The number of men paying women for sex has nearly doubled in a decade, says research. Why? One in 10 of the 11,000 men asked in a survey in 2000 said he used prostitutes, compared with one in 20 in 1990. The figure is published for the first time in the latest edition of the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections. But why such a sharp rise in just a decade? Dr Helen Ward, lead author of the report, points to growing divorce rates, sex tourism like stag holidays and the increasing availability of commercial sex through such means as the internet....

Some prostitutes are failing to take advantage of new rights German prostitutes are campaigning to ensure any future government does not withdraw their workers' rights, as some MPs have proposed, the BBC's Ray Furlong in Berlin reports. It was an unconventional rendition of the German national anthem, going intermittently out of tune as the singers' voices didn't quite make the high notes. But this was no ordinary choir or concert. A group of about a dozen women had gathered in front of the Reichstag to deliver a lyrical warning against repealing the prostitution law which Germany approved in 2002. The...

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A push to outlaw prostitution conducted indoors has stalled over concerns the bill targets the wrong people. Sen. Rhoda Perry, sponsor of a bill that extends the ban on prostitution to activities taking place inside buildings, backed away from the proposed legislation after lobbying from the Rhode Island affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union. The group argues arresting prostitutes in massage parlors and brothels is unproductive because they will quickly be replaced and are sometimes victims of human trafficking. The ACLU argues police should target the customers and people running the brothels.

Nicholas Kristof’s recent New York Times columns on sex trafficking in Cambodia drew a lot of reader mail. Many asked, “What about the johns?”—the men who buy the services. “Why aren’t the men written about?” one reader asked Kristof, “Embarrass them, expose them, not the women.” Kristof responded, “[F]oreign countries just are not going to arrest a lot of the johns, while they could be persuaded to arrest traffickers of young girls.” Okay, of course, we want traffickers arrested. That was the goal of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act that Bill Bennett, Michael Horowitz, and I along with many others...

A Berkeley initiative fails at the polls, but succeeds in drawing attention to the sex work debate. ___ Scarlot Harlot, a self-proclaimed “unrepentant whore, activist and artist,” sauntered into the Missouri Lounge on November 2 looking more like a patriotic Scarlet O’Hara on a tempestuous Saturday night. Joining sex workers and friends to await election returns inside the saloon-esqe Berkeley venue, Harlot sported an American-flag-turned-18th-century-period gown that swayed playfully over white knee-high boots. Otherwise known as Carol Leigh, Harlot was energized by the buzz of election night, occasionally turning her attention from the blare of Led Zeppelin’s “Houses of the...

Last Sunday, I picked up a copy of Boston Magazine while sitting in the green room at the Fox News studios in Watertown, Mass. Leafing through the publication, I came across an article titled "Confessions of an Ivy League Callgirl," written by Jeannette Angell, a university lecturer with a master's degree from Yale. The fact that she was a Yalie caught my eye -- as a Harvard Law student, I've already adopted our communal animosities -- and so I read the piece. Apparently, Angell began trading sex for cash after receiving her doctorate in social anthropology. But what was shocking...
