July 30 -- Mark Halperin and John Heilemann discuss former Texas governor Rick Perry’s latest stumble on “With All Due Respect.”

We are now 467 days from the next presidential election on November 8, 2016, to elect the 45th president of the United States. In just 7 days, on August 6th, Fox News will be holding the first debate for Republican presidential candidates – in Cleveland, Ohio. Politico reported that there will actually be two Fox News debates on August 6th: a 5PM debate for all 16 announced candidates and a 9PM “main event” for “the 10 candidates with the highest average in national polls.” In preparation for the upcoming debates, we asked some Oregon Republican political insiders to give us...

Who would’ve thought an obscure hip-hop artist would go down in history as the most overrated political moment of all time? Sister Souljah — a name now always followed by “moment” — made headlines back in 1992 when she said of the Los Angeles riots: “If black people kill black people every day, why not have a week and kill white people?” This inflammatory comment incensed a majority of the American public. Then-presidential candidate Bill Clinton cemented Souljah’s name in political history when he denounced her comment at a convention for Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow Coalition — an event at which...

In a thoughtful review of Ann Coulter's splendid new book, iconoclastic Democrat Mickey Kaus lists the open-borders advocates in American politics: ...the entire Democratic party, half the Republican party, half (secretly) of the politicians who claim to represent the other half of the Republican party, virtually the entire press (including Fox), virtually all of business, and virtually all big money political donors (including the Kochs!). The bit I've bolded helps explain the Trump bump in the GOP polls. A significant part of the Republican base thinks half their candidates are just schmoozing them to get through primary season, genuflecting toward...

Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry challenged Donald Trump to a pullup contest today in response to the billionaire’s charge that Perry wasn’t smart enough to join the presidential debate —- or as a reporter put it to Perry, not tough enough. "Let's get a pullup bar out there and see who can do the most pullups,” Perry told a reporter, who told him that Trump “questioned your energy, toughness and quote-unquote, ‘brain power’ that it might require to run a successful campaign.”

UPDATE: I have removed Governor Jindal’s twitter handle from the title. His staff reached out to me to say he is not engaging in politics right now. In the wake of the Lafayette shooting, he has gone off the campaign trail to focus on the situation in Louisiana. Today he is attending the funerals of the victims. —— It is stuff like this that has Donald Trump in first place, kicking everybody else’s back side. And it is stuff like this that is going to see Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) 100% start rising in the polls. I realize Sen. Ted...

They said it couldn’t be done. First, they said Donald Trump would never actually run for president, and then he officially announced his run for president. They said his comments about Mexican rapists would sink him before he got started, and Trump promptly rocketed to the top of the polls. Then, they said his attack on Sen. John McCain‘s (R-AZ) war heroism would definitely derail the Trump train, and yet he remains at the top of all the national polls, is a close second in Iowa, and has a huge lead in New Hampshire. Republican strategists are consoling themselves by...

Donald Trump does the same thing whenever he trolls the other GOP candidates. He talks about his money and influence, and how his competitors once tried to dip their hands in the “Trump Honeypot.” Or as Trump himself said at his candidacy announcement in June, “I’m really rich!” He did it to Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) on Tuesday when, in response to Graham’s “jackass” comment on Monday, he gave out the senator’s personal phone number. Meanwhile, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry‘s campaign team began tweeting screenshots of old tweets in which Trump threw his hat in the ring for...

Breitbart Texas has learned that 2016 Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump is heading to the Texas-Mexico border to get a firsthand look at the current border security situation. Trump is expected to meet with Border Patrol agents of the Laredo Sector.

The Donald Trump bubble, clearly not ready to pop, reminds me that I still haven’t seen how his rise to the top of the polls reveals the trite and biennial “fight for the soul of the Republican Party.” Surely the GOP isn’t the only party with a soul, but in conventional wisdom, it seems to be the only party that always fights over it. (And apologies if I’ve missed this cycle’s fight-for-the-soul navel gazer; I can’t get to everything.) Factually speaking, Trump is indeed the new and undisputed GOP front-runner. If he can hold on for a year, give or...

Donald Trump’s self-destruction will soon manifest itself in a drop in the polls. The problem remains for those GOP voters still seeking a candidate who is a viable alternative to Jeb Bush. It is not likely to be Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who has been outshone by more credible candidates and again showed bad judgment in trying to ingratiate himself with Trump. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., seems practically irrelevant to the race, and his preference to let the Obama administration negotiate with Iran rather than press for sanctions may be the death knell of his effort.. Who then stands to...

Sen. Ted Cruz insists he won’t wage “violence” on Republicans–which is part of the reason why he won’t condemn Donald Trump’s comments about immigrants and prisoners of war. The Wall Street Journal isn’t holding back, though. The paper’s conservative editorial board slammed Cruz and praised former Gov. Rick Perry for their starkly different responses to Trump’s claim that Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., “is only a war hero because he got captured. I like people who weren’t captured better.” Perry, an Air Force veteran, had one of the quickest and most forceful condemnations of Trump, insisting the real estate mogul wasn’t...

John McCain is a war hero. Period. Unless, of course, he’s a threat to Democrats and Barack Obama — as he was in September of 2008 as the Republican nominee for president. Then the man whose honor is suddenly being defended by outraged Establishment figures from both parties and the media was no longer a war hero. No, back there in the fall of 2008 McCain was being savaged as a mean SOB with an uncontrollable temper — a man who threatened to physically strike a wheelchair-bound, oxygen-dependent mother of a missing Vietnam serviceman. When he wasn’t busy causing another...

Being president of the United States is serious business, not a reality TV show. This is especially true for the next president, who will have a big job ahead after the failures of the Obama administration. Our challenges are too complex — and the future of our country too important — to let egos, inflated rhetoric, and emotion take the place of thoughtful discussion. I made the case recently for why GOP policies are the best to create opportunity across the country for families of all backgrounds. I’ve held up my home state’s reforms in economic, education, and sentencing policies...

As the candidates who will qualify for the presidential debate in August begin their preparations, they are going to want to bone up on a range of policy issues and make sure they have coherent answers to hard questions. (Now that Syria is a mess what do we do about it? If a Supreme Court vacancy opens on Day One, who is at the top of your replacement list? Has the president pardoned too few or too many people?) Equally important will be a game plan for neutralizing Donald Trump. Even before Trump self-destructed on Saturday, we saw candidates like...

At the Family Leadership Summit, Gov. Rick Perry blasts Donald Trump over his comments about John McCain and says that Trump should apologize or be disqualified to be President! I'd like to know where y'all stand on this?

Lots of Donald Trump‘s Republican presidential candidates have already shredded him for his comments about John McCain, but Rick Perry came out swinging by calling for Trump to basically GTFO. In case you missed it, the draft-defering Trump attacked McCain today over his war hero status because, “He’s a war hero ’cause he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured.”Now, for some unbelievable reason, lots of conservatives including the aforementioned candidates thought Trump crossed a line.Perry was the first to release a statement on The Donald’s latest rambling, this one really going for the jugular (emphasis his): Donald Trump...

Brendan Bordelon has a piece up on the home page on Scott Walker taking a pass on commenting on Trump on grounds that he doesn’t want to discuss other candidates, which strikes me as entirely reasonable. The conventional wisdom demands that Republicans devote themselves to denouncing Trump, but candidates are foolish to do this unless it serves some other purpose. Jeb has criticized him repeatedly, even after he said he was done with it. I don’t know why he really needs to get drawn into a war of words with Trump, but at least this accords with Jeb’s orientation toward...

Rick Perry made a tragic mistake by coming out swinging at the billionaire businessman.(VIDEO-AT-LINK)One of the moderators in one of my favorite conservative communities on Google+ (yes, it still exists) recently published a post in which she praised Rick Perry’s response to Donald Trump’s statements on immigration and border security, while criticizing Ted Cruz for his. She’s not the only one who believes that Republicans have to distance themselves from the successful businessman, fearing they’ll alienate Hispanic voters if they don’t. Moderator Leslie P. quotes from this article by Jon Gabriel: Perry is setting himself up as the grown-up in...

Two candidates in the GOP presidential race are reacting to Donald Trump in vastly different ways, reflecting on their character. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) not only refused to criticize Trump’s racist language about illegal immigrants but praised him, once again demonstrating there is no limit to how low the Texas junior senator will stoop to curry favor with the far right. Then yesterday, Cruz invited himself over to unctuously ingratiate himself with Trump. Thankfully, he did not bow as President Obama has done with foreign potentates. But the entire act showed how weak and desperate Cruz is. He is not...
