TRENTON, N.J. – Republican Chris Christie has defeated Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine in New Jersey. With 71 percent of precincts reporting Tuesday night, Christie had 50 percent of the vote to Corzine's 44 percent. Christie, a 47-year-old former federal prosecutor, became the first member of his party in a dozen years to win a statewide contest in heavily Democratic New Jersey. The Republican victory deals a blow to President Barack Obama as he readies for next year's midterm elections. Obama campaigned heavily for Corzine.

Real Clear Politics does not believe there are enough votes out there for Corzine to pull it out. It appears the Republicans will turn this very blue state red. 8:47 pm central - It is looking more and more like Chris Christie will win this race. He is up 12 points with 63 percent of the precincts reporting.

Chris Christie has on the New Jersey Governor’s election with a plurality THE POLITICIZER projects. Why we’re calling the race: Corzine is under performing in counties he won in 2005. Bergen County, where any Democrat needs to win by 4-5% to win the state, Corzine is tied with Christie (80% reporting) Corzine has lost Gloucester County, where he won in 2005 by 10% Corzine is under performing in heavily Democratic counties like Hudson, Essex and Camden. Chris Daggett is under performing in heavily Republican counties, allowing Christie a larger margin of victory in GOP counties than Corzine is getting in...

This seems pretty darn big: In New Jersey, CNN's exit poll says Christie won independents 58-33 over Corzine, with indies making up 27 percent of the electorate. Public Policy Polling notes that their final poll had Christie winning the independents by 23; the exit polls indicate Christie won them by 25. They interpret this as a sign that most Daggett supporters and undecideds went into the Christie pile. PPP's final poll put Christie up 6 overall. 11/03 07:48 PM

A New Jersey hospital is denying accusations that ACORN workers have been inside collecting absentee ballots for the state's gubernatorial race. East Orange General Hospital CEO Kevin Slavin said Tuesday that "all proper protocols" were followed as part of its program to allow patients to vote via absentee ballot, and that no third-party groups were signing up patients. "Other than the specifically designated and trained staff to hand out and collect these ballots, no advocacy groups were authorized nor allowed access to the hospital to hand out absentee ballots to patients as has been recently reported in unsubstantiated blogs and...

Everybody and their brother thinks that New Jersey is going to go down to the wire. But one of my readers is plugged in to a New Jersey Democrat, and this guy's running of the numbers goes to Republican Chris Christie winning by one percentage point. Newark projected numbers fewer than 2005 for Corzine By MAX PIZARRO, PolitickerNJ.com Reporter NEWARK - Corroborated sources from the city's five wards show the city underperforming compared to the 2005 governor's race. Four years ago, Jon Corzine received 39,600 votes in the state's biggest city. Right now, projections show the governor receiving 33,200 votes or 8,000 votes in the North Ward, 8,000 in the South Ward, 7,000 in the West Ward, 4,200 in the East Ward, and 6,000 in the Central Ward.

Dear Friends, I pulled this twit from Doug Hoffman's Campaign facebook page: Tweet, Facebook, text, IM, make calls -- but get out the vote. Let the voice of the people, not the Pelosis be heard. #tcot LETS GET GOING AND Make some GOTV calls for him, and other buzz on the webb to help keep Mr. Hoffman's momentum gong..! The same can be said for Mr. Christie up in New Jersey as well..(and Harmer in CA 10), McDonnell.

From one of my readers in Newark: "Figured I'd shoot you an update before the after-work rush. There has been a slight uptick in in turnout, but the biggest uptick is number of unions guys out there. The streets of Newark are crawling with people in SEIU purple shirts. They are near polling places, placing campaign lit on cars, and all the kind of stuff. Big labor is heavily invested in a Corzine win and Corzine is dependent upon them for his GOTV so it is not surprising to us that they are out there, just that it took them...

NEWARK - U.S. Rep. Donald Payne (D-Newark) stands in front of headquarters on Bergen in the South Ward and he's guardedly optimistic. The South Ward is now at 4,000 votes recorded, or a fifth of what the South Ward attained in 2008 for President Barack Obama. Before the end of Election Day, Payne wants to get 12,000 votes for Gov. Jon Corzine in this ward, the biggest in the city, and the one where Mayor Cory Booker is arguably the least popular. This is former Mayor Sharpe James's old ward, and at the Galilee Baptist Church - the polling place...

New Jersey Democrats have admitted that a series of robocalls on behalf of third party candidate for governor Chris Daggett were paid for by the Democratic State Committee - final proof that Daggett has been a spoiler for Republican Chris Christie all along. Matt Friedman of Politiker New Jersey writes: A Democratic spokeswoman says the party's chairman, Joe Cryan, was not aware of the robocalls when he denied that the state committee had anything to do with them yesterday afternoon. Cryan, who told PolitickerNJ.com yesterday afternoon that the Democratic State Committee had "absolutely" nothing to do with the call, could...

In New Jersey, Turnout Higher In GOP and Swing Districts Than In Democrats I want to preface this by noting that all of this is based only on the early voting, and is based on about a half-dozen polling places in every county in New Jersey; some known as historically Republican districts, some known as historically swing districts, and some known as historically Democratic districts. A trusted source tells me that as of noon, total turnout in the GOP the swing districts in NJ is significantly outpacing turnout in Democrat districts. The turnout ratio is not quite two to one,...

And then find out that the men were sent into the neighborhood by the Democratic Party for GOTV operations - complete with lists of voters names, addresses and phones numbers! That is what happened Sunday on a...

The slaying of a 64-year-old Catholic nun in her convent over the weekend has stunned and saddened a small Navajo Nation community about 30 miles northwest of Gallup. The FBI is looking for suspects in the death of Sister Marguerite Bartz, a 10-year resident of the community of Navajo, who was killed on church property at St. Berard Mission Church. The FBI would not release details about the manner of death or other aspects of the investigation. They confirmed they are looking for a suspect or suspects who may be armed and dangerous, as well as the vehicle Bartz had...

New York beef manufacturer Fairbanks Farms has issued a voluntary recall of a little more than half a million pounds of ground beef. The recall, which affects states from Maine to North Carolina -- Maryland included -- comes after one person died in New Hampshire and people were sickened in other states after eating beef thought to be contaminated by the bacteria E.coli. The products, which include ground beef, meatloaf and meatball mix, carry sell-by dates from Sept. 19-28 and were sold under such brands as Trader Joe's Butcher Shop Fine Quality Meats, Giant Meatloaf & Meatball Mix and BJ's...

Michael Palin and Terry Jones have complained that Chris Christie, the Republican candidate for the New Jersey governorship, used clips from a Monty Python sketch in a campaign advertisement. Mr Christie, who hopes to unseat his Democratic rival Jon Corzine as governor in an election on Tuesday, removed the video from his website and YouTube page hours after complaints from Michael Palin and Terry Jones. The offending advertisement featured Palin in a vintage Monty Python's Flying Circus piece as a television presenter asking viewers if they had ever suffered from déjà vu and then repeating the question several times. Mr...

I will vote here in Pennsylvania in spite of many lousy choices on my state and local ballot today, but I want to encourage people in other places to get out and vote. I am enthusiatically cheering on the Conservative Party candidate in New York, Doug Hoffman. A victory for Doug Hoffman today in New York 23 is a win for the Conservative Party, not the Republican Party. RNC friendly spinners may tell a different story on television tonight, but for a Conservative Party candidate to force out the Republican candidate and maybe get over 50 percent of the vote...

Fearing a potentially devastating Democratic loss, the highly controversial Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) group and its affiliated organizations are gearing up to tip the scales and re-elect embattled incumbent in the hard-fought New Jersey gubernatorial race, sources tell Newsmax. "Acorn is heavily involved in Gov. Jon Corzine's get-out-the-vote operation, but is maintaining a low profile at the insistence of the Corzine campaign," Matthew Vadum, senior editor of the conservative Capitol Research Center think tank, tells Newsmax. "If Corzine manages to win reelection, he doesn't want the victory tainted by his close association with Acorn." Wall Street...

After Jon Corzine appeared to pull back into the race for his re-election to the governor’s chair in New Jersey, Barack Obama poured on the support to help push him over the top. According to the final PPP poll in New Jersey, it didn’t work. Corzine has fallen off the pace and now trails outside the margin of error in the Garden State, with Chris Christie pulling away in the final week: Chris Christie leads Jon Corzine 47-41 in PPP’s final poll of the New Jersey Governor’s race, with Chris Daggett at 11%. Corzine had pulled to within a point...

This news breaks too late to make much of a difference, but it simply confirms what many have long suspected: that the Democrats have so much of a vested interest in independent Christopher Daggett splitting the anti-incumbent vote that they are putting resources into promoting him. The Democratic State Committee now admits paying for a robocall to Somerset County voters that slams Republican Chris Christie and promotes independent gubernatorial candidate Christopher Daggett. A Democratic spokeswoman says the party’s chairman, Joe Cryan, was not aware of the robocalls when he denied that the state committee had anything to do with them...

Is There Late Movement to Republican Christie in NJ? Or is the World Series Affecting Who Pollsters Reach? On Election Eve in New Jersey, with a New York City team and a Philadelphia team in the World Series, Republican Chris Christie may have slight late momentum in his bid to unseat incumbent Democrat Jon Corzine, according to a SurveyUSA tracking poll conducted for WABC-TV. The candidates remain today within the theoretical margin of sampling error, as they have been in each of SurveyUSA's 5 tracking NJ polls. At the wire, Christie 45%, Corzine 42%. Interviews were conducted Friday 10/30/09 through...

Combating global warming with a "green superhighway" of high-voltage power lines — that large groups of consumers then have to pay for — could be bad news for New Jersey, say state leaders, environmental activists and utility companies. Governor Corzine joined governors from nine other Atlantic coast states in opposing the idea. Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., voted against a major energy bill because of it. And the heads of the state's Sierra Club chapter and its biggest electric company, who are fighting in court over other power plant issues, are united against it. They all say the plan, intended to...

Addressing a crowded room at the local Elks Lodge, not far from one of North Jersey’s ubiquitous shopping malls, Republican gubernatorial candidate Chris Christie paints a bleak portrait of his home state. New Jersey is “careening towards bankruptcy,” says the former U.S. attorney. “People and jobs” are fleeing “in droves,” mainly because of stifling levels of taxation. The Garden State is “no longer competitive,” and “businesses are voting with their feet.” Is Christie overstating things? After all, blessed with felicitous geography and a highly educated work force, New Jersey remains the most densely populated state in the Union, and also...

The Rev. Reginald Jackson, who last week announced he was throwing his coveted support to incumbent Gov. Jon Corzine, received $87,000 in donations from the multimillionaire governor last year, Jackson confirmed yesterday. According to Corzine's 2008 tax returns, the governor made a $50,000 donation to Jackson's congregation, St. Matthew AME Church in Orange. Corzine gave another $37,000 to St. Matthew from his philanthropic foundation, Jackson said. He explained the smaller sum was contributed early in 2008 and the $50,000 was donated in July last year, shortly after the governor began raising money for his re-election campaign. The contributions were the...

The GOP is counting on a few wins tomorrow after four years of losing. And futures market traders seem to favor them. At the Intrade futures market, they sell contracts that depend on election outcomes. If a candidate wins, his contract pays $100. If he loses, it becomes worthless. In the weeks leading up to an election, contracts are bought and sold between market participants, and the going price offers an indication of how the market views the race. In 2004, Intrade participants correctly predicted every state's presidential outcome. In 2008, they predicted them all correctly except for Indiana, which...

If you suspect problems at the polls e-mail: Voterfraud@Foxnews.com ------- It is "very easy" to steal an election using absentee ballots, claims Jan Tyler, a former Denver Elections Commissioner who now runs the website National Election Reform Examiner. She said some people shoveling her driveway, for example, told her they knew that "six or seven absentee ballots were sent to dead people," and she fears the numbers across the country could be much larger than experts believe and that prosecutors do not take infractions seriously enough. Fox News has found ongoing allegations of absentee ballot fraud in at least a...

With one day to go before the closely watched New Jersey governor’s race, Republican challenger Chris Christie has taken a slight lead over Gov. Jon Corzine in two new polls released this morning. Christie, a former US attorney, led Corzine by six points, 47 percent to the Democrat’s 41 percent, according to a Public Policy Polling survey of almost 1000 Garden State voters. Independent candidate Chris Dagger racks up 11 percent of the vote in the PPP survey. The Quinnipiac poll shows a much tighter race, with Christie leading by a mere two points, which is within the poll’s 2.5...

The race for governor in New Jersey is so close in final polls that it may well end up in a recount -- the 1981 election did and was decided by less than 1,800 votes. If there is a recount, you can bet disputes about absentee ballots will loom large. Moreover, if serious allegations of fraud emerge, you can also expect less-than-vigorous investigation by the Obama Justice Department -- which showed just how seriously it takes such allegations when it walked away from an open-and-shut voter intimidation case against the New Black Panther Party in Philadelphia earlier this year. Plenty...

Big Government’s open about the fact that this is an issue: Will Corzine Allies Steal the Election in New Jersey? ACORN, Dirty Tricks and Absentee Ballot Fraud New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine is locked in the political fight of his life. With just hours left before voting, polls show a neck-and-neck race between Corzine and GOP candidate Chris Christie, with Independent candidate Chris Daggett pulling significant support. Obama and VP Biden are making last ditch pitches for the embattled governor. But evidence is building that Corzine’s campaign may see its only salvation is in rigging the election. What can you...

It's been a long year. Many conservatives have been confused about what to do in the race for Governor of New Jersey. Some establishment Republicans didn't help matters with things they did or didn't do. But that's all in the past now. It's in the past because we know who is counting on Jon Corzine to win. He was here today, in both Camden and Newark, and he said that Corzine was "one of the best partners I have in the White House...we work together. We know our work is far from over." That's right. The radical national agenda of...

In the see-saw New Jersey Governor's race, Republican challenger Christopher Christie has 42 percent to Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine's 40 points, with 12 percent for independent candidate Christopher Daggett, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Six percent remain undecided. This compares to a 43 - 38 percent Gov. Corzine lead, with 13 percent for Daggett, in an October 28 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. Among Daggett supporters, 38 percent say they might change their mind: 39 percent say Corzine is their second choice, while 29 percent say Christie is number two. Only 10 percent of Christie...

Just as they did in the 2008 elections, Democrats running in the top 2009 elections in New Jersey, New York and Virginia have sought to tie their Republican or conservative opponent to former President George W. Bush. Here's a sampling of the attacks: "Voters have a clear choice on Tuesday: They can elect to go back to the George Bush economic agenda, or they can vote to move forward," read a statement released Saturday by Democrat Bill Owens, who is opposing Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman for New York's 23rd Congressional District seat. "What can you expect from Chris Christie?...

Trying to appeal to voters in New Jersey’s urban centers, President Obama made his second campaign stop of the day for Democratic Governor Jon Corzine at Newark’s Prudential Center. The President began by describing the economic challenges facing American families, but he took pains to remind the audience that the worst recession since the Great Depression “didn’t start on Jon’s watch…didn’t start on my watch…[there’s] a little amnesia about how we got into this mess.” He then went into a drawn-out mopping metaphor that drew laughs: “I’m more than happy to go ahead and do the work required to get...

'm writing about this for my USA Today column, but the Frank Rich hissy fit is a perfect example of the real story of the election. The story is not that the GOP is self-destructing, it is that the conventional wisdom is being shown to be ludicrous. For some time now Frank Rich, Sam Tanenhaus and countless others (including David Frum) have been arguing that the GOP is a rump party and the only way for it to survive is for it to embrace me-too Republicanism of one flavor or another. The story of all three major races (VA, NJ,...

[snip] A Daggett spokesman acknowledges that Daggett’s claim on MSNBC was incorrect. “She never contacted us asking us to drop out,” Daggett spokesman Tom Johnson told ABC News. Johnson said Daggett got the incorrect impression about Palin from people on his campaign bus who themselves were mistaken and relying on an unsubstantiated blog item. “Someone wrote mistakenly on a blog that Sarah Palin asked Chris Daggett to drop out of the race,” said Johnson. Kevin Gass, a volunteer traveling on the Daggett campaign bus, heard the incorrect Palin item, assumed that it was true and twittered about it from the...

A Paramus man claiming to work for Gov. Jon Corzine's re-election campaign was arrested Friday night on drug charges after police found Ecstasy tablets in his car, authorities said. A Corzine spokeswoman said the man does not work for either the governor's campaign or the Democratic State Committee. Jason Shih, 25, was pulled over on Route 17 by East Rutherford police around 11:30 p.m. Friday for allegedly talking on his cell phone. Police found 19 Ecstasy tablets and hundreds of small glassine bags used for distributing drugs, police spokesman Capt. William Schanel said. Schanel said Shih told police he was...

Chris Christie leads Jon Corzine 47-41 in PPP's final poll of the New Jersey Governor's race, with Chris Daggett at 11%. Corzine had pulled to within a point of Christie on our poll three weeks ago after trailing by as many as 14 points over the summer, but his momentum has stalled since then and Christie's built his lead back up to 4 points last week and now 6. Christie's advantage is due largely to his support from independents and because he has Republicans more unified around him than the Democrats are around Corzine. Christie leads Corzine 52-29 with indies,...
