FOX and Friends this morning 11/23/09? Gretchen had an author on the show this morning discussing his new book about marriage and relationships. I don't recall the book title or the author name, but the book sounded like it was funny. I think the book had something in the title like; how to get a good husband?

No, I'm not referring to marriages between blacks and whites, or Christians and Jews. I'm talking about marriages where one person is liberal and the other is conservative. To be more specific, I'm writing about my own marriage and I invite my esteemed AT readers to offer their advice. My husband and I were liberal Democrats for most of our lives. On occasion we used to talk about couples who were not politically aligned and wondered how they dealt with that in their relationship. Did they argue? Did they just not talk politics? Were they able to have interesting discussions...

Low-quality females prefer low-quality males, at least in the avian world. This is according to research published in the Royal Society journal Proceedings B, testing female zebra finches' taste in males. As adults, the low-quality females showed a preference for the songs of males of the same quality, and for the male birds themselves. Evolutionary biologists previously thought that females would always opt for the best male available. The study was led by Marie-Jeanne Holveck from the Centre of Functional and Evolutionary Ecology in Montpellier, France. She explained that low- and high-quality birds differ in almost every important characteristic, including...

Click to watch video poem. When her razorblade scrapes rough, she grabs another standing by. Why does she waste her youth on such a weak pathetic guy? When her chewing gum goes bland, she doesn't wait to spit it out. So why does she stick around when this loser starts to shout? When her inkpen starts to leak, she will not let it stain her hands. Why does she tell herself she can't find a better man? Her old friends tried to help, but, no, he cut them off instead. He isolates his captive, pushing buttons in her head.

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan, April 7, 2009 – Soldiers from Task Force Catamount recently met with village elders to address concerns, build relationships and inform residents about ongoing operations in central Afghanistan’s Wardak province. The province’s Nerkh district comprises several remote areas that are known safe havens for Taliban. During a recent mission, soldiers from Blackhawk Company, 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, noted the importance of building relationships with villagers in remote areas. “In the past, Taliban have found sanctuary in remote areas of Wardak province,” Army Capt. James McCune, Blackhawk Company commander, said. “The summer fighting season is approaching...

Washington, DC -- Some women decide to have abortions because they think having a baby will contribute to problems in their relationship with their husband or boyfriend. However, a new national study finds abortion causes more future relationship problems than carrying the pregnancy to term and parenting. Dr. Priscilla Coleman, a professor of Human Development and Family Studies at Bowling Green State University headed up the study. "For both men and women the experience of an abortion in a previous relationship was related to negative outcomes in the current relationship," they write.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 13, 2009 – As Iraq becomes increasingly self-sufficient, U.S. forces remain on hand to offer training and guidance aimed at building relationships and a better future for the nation. These relationships often are fostered at meetings and conferences, where Iraqi and U.S. forces exchange ideas, establish partnerships and bring issues, such as women’s rights, to light. A recent meeting in Kirkuk province laid the groundwork for a military partnership. Army Col. Ryan Gonsalves, commander of the 1st Cavalry Division’s 2nd Brigade Combat Team, met with two Iraqi generals from the 12th Iraqi Army Division earlier this month to...

WALID — Shaykh Sa’ad, Walid tribe leader in Anbar province, sponsored a Coalition forces medical assistance visit for the citizens here and the nearby Palestinian camp, Jan. 16. “The 179 patients we saw during this visit ranged from newborn to geriatrics,” said a Coalition forces member. “It’s rewarding to do visits like these; they help provide a valuable service to the community as well as solidify the positive relationships we’ve established in this region.” Visits like these provide access to basic health care. With no functioning medical facility in the village, the Coalition forces converted several rooms of an available...

n Part I, I made the argument that any woman who is married to a good man and who wants a happy marriage ought to consent to at least some form of sexual relations as much as possible. (Men need to understand that intercourse should not necessarily be the goal of every sexual encounter.) In Part II, I advance the argument that a wife should do so even when she is not in the mood for sexual relations. I am talking about mood, not about times of emotional distress or illness. Why? Here are eight reasons for a woman not...

Given our preoccupation with politics and economics, it is easy to forget that for most of us micro issues still play a greater role in our lives. So here are some thoughts that, as heretical as they might sound, have been found extremely helpful, sometimes even marriage-saving, from listeners to my radio show, which features a male-female hour every week. The subject is one of the most common problems that besets marriages: the wife who is not in the mood and the consequently frustrated and hurt husband. There are marriages with the opposite problem -- a wife who is frustrated...

Los Angeles, CA – A new study in the journal Personal Relationships reveals that women prefer mates who are recognized by their peers for their skills, abilities, and achievements, while not preferring men who use coercive tactics to subordinate their rivals. Indeed, women found dominance strategies of the latter type to be attractive primarily when men used them in the context of male-male athletic competitions. Jeffrey K. Snyder, Lee A. Kirkpatrick, and H. Clark Barrett conducted three studies with college women at two U.S. universities. Participants evaluated hypothetical potential mates described in written vignettes. The studies were designed to examine...

The ProtectMarriage.com—Yes on 8 campaign today criticized the "No on 8" campaign’s new television ad, released yesterday, which features California Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell. The ad raises a new standard for using a small, cleverly worded kernel of truth to foster the Big Lie. Specifically, the discussed whether schools are "required" to teach anything about marriage, and states that they are not. By this logic, presumably, they would argue that no one in California is required to have a drivers’ license, only the people who want to drive cars are. The real fact, as stated clearly in the...

Barack Obama and his supporters have tried to claim that his associations with people like Jeremiah Wright, Louis Farrakhan, James Meeks, John Lewis, Alcee Hastings, Bill Ayers, Mahdi Bray, and Nihad Awad, and his connections with organizations like Trinity United Church of Christ, ACORN, the Muslim American Society's (MAS) Freedom Foundation, and the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), were all innocuous. When people question Obama's character vis-ŕ-vis these relationships, his campaign and followers retort that he is being unfairly accused using guilt by association. In fact, Obama has had long-standing relationships, and/or relationships of convenience, with such people/entities, and...

Nice Guys Don’t Have to Finish Last Posted By Brett On September 28, 2008 @ 8:26 pm Oftentimes, when a man sees yet another bombshell on the arm of a dude who from all appearances is a complete d-bag, he is compelled to shake his fist at the sky and wonder if there is any justice in the world. “What does she see in him?” he asks in exasperation. The poser of this question is often a self-proclaimed “nice guy” who doesn’t understand why men of his breed so often seem to finish last while the moronic tools of the...

BAGHDAD — Time had little effect on the strands of razor-sharp concertina wire that spanned hundreds of meters and split Ali’s farmland except to dull its original purpose - security. Located on the outer wall of Camp Slayer on the Victory Base Complex in Baghdad, the fence was originally constructed sometime during the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom more than five years ago. But until early June, it served no purpose but to divide. In the small community of Radwaniyah, west of Baghdad International airport, an Iraqi farmer simply wanted to be able to access his fields without the seemingly...

SPILLING a vodka cranberry down your date’s white shirt is never a good start. And banging on about Brad Pitt won’t help your prospects either. So we asked relationship expert Jenni Trent Hughes to share her top ten dating tips: 1) Give yourself a quick emotional MOT before you go on a date to check you’re in the mindset for a possible new relationship. In other words,...

...So why, despite this avalanche of chatter, do we still seem hungry for even more chatter? More important, why didn't Spitzer's replacement, David A. Paterson, manage to defang the whole subject by announcing on his second day in office that he and his wife had had extramarital affairs in the past? ...At its core, it reveals how much uncertainty exists within even the strongest and most enduring relationships...humans desperately want to think...

By Arthur C. Brooks Many couples disagree about politics. In fact, researchers at the University of California have found that 56 percent of couples discuss politics fairly regularly, and 53 percent disagree “occasionally or frequently.” For some, this disagreement is a major barrier to marital harmony. I know one couple that battles bitterly and continuously over politics. It will be unsurprising this Valentine’s Day if one of them doesn’t end up sleeping on the couch due to a dispute over something along the lines of whether Barack Obama is secretly a socialist. Conjugal disagreement over the presidential election is just...

I know that flirting can be a huge source of contempt in relationships. Some guys see their partners flirting with other men and go ballistic. Some women see guys flirting with other women and think he's trying to score. And while I know that flirting can be a dangerous game if you're playing with the wrong people, I also believe that flirting can be healthy - as long as you're taking the energy you're building and putting it back into your relationship. So, what can innocent flirting with a co-worker, stranger, or random bartender do to help your relationship? More...

When many of us hear the words "domestic violence," we automatically assume the victim would be a female and the attacker would be a male. After all, men are traditionally viewed as the more aggressive of the two sexes, and the victims of most domestic abuse situations are indeed women. But a surprising number of domestic violence episodes do involve women as the aggressors, creating a new category of victim known as the battered husband. A battered husband suffers the same emotional, verbal and physical abuse as a battered wife, but is less likely to report these crimes to authorities....

Question: I've been dating the same guy exclusively since high school. I'm now 26, and we've been talking about marriage. I'm crazy about him, but I worry that I will regret limiting my dating experience to just one man. Should I explore other options? Her Take: If you've been with your boyfriend that long and are still "crazy about him," that's pretty promising. But you're smart to ask these questions. I think you could have regrets -- dating around often shows you just how many wrong men are out there, which makes the right one feel that much righter.

In a culture where young women take pride in having guilt-free sex with partners they barely know, Nolan and Aparicio are rarities. They have genuine boyfriends, not hook ups. "I don't know anyone else who's in a relationship, do you?" Nolan asks Aparicio. Nope, no one else. Hooking up has come to define sexual relationships for most of today's teens and young women. A national survey of 18-to-29-year-olds by the Pew Research Center reported that almost 60 percent were not in committed relationships and the majority of those were not interested in being committed. Absent old-fashioned dating, the alternative for these young women is hooking up, which can happen in any semi-private place and includes anything from kissing to intercourse. The beauty of hooking up is that it carries no commitment, and this is huge, for being emotionally dependent on a lover...
