While other states have been moving right along with deploying the decades-old hydrofracking technique that’s unlocking access to their hitherto hard-to-reach oil and gas reserves (and enjoying the subsequent wealth- and job-creation that comes with it), the state of New York has been hanging back while Governor Andrew Cuomo decides whether he cares more about serving the best interests of his state or placating the vociferous green lobby. The governor has been dithering between continuing New York’s current ban on hydraulic fracturing or allowing fuel companies to go for it in at least the state’s southern portion, and has several...

Sixteen and pregnant? There’s an app for that. The Bloomberg administration has launched an app intended to reduce teen pregnancy called “Teens in NYC Protection+” that provides a wealth of health data for kids who are — or are thinking about becoming — sexually active, The Post has learned. Information about everything from free clinics for HIV and STD testing to receiving condoms and emergency contraception is just a touch away on a smartphone. The Health Department has yet to publicly announce the app. But the information has been available on the nyc.gov Web site, which has a special section...

Some 1 million workers across the city will soon able to call in sick without losing a day’s salary, under a deal struck yesterday to make small businesses provide paid days off for illness. The measure comes after City Council Speaker Christine Quinn dropped her long-standing opposition to a paid-sick-days bill. The new legislation — which Quinn is expected to tout at City Hall today — will give workers at small companies their salary for up to five sick days a year. Quinn has been facing growing criticism from other mayoral candidates for blocking paid sick leave — as well...

Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown today announced that current WBC welterweight champion Robert Guerrero has been arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport and charged with illegally traveling with an unloaded pistol and three unloaded high capacity bullet magazines. The weapon and 15-bullet clips were discovered during a routine pre-flight check-in this morning. District Attorney Brown said, “I hope that Mr. Guerrero fights better than he thinks. For anyone who hasn’t gotten the message, let me be crystal clear. You cannot bring an unlicensed weapon – loaded or unloaded – into this county or this city. And if you...

The National Rifle Association today filed a federal lawsuit against New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and other officials, seeking injunctive relief from the state’s Secure Ammunition and Firearms (SAFE) Act. This was the law for which Olympic Arms in Lacey announced in February that it would no longer do business with agencies in New York State. It’s the kind of law anti-gunners would like to see enacted in Washington and Oregon as “sensible” or “reasonable.” It limits magazine capacity to seven rounds, requires background checks for ammunition purchases, and requires that retailers report large ammunition sales...

A New York couple has been arrested and accused of plotting to babysit children as a cover to drug and sexually abuse them, federal prosecutors said. Special agents with the FBI and NYPD detectives arrested Bebars Baslan, 35, and Kristen Henry, 25, from Brooklyn, on Tuesday night at a hotel in Jersey City, N.J. Prosecutors say they believed they were going there to meet an acquaintance and three children, including a 1-year-old and a 3-month-old baby, that the group was planning to drug with children's Benadryl and take sexually explicit photos. Prosecutors say that acquaintance was actually an informant who...

Barring any late legal surprises, Mayor Bloomberg's 16-ounce cap on sugary sodas goes into effect on Tuesday, March 12. After that, restaurants, movie theaters, sports venues and food carts will not be permitted to sell extra-large portions of sugar-packed drinks. Stay calm. This does not signal the end of democracy in America. This is not the nanny state gone out of control. If we want Americans to be healthy, we are going to have to take actions like this - and many more - and do so soon -snip So-called "nanny-state" measures - like bans on driving while drunk, smoking...

Charlotte, NC --(Ammoland.com)- On Thursday, February 28, NRA-ILA, along with the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association, held a rally to protest New York’s recent attack on the Second Amendment–the passage of the so-called S.A.F.E. Act. The rally drew more than 10,000 law abiding gun owners. According to the New York State Police, it was one of the largest rallies ever held at the State Capital. NRA President David Keene was the featured speaker and told attendees that NRA is committed to helping repeal the S.A.F.E. Act, saying NRA would do “whatever is necessary”–including going to court–to defend...

It’s an education bombshell. Nearly 80 percent of New York City high school graduates need to relearn basic skills before they can enter the City University’s community college system. The number of kids behind the 8-ball is the highest in years, CBS 2′s Marcia Kramer reported Thursday. When they graduated from city high schools, students in a special remedial program at the Borough of Manhattan Community College couldn’t make the grade. They had to re-learn basic skills — reading, writing and math — first before they could begin college courses.

Northrop Grumman Corp. said Monday that it will move 850 jobs off Long Island by next year, leaving just 550 workers out of a workforce that exceeded 25,000 in the 1980s. The jobs are going to Florida and California in the latest cost-saving consolidation of functions by the aerospace company. It's acting in the face of steadily declining Pentagon budgets, including those in the current automatic spending cuts known as the sequestration. An unknown number of the 850 workers will be offered transfers, company spokesman Randy Belote said. The consolidation is expected to be completed sometime next year.

A Long Island Republican says his vote in favor of New York’s new gun-control law was a “mistake” and is now co-sponsoring a bill to repeal it. Freshman Sen. Phil Boyle, R-Suffolk County, issued a news release on Friday detailing his change of heart, criticizing the way the bill was rushed through the Legislature. The new law—known as the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act, or SAFE Act—violates the Second Amendment, Boyle claims. From Boyle’s statement: “The so-called SAFE act was a mistake. Its passage lacked transparency and public input and its wording was ill-conceived and of questionable legality. Lawmakers...

It was a chilly day yesterday in Albany, New York. Snow was still on the ground and a light breeze buzzed across the steps of the state capitol complex. Still, that didn't stop hundreds of citizens from coming out to protest the new "SAFE" Act of the New York State legislature, passed under lock and key swiftly after the Sandy Hook shootings. Urged by Governor Andrew Cuomo, it is by far the most restrictive in the country and has made tens of thousands of firearms in Upstate New York illegal. From across the state, especially the rural Upstate areas, people...
