SALEM, Ore. — The first dead bull was found in a timbered ravine in eastern Oregon. There was no indication it had been shot, attacked by predators or eaten poisonous plants. The animal's sex organs and tongue had been removed. All the blood was gone. In the next few days, four more Hereford bulls were found within 1.5 miles in the same condition. There were no tracks around the carcasses. Ranch management and law enforcement suspect that someone killed the bulls. Ranch hands have been advised to travel in pairs and to go armed. Ever since the bulls were found...

A newly devised type of silica bead could help save melting glaciers from the onslaught of climate change, scientists say. The innovative new approach, developed by a company called Ice911, employs minuscule beads of 'glass' which are spread across the surface layer of glaciers. There they help to reflect light beating down on them and slow what has become a tremendous pace of melt throughout the last several years. 'I just asked myself a very simple question: Is there a safe material that could help replace that lost reflectivity?' Found of Ice911, Leslie Field, told Mother Jones. What they landed...

Speaker Nancy Pelosi plans to end months of caution on impeachment Tuesday afternoon, launching a formal inquiry aimed at removing President Donald Trump over allegations he withheld aid from Ukraine to pressure that country to launch a corruption inquiry aimed at damaging former Vice President Joe Biden. All 13 Texas Democrats in Congress support impeachment or are at least open to it, after five holdouts joined the chorus in the hours before her announcement, some more enthusiastic than others. Texas Republicans remained unified in their opposition to impeachment, even as Democrats around the country lined up to demand impeachment on...

Democratic superstar Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spent an hour with First Lady Chirlane McCray on Friday discussing mental health issues. Cortez told reporters gathered outside of Gracie Mansion afterward that she and McCray spent much of the time talking about the First Lady’s mental health initiative. “It went really well, we were discussing the first lady’s mental health program throughout New York City and we are trying to figure out ways that we can really create conversations around mental health in communities,” the congresswoman-elect said.

MSNBC contributor Steve Schmidt says conservative radio hosts like Rush Limbaugh and Mark Levin have “blood on their hands” for mass shootings and other crimes perpetrated by “crazy people.” The Republican strategist told “All In” host Chris Hayes this week that a recent mail bomb threat to prominent Democrats, along with the Tree of Life synagogue massacre that claimed 11 lives, were partially incited by well-known conservative men and ideologically aligned organizations. “Mark Levin, and Rush Limbaugh, and Breitbart, and NewsBusters, and Judicial Watch, and all the rest of them, have blood on their hands for the incitements that they...

The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that it is lawful to discriminate against transgender workers based on their gender identity, according to Bloomberg Law. In a brief to the Supreme Court, the DOJ wrote that federal civil rights law banning sex discrimination in the workplace does not extend to transgender people. The filing comes as the Supreme Court weighs whether to take on a case in which a lower court ruled the 1964 Civil Rights Act can be interpreted to protect transgender workers against bias and discrimination. "This administration is not a friend of the...

A pair of Pennsylvania treasure hunters and their lawyer are accusing the FBI of playing games and acting suspiciously about a dig at a rural site believed to contain a massive stash of Civil War-era gold -- which may be worth up to $250 million. The accusations from Dennis and Kem Parada, and their attorney, Bill Cluck, came months after the bureau said it dug a hole in Dents Run and found nothing. The father-and-son duo felt convinced that area of state-owned wilderness northeast of Pittsburgh holds a hidden stash of gold and the pair claim the FBI went back...

On Tuesday, The Washington Post reported its new ABC News-Washington Post poll on mass shootings on the front page. They asked: “Do you think that mass shootings in this country are more a reflection of problems identifying and treating people with mental health problems, or inadequate gun control laws?" By more than two to one (57 to 28 percent), people picked the mental health issues. On this shooting in particular, that divide might seem obvious. Actually, that poll finding was nowhere to be found in the Post story. ABC's Jonathan Karl briefly mentioned it as "interesting" on Tuesday's Good Morning...

“How much different is it from praying to God that your candidate wins?” asked one attendee. BUSHWICK, BROOKLYN – President Donald Trump has elicited all kinds of protests around the country. On Friday night, a gathering of dissenters in Bushwick created one of the most imaginative – a hexing ceremony. About a dozen people gathered at occult bookstore Catland on Flushing Avenue, near Central Avenue, to put a malevolent spell on the president. The ceremony was simple enough. Catland honcho Dakota Bracciale set up an altar with a skull, some other bones and mason jars filled with crumbled wads of...

Attila descendants want recognition By Kate Connolly in Berlin (Filed: 12/01/2005) More than 2,000 Hungarian descendants of Attila the Hun, once described as the "Scourge of God", are demanding official recognition as an ethnic minority. "As a member of the European Union, Hungary should not be suppressing a minority," said Joshua Imre Novak, the group's self-appointed leader. Mr Novak has collected more than 1,000 signatures to pursue the group's claim through Hungary's parliament. Many experts dismiss the group's initiative as bogus, arguing that Hungary has no existing descendants of the barbarians who gave the country its name. Under Hungarian law,...

Sheriff Jon Held said deputies went to Smith's home Tuesday morning and took him into custody. “He didn't resist, but he was a little confused at first,” Held said. Prosecutors...

It's controlled after-school anarchy at the Christian-Carter household. Seven-year-old Chloe has rolled herself up in an exercise mat in the living room of the family's lovely Oakland, Calif., home. "Look I'm a burrito," Chloe shouts. Her 4-year-old sister, Jackie, swoops in for a bite — and a hard push. "Ow!" Chloe shouts. "Mom! Jackie pushed me!" Just two sisters playing, occasionally sparring, as dad, James Christian, and mom, Mary Carter, watch nearby. Jackie's birthday is in mid-October, but for Carter and Christian, a second date is seared in memory almost as intensely — what Carter calls "The Day." Five Makeshift...

California Gov says yes to poisoning more children with mercury and aluminum in manditory vaccines,” he said. “This corporate fascist must be stopped.” He went on to say the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is corrupt because they “can’t solve a problem they helped start.” Carrey, who lives in Los Angeles, said he does not oppose vaccines, but is rather “anti-neurotoxin.” He believes vaccines should be free of chemicals and certain compounds, such as mercury and thimerosal. “All we are saying is, 'Take the neurotoxins out of the vaccines.' Make them toxin free. History will show that that...
