CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - An Egyptian immigrant who killed two people at Los Angeles International Airport wasn't tied to terrorist organizations and didn't apply for asylum in the United States, his wife said Wednesday. Hesham Mohamed Hadayet opened fire at Israel's El Al ticket counter in July, killing two people before he was fatally shot by one of the airline's security guards. Hadayet's wife, Hala El-Awadly, was responding to a Wednesday report in the Los Angeles Times that quoted U.S. immigration officials as saying Hadayet applied for political asylum in 1992. The report said Egyptian authorities suspected he was affiliated...

Wow. Remember, do not question his motives. I dunno if the fact that Sulejman Talovic is a Muslim refugee has anything to do with this vile act, but since we are kind of at war with the jihadis, it does seem like a good place to start. We should also remember that the Islamist message boards have been encouraging potential jihadis to keep it simple. Also, it's important to think about the role of the internet in creating "virtual cells" of mujahideen. That is, jihadis who may never physically meet or formally join an terror organization, but who encourage one...

When Sulejmen Talovic entered the Trolley Square mall in Salt Lake City Monday night with a shotgun, a pistol, and a backpack full of ammunition, he intended to “kill a large number of people,” according to Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank. Talovic killed five people and wounded four before he himself was killed by an off-duty Ogden police officer who happened to be in the mall. Why did Talovic do it? No one knows. Talovic’s aunt, Ajka Omerovic, told reporters: “We want to know what happened, just like you guys. We have no idea...We know him as a...

As a gunman unleashed his terror at Trolley Square on Monday evening, dozens of workers and customers fled for cover. Some of them ran toward the shots to get a glimpse of the gunman. Others came across shooting victims, both dead and alive. These are their stories, as told to five Salt Lake Tribune reporters at the scene: Jeremy Jensen, 26, of Salt Lake City, at Desert Edge Brew Pub, said he saw the shooter several hours earlier walking through the brewery. He remembered his long tan trenchcoat and that he had a mullet midway down his back. He said...

The shooting rampage at Trolley Square was not Sulejman Talovic's first act of violence. At age 12, Talovic was before a judge for allegedly holding a knife over the head of girl while stating, "I'll kill you," according to a source who is familiar with the case. Two years earlier, Talovic was referred to juvenile court for throwing rocks at a little girl. About the same time, he threatened his parents' landlord with a knife. The first girl was not struck by the stones. And the mother of the second girl snatched her up in the nick of time, just...

With a copy of the Quran and a Palestinian flag in his trunk, a Jordanian-turned-U.S. citizen crashed his car into a Home Depot in Arizona where he formerly worked, igniting an explosive blaze in the stores' paint section and causing $1 million in damage. The Dec. 18 attack in Chandler, Ariz., by 24-year-old Ali R. Warrayat was a carefully planned "personal statement," the East Valley Tribune of Mesa, Ariz., reported. Warrayat, a student at Arizona State University in Mesa, had his car radio blasting with Arabic music to drown out the yells of employee he might encounter, the paper said....

Newly released FBI documents say a 15-year-old boy who stole a plane and crashed it into a skyscraper might have originally targeted MacDill Air Force Base in his suicide mission. An FBI review of Charles Bishop's Internet activity showed the teen sought maps of the base and information about it. He also sent an e-mail to a classmate asking where Central Command was located on the base. Bishop died on Jan. 5, 2002, when he flew a Cessna stolen from a flight school into the Bank of America building in downtown Tampa. He left a note expressing sympathy for Osama...

Picture Emerges of Teen Suicide Pilot CHARLES BISHOP: To some, he was a smart, humorous student, which makes his suicide flight all the more incomprehensible. By CURTIS KRUEGER, KATHERINE GAZELLA and ED QUIOCO © St. Petersburg Times published January 8, 2002 ----------- Charles Bishop was a teacher's dream. He read Shakespeare in class, pulled together a middle school literary magazine and enjoyed a good game of flag football. Friends and family members who knew him best described Charles as a patriot. The teen who flew an airplane into the Bank of America building, carrying a note sympathizing with Osama bin...

A fifteen-year-old student pilot apparently trying to recreate the 9/11 kamikaze attack on the World Trade Center slammed a stolen Cessna 172 private airplane Saturday into Tampa, Florida's Bank of America building, the city's tallest structure. Charles J. Bishop, a 15-year-old flight student from Great Britain, stole the small aircraft from Albert Whitted Municipal Airport in nearby St. Petersburg at about 5 p.m., law enforcement sources said. Bishop was killed as the Cessna carrying 56 gallons of fuel slammed into the Bank of America tower, leaving the tail section of the plane dangling precariously from its side. The fuel did ...

Step into the Wayback Machine with me for a moment. The year is 1942. The United States is at war with the Axis Powers (Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, Imperial Japan). So far, America has been taking a real beating. All the war news is bad, and getting worse. The Japanese chased Douglas MacArthur all the way to Australia, occupying the Far East and taking hundreds of thousands of Allies prisoner. The Germans conquered all of Europe in a matter of months, occupying Europe from the Baltics to the English Channel virtually unopposed. The Italians owned North Africa. America had yet...
