A county official says reports of an active shooter at a school in North Carolina turned out to be malfunctioning water heater. News reports quote Pender County emergency management director Tom Collins as saying that noise from the water heater was taken for the sound of gunfire at Topsail High School on Friday morning. The earlier report of shots fired provoked a massive response by law enforcement and caused the school district to reroute buses and put schools on lockdown.

The FBI said investigators need help to identify a person seen walking near the area where a 13-year-old Lumberton girl was abducted on Nov. 5. The FBI released a new missing person poster for Hania Noelia Aguilar on Friday. On the poster, the photos that show Hania wearing red were taken the day before the abduction. A volunteer at an early-voting site in Pitt County says she was assaulted by the Democratic candidate for district attorney over the weekend, the state Republican Party reported Thursday. Early voting nearly turned violent in Charlotte on Wednesday, when a Republican volunteer was confronted by a man who showed a gun at a Mecklenburg County polling place, police said.
