NORMAN, Okla.—The family of a man who was questioned by police for a shooting Saturday afternoon says he shot another man in self-defense. Police were called to the 4000 block of Mayfair Dr. around 10 a.m. Saturday, regarding a fight. While officers were on their way to the scene, the fight intensified to a shooting. Authorities took the suspected shooter, 47-year-old Todd William Hoss into custody at that time. After investigating the shooting, police learned that Hoss may have fired the weapon in self-defense.

Police were at two locations in southeast Oklahoma City Friday night investigating reports of a burglary and a shooting. Police said five people were trying to burglarize a home at the 1500 block of SE 45 when the female homeowner shot one of them with her gun. A friend of the homeowner, a man, shot another burglar with the homeowner's gun, police report. The burglars fled the scene and went to a house at the 500 block of SE 79, police said. Both shooting victims were taken to a hospital and were in serious to critical condition, police said.

State Rep. Sean Roberts will be among 15 bill authors of a measure named the Oklahoma Firearms Freedom Act. House Bill 2021 would assert the Second Amendment rights of Oklahomans by exempting guns or ammunition made in the state from federal regulations. The bill specifies that to qualify for the exemption the guns must be clearly marked as “Made in Oklahoma” and kept within state boundaries. In 2010, the legislation was introduced as Senate Bill 1685, but was vetoed by then Gov. Brad Henry after passing in both the House and Senate.

Dear...: Thank you for contacting me about the Second Amendment. As your voice in Washington, I appreciate knowing your views. In 1994, the assault weapons ban established a comprehensive regulatory scheme of prohibiting the manufacture, transfer, or possession of assault weapons, as well as the possession or transfer of large capacity ammunition feeding devices that hold more than 10 rounds. These magazines are used by millions of Americans and are customary in handguns and other firearms. Nineteen specific weapons and their copycats were banned by the original legislation signed into law by President Clinton on September 13, 1994. The weapons...

We now know the name of the masked man dressed in camouflage that opened fire in a shopping mall near Portland, Oregon. Police say Jacob Tyler Roberts was armed with a stolen semi-automatic weapon when he stormed the mall on Tuesday. FOX23 did some checking and neither Woodland Hills Mall or the Promenade allows open carry holders to bring their guns inside. Tulsa police say it’s a good thing it would allow them to pinpoint who a shooter is if this were ever to happen here. However, local gun advocates say it puts them more in danger. Kirby Ellis is...

ON the first day Douglass High School students walked the halls of their new building, the Oklahoma City School Board chairman at the time stood before students with a message of hope.

“The investment they made in you is one we expect to pay off for years to come,” Cliff Hudson said that day in January 2006. He was referencing voter support of MAPS for Kids, which paid for the new Douglass and hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of capital improvements throughout the district.

A handful of local businesses have posted signs banning, or welcoming, firearms since the state's open carry law went into effect Nov. 1. But many, possibly apprehensive to offend customers, have decided to wait and see if open carry becomes an issue first. Business owners have the right to control the presence of guns on their premises and it appears many are treading carefully since the open carry law went into effect Nov. 1. Signs banning, or welcoming, legal firearms are not widespread. Business owners face a difficult decision: if they ban firearms, will they alienate pro-gun customers? But if...

NORMAN — Deisy Escalera considers Oklahoma her home. She graduated from high school here, goes to college here and pays taxes here. But in some respects, Escalera isn't American — at least, not on paper. “I consider myself an American,” she said. “I was not born here, but I consider myself an American.” Escalera, 23, came to the United States illegally from Mexico with her mother when she was 6 years old. Today, she's one of 25 undocumented students at the University of Oklahoma. Several of those undocumented students and their supporters gathered on OU's South Oval Tuesday evening to...

Dashcam video captures 14 illegal immigrants piling out of a car and running from police. What was supposed to be a routine traffic stop turned out to be anything but. Fox 25's Kisha Henry shows us why deputies think the unusual scene could become a lot more typical. Sgt. Cody Palmer is the Canadian County Sheriff's Deputy who made the stop. He says he's seen a lot of things being transported across the interstate-- narcotics, money loads, stolen property-- but nothing like this. "I'm driving eastbound on I-40," says Sgt. Palmer, describing the scene. He says he pulled over the...

At midnight of the first day of the eleventh month, a different day dawned in Oklahoma. A new law went into effect that will undoubtedly change a few things around here. The “Open Carry” statute allows gun holders (who are trained and licensed) to publicly carry their guns. Make no mistake it signals a return to a time when this kind of gun-toting dress was de rigueur. Advocates of this law cite that openly carrying (and swaggering) with the weight of one’s gun is the hip and trendy thing to do among states. One news source cites that 14 other...

If you’re a thief, there are a couple of warning signs that you should watch out for. A dog bowl and a leash in the front yard would tip you off that you’re probably going to get bitten. A sign that reads, “Trespassers will be shot!” is pretty self-explanatory. The home of 77-year-old Lloyd McCarty is similarly filled with warning signs. He flies an American flag on the front porch, he has a U.S. Marine Corps patch tacked to the wall, and he also keeps a framed picture of himself in his glory day as a Marine. If the home...

The Tulsa Police Department got a call from Oklahoma State University Medical Center last Friday night, warning them that two men had shown up with bullet wounds. This was kind of a backwards crime. Usually, police start with a crime and have to figure out where the criminals are. This time, they started with two wounded criminals and had to figure out what crime had been committed. Police investigated and puzzled out the source of this mysterious double shooting. According to their report, it all started when a woman invited a man back to her room at the Economy Inn,...

WASHINGTON, D.C. --(Ammoland.com)- On November 1 2012, a new law will go into effect granting hunters in the state of Oklahoma the right to use legally owned suppressors while hunting all game animals. With the help of ASA lobbyists, Senate Bill 1743 was signed into law by Governor Mary Fallin on May 25. The passage of the new law made Oklahoma the third state in 2012 to legalize suppressor use while hunting. Earlier in 2012, similar measures were also passed in Texas and Arizona. Contrary to popular belief, suppressors, also referred to as silencers, do not render gunshots inaudible. However,...

NORMAN — Don’t look for too many Norman residents openly carrying firearms today. There may be a few, but other states that have enacted open carry statutes say the novelty soon wears off. The statue goes into effect today, allowing an estimated 141,000 Oklahomans with a license to carry a concealed weapon to openly display them in a holster or belt. Norman police explained their procedures to a packed house Monday at city hall.

Tulsa, Okla. — Don't be surprised if, on November 1st, you see people carrying firearms in holsters in plain sight. November 1st is the day the state's Open Carry law takes effect. Tulsa Police have been getting some additional training on how to deal with people who are carrying their guns in the open. And Tulsa Police Officer Jill Roberson says it will take some adjustment on the part of the public as well. She said they expect to get lots of 911 calls from people who are concerned because they see someone with a gun, at least at first,...

Oct. 19-- Arby's franchisee U.S. Beef Corp. is one of hundreds of businesses in the state trying to figure out what to do when Oklahoma's open carry firearm law takes effect Nov. 1. Although U.S. Beef Corp. has the right to restrict weapons from entering its properties, the Tulsa-based company inadvertently became the target of a passionate Second Amendment controversy when it started posting "No Weapons" signs outside its Arby's restaurants two years ago. The situation led to protests, and now U.S. Beef Corp. and other businesses face another decision: Should customers be allowed to carry guns openly in their...

CALERA, OK - Yesterday we reported on a brave 12-year-old Bryan County girl who was home alone when she shot an intruder that broke into her house. She's been the talk of Texoma the past 24 hours, and today Steven Powell sat down with her to hear the story in her own words. "He opened the screen door and started pounded on the door. So I didn't answer it. And I called my mom. She said to go get the gun and hide in the closet." Kendra St. Clair says she stayed in the closet until she thought the coast...
