A poll by the Des Moines Register published today offers multiple reasons for GOP joy. Jodi Ernst is breaking out into a lead that is beyond the poll’s margin of error, while, Harry Reid, in words he may regret, has gone on the record saying that an Ernst win portends the GOP taking the Senate. "What Joni Ernst would mean, coming to the United States Senate, is that Mitch McConnell would be the leader of the Senate, someone who agrees with her on virtually everything. Think what that would mean to our country," Reid said on Friday. Unless this is...

Federal agents turned off Internet access to three luxury villas at Caesars Palace then impersonated repair technicians to surreptitiously get inside and collect evidence in an investigation of online sports betting, according to defense lawyers challenging the practice. The FBI employed the ruse against the recommendation of an assistant U.S. attorney, Kimberly Frayn, according to lawyers for four of eight men charged in the case. They filed a motion late Tuesday in federal court in Las Vegas to dismiss evidence in the case. According to a conversation recorded by an investigator for the hotel, the prosecutor told FBI agents "it...

LAS VEGAS – O.J. Simpson's appeal for release from a Nevada prison is now in the hands of the state Supreme Court. Simpson lawyers argued in a final brief to the Nevada high court that a lower court judge was wrong to deny the former football star a new trial in his 2008 kidnapping and armed robbery conviction for a hotel room heist in Las Vegas. The filing, submitted Friday, came after Clark County prosecutors submitted documents Sept. 24 saying there was no need for another trial. The Supreme Court could decide to hear oral arguments, or they could issue...

Fall is in the air. The leaves are changing colors, football season is in full swing and people in battleground states are being inundated by candidates and commercials. In Washington, the GOP is already breaking out the champagne. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is already measuring the drapes in the majority leader’s office. The anticipation is that the Republican Party will sweep the midterm elections. The common wisdom is that the GOP will gain seats in the House of Representatives and more importantly take control of the Senate. But not so fast. Right now there are 45 Republicans in the...

College is getting more expensive. Tuition plus room and board at a four-year institution cost more than $23,000, on average, in the 2011-2012 school year, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, about $10,000 a year more than the price tag in 1991-1992. Paying for college takes a lot of planning, scrimping and saving. And no state does more to help its citizens save for their children’s future than Nevada.

Although same-sex marriage became legal on Oct. 9 in Nevada, some Las Vegas wedding chapels are refusing to perform the marriages.. Those places are, the American Civil Liberties Union says, breaking the law. An ACLU official on Thursday criticized what he said are “a small number” of for-profit wedding chapel owners who are refusing to perform such ceremonies because of their religious beliefs.

A 12-year Metro officer was arrested Thursday on charges linked to child pornography after a tip from Google led to a three-month investigation, Las Vegas police. Officer James Henry, 37, faces 10 counts each of possession of child pornography and distribution of child pornography, Metro said. Google notified the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that someone had uploaded an image of child pornography in June, according to Henry’s arrest report. That tip was forwarded to Metro on July 22. Investigators tracked the IP address linked to the image back to Henry’s home, the report said. A search of...

Family Court Judge William Potter responded Thursday to an allegation that he discriminated against a lesbian mother being deployed to Cuba. “Obviously I don’t have a problem with her being gay because I gave her custody,” the judge said. Potter’s comments stemmed from a Las Vegas Review-Journal story about the divorce case of Michelle Bagalawis, who since has changed her last name to Angeles, and Johnny Cardona. Angeles and Cardona, who have a 7-year-old son, were divorced in January 2012. Angeles, a first lieutenant in the Air Force, married a woman in March 2012. After Angeles’ recent deployment to Cuba,...

The Southern Nevada rancher who was criticized earlier this year for suggesting black people were better off as slaves is raising eyebrows again. Cliven Bundy appears in a campaign ad to elect an African-American man to Congress, saying he ought to be able to say what he wants without being labeled a racist. Third-party candidate Kamau Bakari appeared alongside Bundy and posted the video online last week. It’s since attracted more than 50,000 views on YouTube.

Nevada will oppose an effort by opponents of same-sex marriages to get the full 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to hear arguments to ban gay marriage in the Silver State, Gov. Brian Sandoval said Wednesday. The Republican governor provided a quick answer to an appeals court call for briefs within three weeks from the state and an advocacy group that won the right to gay marriage on behalf of eight Nevada same-sex couples. Sandoval said Nevada will oppose the petition by the Coalition for the Protection of Marriage.
  • Lesbian mom fighting to keep son in Las Vegas during military deployment

The lesbian mother of a 7-year-old boy is appealing to the Nevada Supreme Court to keep her son in Las Vegas during her four-month deployment to Cuba. According to an emergency petition filed by Air Force 1st Lt. Michelle Angeles, Family Court Judge William Potter applied a double standard when he ruled the boy must live with his father in Texas until she returns. “Michelle could only infer the double standard stemmed from her being married to another woman,” according to the document. The child flew to Texas on Saturday when the high court declined to intervene on an emergency...

Public Enemy No. 1 for rural Utah sheriffs just happens to be a fellow peace officer: Dan Love, the Bureau of Land Management’s special agent in charge. Elected law enforcement officers from Nephi to Blanding call him an arrogant and dishonest bully who has little regard for local authority and dodges accountability, derailing a collaborative approach to police work on the state’s federal lands. Love reportedly just laughed when Garfield County Sheriff James "Danny" Perkins relayed ranchers’ complaints about federal officers removing plastic feed tubs from the range and threatening the ranchers with litter citations. He drew early controversy during...

LAS VEGAS - The woman accused of setting her pet store on fire with puppies still inside entered a guilty plea in Clark County District Court Monday morning. Gloria Lee took a plea deal that had her plead guilty to one count of arson, one count of insurance fraud and one count of cruelty to animals. Prosecutors say Lee wanted to burn the business and collect the insurance money. Lee, and her co-defendant Kirk Bills, were accused of starting a fire at the Prince and Princess Pet Boutique on Jan. 27, 2014. A sprinkler system put out the fire and...

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Friday rejected a call for travel bans from Ebola-ravaged West Africa, suggesting that it was too early for such a move. “We have a lot of people in Sierra Leone and in places like Liberia who are dual citizens,” the Nevada Democrat said in Henderson. “If there was a ban they would just fly to smaller countries before coming here.” House Republicans had called for such a travel ban at a congressional hearing Thursday. President Barack Obama rejected the proposal on Friday. Reid also backed the Obama administration’s approach to the deadly, expressing...

The growing prospect of a Democratic wipeout on November 4 --of a GOP wave triggered by the president's serial incompetencies abroad and scandals at home, from the march of ISIS towards a massacre in Kobani to the incoherent response to travel restrictions on inbound passengers from West Africa to the collapses at the IRS, the VA, and the Secret Service and the growing inability of the CDC to transparently and fully communicate crucial details of Ebola's spread abroad and now at home-- has led to numerous Democratic candidates committing egregious acts of dirty, indeed filthy campaigning. Democratic Senator Mark Udall's...
