I like feeling wanted, but over the past several months I've noticed I'm getting pinged for things that I don't know (and unfortunately don't really care) about. The only ping list I remember signing up for is PJ's DUmmie FUnnies. Most of the other stuff is interesting, and it's nice to be invited into conversations, I'm just wondering if this is a common occurance with FReepers...or am I just odd? And really most of this stuff didn't start until I started with DUmmie FUnnies... or maybe that's the only time I really started noticing it. Any answers? Thanks

I have been playing a little bit of on-line games lately (Allied Assault), and the moderators of various servers keep booting other players for having too high of a "ping." What does this mean? Thanks for any help, fellow Freepers.

I'm a Roadrunner user. All of a sudden I cannot reach certain domains. For example, I cannot access google(!) I can ping it at 216.239.57.99 or at www.google.com. Tracert shows time-outs at hop 13. I cannot ping lerc.nasa.gov (128.156.10.12) (timeouts)--but IE can get there with no problems (unlike last night). Tracert to www.jetico.com [62.142.11.131] works, but the site cannot be accessed from my browser. Tracert to to www.grc.com [204.1.226.226] fails with time-outs. Tracert to www.iwon.com [208.45.133.25] fails with a very interesting message: 15 * iwon-gw.customer.alter.net [157.130.91.82] reports: Destination net unreachable. A month or so ago I posted a Vanity, addressing the topic of "Ping Lists." It turned into a rather large thread, and the random pinging seemed to disappear. I hate to waste bandwidth by posting on this topic again, but .....again I am bombarded by pings that I DID NOT REQUEST. This morning there were TWO people pinging me to the same thread, posted twice. This particular thread was ENORMOUS and VERY graphics-intensive. It took eight full minutes to load. You see, NOT EVERYONE CAN GET HIGH SPEED SERVICE, and with old dialup phone lines that can't handle anymore...

Why is it whenever one posts a reply on a thread for a particular topic, other Freepers feel the need to "ping" you for everything under the sun? It seems as if anytime I post a reply on a thread, 15 people add me to their "ping" list. Ok, maybe 15 is an exaggeration, the exact count was probably 10. These "ping" lists can and usually are for something unrelated to anything that would remotely interest me. Not always, but most of the time. And it's darn annoying since 9 times out of 10 I don't know the person pinging...
