Christian Side Hug is YouTube hit as celibate rappers warn of 'sinful' hugging A celibacy-advocating rap group has been advocating “Christian side-hugs” in a hit YouTube song, because frontal hugs are “sinful”, reports Tom Chivers. Gimme Dat Christian Side Hug, by a band of rappers apparently linked to a Californian ministry called The Father’s House, advocates standing side-by-side when hugging, to avoid the uncontrollable temptation that hugging face-to-face – and therefore crotch-to-crotch – would lead to. “This ain’t no front hug zone,” proclaims one of the rappers, who goes on to warn listeners that front hugs should only be permitted...

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, never shy with a photo opportunity, took his man-of-the-people act to the hip-hop dancefloor, where he used a rap music competition to deliver an anti-drugs message. "Graffiti is becoming a true art, fine and delicate," Mr Putin, clad in a beige turtleneck and grey sports jacket, told a young crowd at the "Respect" rap contest. "And breakdance is something peculiar," he said. "This really is propaganda for a healthy lifestyle because it is hard to imagine breakdancing having anything to do with drinking and dope," Mr Putin said. The powerful Russian president-turned-Prime Minister praised the...

"With the last 2 hip-hop concerts we've had an officer shot and killed and a downtown employee that was knifed and put in the hospital," said Warren Wright, Ft. Myers City Council Ward 1.The Ft. Myers police department has no statistics showing a link between increased violence and hip hop concerts, which leaves some to believe a ban on hip hop could be a violation of rights. "It does have the undertone of racism," said Willie Green of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. For now a ban on hip hop concerts is just a discussion set to be addressed at...

PEORIA — .More than 24 hours after a melee broke out at an apartment complex for Illinois Central College students early Sunday, police were still sorting out the details. Preliminary information from East Peoria police indicates a party Saturday night at WoodView Commons, an apartment complex at 100 WoodView Lane, grew out of control. “As best we can gather, the initial scenario is that there were some discourse between two gangs that became heightened by the playing of a certain rap song that insulted one of the gangs, and the fight was on,” Police Chief Ed Papis said Monday. “Whoever...

FARMVILLE, Va. — Richard Alden Samuel McCroskey III rapped about the thrill of murder in songs he posted on the Internet. Police believe the fantasy lyrics became a gruesome reality in a small Virginia college town. McCroskey, 20, was being held Sunday in the killings of four people who were found at a Longwood University professor's home near campus in Farmville, which is about 50 miles west of Richmond. McCroskey, of Castro Valley, Calif., faces charges of first-degree murder, robbery and grand larceny of an automobile, said Farmville police Capt. Wade Stimpson. The aspiring rapper in the underground horrorcore genre,...

HAZLETON – Jan Lewan is reinventing himself as a polka rapper. Fresh out of prison and set to begin repaying his debt to the people he swindled, the area polka legend said he was exposed to rap music while behind bars and took a liking to the art. He admits it took a little while for him to get used to the genre, but he finally started liking it when he realized he could tell a story, along with the uplifting melody. “My rap will be a melody of polka. It is something different and something I hope polka people...

Orchid Nightclub is crying racism but ready to comply with a selectman’s apparent demand that they stop playing hip-hop music. The flareup comes in the wake of a triple shooting early yesterday in the Saugus nightclub’s parking lot. “It’s absolutely a racial statement. It makes me think the same thing you’re thinking,” said the club’s consultant, Anthony Cagliano, a former Saugus selectman. “I know the town has made it clear they’re not a fan of hip-hop music and the audience that hip-hop brings,” he said. “So we will get away from the hip-hop scene, which is unfair to the clientele.”...

The White House has dispatched the lovable Sesame Street resident Elmo to spread the word on ways to ward off the H1N1 flu, but for those who find the red, fluffy Muppet a little too soft, there's Dr. John D. After picking the finalists from more than 200 entries, the...

For his first guest on last Friday's special edition of "Real Time" host Bill Maher spent a half hour interviewing rapper, mogul, and entrepreneur Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter. (For my previous commentary on Maher's second interview of the evening, with progressive journalist Bill Moyers click here.) Carter was soft-spoken in his reflective interview which rarely got particularly political. Maher mainly questioned Carter about his artistic process and style. He did also ask about being a married man and his responsibility as a role model: My responsibility is to the culture. My job is to show it in a great light. I'm...

With unsettling regularity, in public places where music is being played for all to hear such as from a juke-box, I, a black man, find myself being inundated with the N-word by some young black rapper. Imagine being in an establishment with peers of various races, creeds, and colors when out of the blue, some rapper on a record is saying "my N-word", "you N-word", or "expletive N-word". When this happens I feel insulted by the rapper. I feel like he is undermining the efforts of all of those people who fight for equality. I would not stand for it...

So you think you’re all cool and hip, huh? Well, you are not as cool as famous rappers Jay-Z or Drake — and you are certainly not as cool as Jay-Z and Drake together. This is the central thesis of “Off That,” the newly leaked Drake collab from Jay’s upcoming The Blueprint 3, and it’s hard to argue with. Just accept it: Whatever cutting-edge trends you think you’re inventing, Jigga and Drizzy already discarded as played-out years ago. Facts are facts. The fizzy beat behind “Off That” comes from Timbaland; while he and Jay-Z have done more ground-breaking work in...

Inarguably, hip hop (rap) is one of the leading pop music genres; at least, it is one of the loudest. I did not know which hip hop singer to choose (I do not know any), so I queried Billboard magazine and found, at the time of this writing, a man named “Drake” to hold the top spot in that category, indicating his popularity, at least currently. I searched for “Drake lyrics” and was directed to this site (it was first in the listings), where I navigated to the album that came up first on a YouTube search. Feel free to...

July 18, 2009 Aim higher than rap or basketball, Obama urges young blacks The 45-minute address was Mr Obama?s first big speech on race since he was forced to tackle the issue head on during his presidential campaign last year James Bone. In his first big speech on race since winning the White House, President Obama has exhorted young blacks to aspire to be more than basketballers and rap music stars. In a historic address, America’s first black president told the country’s oldest civil rights group, celebrating its 100th anniversary, that it was time for “a new mindset” that did...

Unparalleled in the history of American political corruption is the backwards collection of scoundrels, scallywags, hooligans, rascals and charlatans collectively known as the Louisiana State Legislature. So seeing a rapper blasting profane lyrics in their chamber is—Very funny! How exactly this happened is still sort of unclear, but the gist of it is that the state decided to honor "Hurricane Chris," a Shreveport, Louisiana native, for all of his recent success by giving him the floor of the state House of Representatives for a few minutes, rather than say, naming a meaningless street after him or giving him the key...

Young Conservatives is a group with a devout mission to spread the love and logic surrounding true conservatism (video). Our greatest enemy lies in the lack of understanding of the conservative movement. In a technological era driven fiercely by the main stream media, those who taut the true conservative message of individual responsibility, moral absolutes, and small government are slanted as intolerant, racist, “bible and gun clinging”, corporate fat cats who could not care less about the environment nor the well being of their fellow man. Being Christian or conservative or a combination of the two is not viewed as...

Authorities allege that Berry, who had an altercation with Burton at...

A 17-year-old girl had to be airlifted to a local hospital Tuesday evening after she was run over by her own car while trying to "ghost ride," a car stunt popularized in the East Bay, police said. "Ghost riding" typically entails a car owner walking or dancing alongside or on top of a vehicle that is idling forward without a driver. The stunt has local origins, particularly in the Bay Area rap scene radiating from Oakland and Vallejo. The injured girl was "performing a horseplay maneuver" as her 1980s-model Chevrolet Blazer idled along about 6 p.m. near San Jose Avenue...

Ahmed, who killed himself in a suicide bombing attack in Somalia in October, is just one of up to 40 men from the Twin Cities area who have disappeared and are feared to have returned to their homeland for training with the al-Shabaab terrorist group to wage jihad. The FBI is investigating similar disappearances in other major Somali communities in...

LONDON (CNN) -- The latest video from Somalia's al Qaeda-backed Al-Shabaab wing is as slickly produced as a reality TV show but with a startling message -- complete with a hip-hop jihad vibe. Experts think Abu Mansoor al-Amriki, dubbed "The American" by al Qaeda, speaks in the Somali video. "Mortar by mortar, shell by shell, only going to stop when I send them to hell," the unidentified voice raps on the video, which runs at least 18 minutes. The video also shows a man reported to be Abu Mansoor al-Amriki, dubbed "The American" by al Qaeda. He apparently is now...

Is America a Christian nation? Right-wing rapper Hi-Caliber says we still are, and he's ticked off about Obama's comments to the contrary. I never thought I'd like rap. A hip hop artist's visit to a Dallas middle school has sparked controversy. It's not what he said, or what he did, but what students went home with that's drawing concern. National hip hop artist Gorilla Zoe visited Pearl C. Anderson Junior High School on Friday. He was there for a motivational speech but left students with a poster that has some questionable content and left parents wondering why the school allowed it. This poster contained the cover shot for Gorilla Zoe's new album, showing the rapper smoking, drinking and packing a pistol in his pocket. Pearl C. Anderson is...

[video] Here’s a deep philosophical question for you to consider: Is it possible to be a rap artist without being a complete idiot? Kanye West, the simple-minded rapper who’s most famous for saying “George Bush doesn’t care about black people,” has offered up a few more brilliant observations. While taping a program for VH1, West recently expressed opinions on a wide range of people he apparently likes better than Bush. “Can’t we give Chris a break,” he said about girlfriend-beating singer Chris Brown, “…I know I make mistakes in life.” “Michael Jackson, amazing. Michael Phelps, amazing… [...more]

He was also wanted by Miami-Dade School Board police for aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm on school property. Darwinism as Religion in a Holy War Feb 19, 2009 — It might be expected that media attention on Darwin would be exceptionally high this month because of his bicentennial, but some of it seems downright religious. The adulation he has been receiving is almost embarrassing sometimes. It is only exceeded by the righteous indignation frequently expressed against intelligent design. In any other context, the fighting words of the Darwinians would be described as hate speech. Here are some recent examples: 1. Shrine to Darwin:...

Great to see that we've ushered in a new day in American changieness. Following Rev. Lowrey's inaugural "white will embrace what is right" (or, for my Japanese wife, "yellow doesn't have to be mellow"), we were treated to an excellent demonstration of post-racial politics. OK, it's not "We are the World," but role model Jay-Z manages to capture what all of us are thinking, but just couldn't put to a beat...."you can keep ya Puss, I don't want no more BUSH!" and "No more white lies!" Hey, I was just saying that to my kids the other day!! Thanks Jay-Z!...

The film opened across the country on Friday. Three of the men were described as in stable condition in Brookdale Hospital. The fourth was in critical condition after being stabbed several times.

Professor Ferenc Szasz argued that so-called rap battles, where two or more performers trade elaborate insults, derive from the ancient Caledonian art of "flyting". According to the theory, Scottish slave owners took the tradition with them to the United States, where it was adopted and developed by slaves, emerging many years later as rap. Professor Szasz is convinced there is a clear link between this tradition for settling scores in Scotland and rap battles, which were famously portrayed in Eminem's 2002 movie 8 Mile. He said: "The Scots have a lengthy tradition of flyting - intense verbal jousting, often laced...

Radio station Galaxy FM has suspended two broadcasters for playing a controversial new song which some claim is offensive. There’s nothing surreptitious about the message of Boston rap trio East Coast Avengers’ new single. In “Kill Bill O’Reilly,” the lyrics call for the Fox News star to “be hanged like Benito Mussolini and otherwise killed.” The song is causing outrage - and not just among admirers of right-wing personality O’Reilly. The lyrics are so extreme that even O’Reilly’s fiercest media enemy, TV pundit Keith Olbermann, has condemned the East Coast Avengers.
