  • Squirrel at Mich. cemetery wraps nest in Old Glory

PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) — A brazen squirrel has been grabbing small American flags placed in a cemetery and carrying them up to its nest, which now looks as if it's bedecked in bunting. Every Memorial Day, volunteers place the flags next to the graves of about 965 veterans buried at Mount Hope Cemetery on the city's north side. The flags were undisturbed during a Mass held Monday. The next day, the Times Herald reported, workers at the cemetery about 55 miles northeast of Detroit noticed several wooden staffs were still in the ground, but the flags themselves had been...

What's offensive about the American flag? Some people don't like it but I'm not like that. It reminds me of the tens of thousands of people who have died so I can be free. If you live in the U.S. and display an American flag at your home or in your personal work space no one should tell you to take it down. Who would do that anyway? It would be shameful.According to FoxNews, Kindred Hospital - Mansfield, TX would. A woman with her daughter deployed in Iraq was told to remove the American flag from her area because it...

ARLINGTON, Va. — Sixty-four years ago on Feb. 23, 1945, U.S. Marines stormed the sands of Iwo Jima and raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi. In honor of the 64th anniversary of that historic event, dozens of spectators and Marines, including nine individuals who fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima, gathered at the Marine Corps War Memorial today for a flag-raising ceremony. One of the Iwo Jima veterans present at the event acted as a forward observer during the battle, calling for and guiding indirect artillery fire from the island. “The [flag-raising] brings back so many memories,” said...

Oh, say - can you see? Look. It's President Obama, and he's surrounded by American flags. They're on the dais in star-spangled glory. They're at the town-hall meeting and the news conference, in bold folds of red, white and blue. The White House has rediscovered - or possibly reinvented - the patriotic cachet of Old Glory as a perfect frame for the new president. That's the same president who once would not wear an American flag pin. Things have changed.

In the home state of the Star-Spangled Banner, some lawmakers believe the flags flown here ought to be made in the land of the free and home of the brave, and not some other place -- like China. Harford County lawmakers have put in legislation requiring that any U.S. or Maryland flag displayed on state property must be made in the United States. A second, broader bill would make it a crime to sell an American or Maryland flag made outside the country.

Christopher Gadsden's face and name may not be immortalized on any bill or coin, but this firebrand designed a symbol which, even through the swirling mists of time, is a reminder of the birth of the nation and the spirit that carried it to freedom. June 14 is Flag Day. On that day, of course, we remember the Stars and Stripes and the men who fought under that banner for freedom. McCain supporters, claiming they rescued 12,000 miniature American flags from the site of Barack Obama’s nomination acceptance speech last Thursday, redistributed the orphan flags to audience members ahead of a McCain rally in Colorado Springs on Saturday. The move was an overt swipe at Obama from a campaign whose motto has been “country first.” But Democratic convention organizers claimed the flags were not going to be discarded — but instead were snatched from the site of Obama’s historic address to carry...
