We are a little over two weeks away from the election. So I ask you the same question I asked myself. Who is going to win the battle for the senate? I have done extensive research and watched the trends for a while now, just like many of you. I finished a week ago a statistical analysis of voting trends in Georgia. Let me also state that most elections are referendums on the incumbents. Candidates have to expose the incumbent. Dole failed to do this in 1996. So here are my predictions. GA- Max Cleland is in trouble. Do not...

In the race for Rep. Marge Roukema's 5th district House seat, Republican E. Scott Garrett leads Democrat Anne Ricks Sumers by a 48%-33% margin, according to a poll conducted by Public Opinion Strategies for the National Republican Congressional Committee.

The Sumers campaign disputes the NRCC numbers and released their own internal poll from last week, which shows the race in a statistical dead heat, Garrett 42%, Sumers 40%. The Democratic poll shows Sumers leading Garrett by eight points in the Bergen County portion of the district, and losing by 21 points in the other three counties.

Protest Saturday at Lautenburg HQ (Let's Make Some News) 10-17-02 | Jonathan M. Stein Posted on 10/17/2002 6:07 PM Pacific by jmstein7 Is anyone interested in staging a protest in front of Lautenburg HQ on Saturday demanding that he debate and give NJ voters a choice? I bet it would make the news, and it would certainly be mentioned on MTP Sunday if it was big and loud enough. Mail me and/or respond to this thread if you are interested. I can attend and would be more than happy to organize the function as I live in the area. This...

When we as Republicans are questioned about what Bush is doing for the economy we should remind Democrats that it has been done and Dashle and the Democrats are sitting on it. For example. Bush's terrorism proposal would create at least 300,000 jobs. His Energy plan would create hundreds of thousands of jobs and reduce and eventually remove our need for foreign oil and provide huge supplies of natural gas. The removal of the marriage tax and death tax would also spur economic growth. As would making the current tax cuts permanent. tombeach

URGENT -- Call Doug Forrester! (NJ Senate Race) It’s not too late to help Doug win and to save his campaign. Please CALL his campaign HQ at 609-890-4699. Why? Simple! It’s time for Doug to throw down the gauntlet, get on television, and PUBLICALLY CHALLENGE LAUTENBERG to a ONE-ON-ONE debate in a 15 or 30 second ad spot. Negative ads can only do so much, and from the polls, it looks like the viability of negative ads is negligible. So, call Doug Forrester at 609-890-4699 and DEMAND that he run an ad that shows him personally challenging Lautenberg to a...

Frank R. Lautenberg wants all candidates included. Douglas Forrester sees a ploy to evade a direct duel. By Tom Turcol Inquirer Staff Writer Former Democratic Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg, seeming to retreat from his call for head-to-head debates with Republican Douglas Forrester, is now demanding that any debates include all the third-party candidates in New Jersey's U.S. Senate race. Forrester quickly accused Lautenberg of trying to dodge a direct encounter, including two that ABC's This Week and NBC's Meet the Press are trying to schedule for their nationally televised Sunday programs. Lautenberg's new proposal shows that he is "deathly afraid...

Do you feel strongly that America's electoral system is fundamentally in trouble since the election of 2000? Do you have trouble articulating your point of view? I too have struggled with this issue long and hard. I believe I've carefully digested all the issues and put together a good argument for you to take to your debates and discussions with your friends and adversaries. In all three cases of electoral controversy, from the allowing of late votes by a judge's decree in 2000 that allowed a dead Democrat to defeat Republican John Ashcroft in Missouri, to forcing additional counts of...

The eleventh-hour substitution of former Sen. Frank Lautenberg for Sen. Robert Torricelli has turned the U.S. Senate contest from what appeared to be a certain loss for Democrats into a horse race, according to a Star-Ledger/Eagleton-Rutgers Poll released yesterday.

Among respondents who said they are likely to vote Nov. 5, the race between Lautenberg and Republican Douglas Forrester is a dead heat -- 44 percent to 44 percent. Among potential voters, Lautenberg holds a 46 percent to 40 percent lead.

After leading Torricelli, Forrester narrowly trails Lautenberg By STEVE KORNACKI PoliticsNJ.com WOODBRIDGE, October 7 - Former Sen. Frank Lautenberg is receiving a much warmer reception from New Jersey voters than Sen. Robert Torricelli did this year, but according to a new Quinnipiac University poll the way in which Lautenberg secured a spot on the ballot is keeping the race too close to call. Lautenberg holds a 49%-45% lead over Republican Douglas Forrester, but the Democrat's four-percent cushion falls with the poll's margin of error. A poll by Quinnipiac several weeks ago placed Torricelli behind Forrester by four points. 54 percent...

By Dale Russakoff Washington Post Staff Writer Sunday, October 6, 2002; Page A04 CLIFTON, N.J. -- The outside world assumes New Jersey voters are incensed at the Democratic Party for making them a national laughingstock. State Republican chairman Joe Kyrillos said he's getting calls of support from across the United States. "There's real outrage around the country," said Kyrillos, a state senator. "It accosts people's sense of fair play." But once you enter New Jersey, a funny thing happens to the outrage over the Democrats' last-minute decision to switch Senate candidates -- substituting retired, three-term senator Frank R. Lautenberg for...

Lautenberg Retracts Promise for 21 Debates A spokesman for Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Frank Lautenberg has retracted Lautenberg's promise, offered just yesterday, that he would meet his Republican opponent Doug Forrester for 21 debates in different New Jersey counties before Election Day. Asked whether his boss intended to honor the 21-debate pledge, Lautenberg spokesman Tom Shea told WABC Radio's Steve Malzberg, "Absolutely not." "We'll do debates," Shea explained. "The voters of the state will have plenty of opportunities to hear the two candidates. Twenty-one debates in 21 counties with only 30 days left in the race is a little impractical."...

I read the news today (oh, boy), and the stories on the appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court gave the impression that it was a real long shot – i.e. having certiorari granted. Why would that be? The relevant NJ election statute (19:13-20) is very clear and reads as follows: A selection made pursuant to subsection (c) and a statement of the selection SHALL be filed not later than the 48th day before the election. The relevant portion of subsection (c) says simply: . . .for a statewide office, the candidate shall be selected by the State committee of the...

Forrester Challenges Potential Senate Rival to 21 Debates Lautenberg refuses to appear with Forrester on Fox News Sunday (HAMILTON, October 4) – Today U.S. Senate candidate Doug Forrester challenged potential rival Frank Lautenberg to 21 debates – one in each New Jersey county. Forrester made the announcement at a media availability with U.S. Senator Fred Thompson at the Newark Marriott Hotel. “I’m going on Fox News Sunday this weekend – and I’ll be on all alone. New Jersey Senate Douglas Forrester (R) and Frank Lautenberg (D), even Forrester's chances downgraded to 50% Oct. 2 from 53.3% as a result of the court ruling placing Lautenberg on the ballot. DEMOCRATIC SEAT AT CRITICAL RISK Torricelli's dramatic withdrawal scrambles this race. It's now time to hear from the voters to see how they react to this incredible, unprecedented Democratic switcharoo. Lautenberg was probably the strongest candidate the Democrats could have offered. He has statewide recognition and respect, removed from Torricelli's personal negatives. Of course, the courts are not yet finished their reviews, so things could still change from...

Below is the statute in question. I'm new here, so sorry for being redundant. But where in the NJ law does it say what to do when there are fewer than 51 days left in an election? I don't see it. Am I missing it? I keep reading everyone and hearing the commentators about the law was blatantly broken. I'd like to believe that, but I don't see it yet. You could read the first paragraph below as meaning "What we'll do up until the 51st day and we don't have an answer for beyond that." Or you can read...

Scrambling to save their one-vote majority in the U.S. Senate, Democrats in Washington and Trenton yesterday began preparing for what could be a $20 million blitz over the next five weeks to elect their substitute candidate in New Jersey, former Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg. Satisfied with Lautenberg's selection to replace Sen. Robert G. Torricelli, who withdrew this week as the Democratic candidate, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee prepared to spend millions to keep the New Jersey seat. At the same time, Gov. McGreevey was cranking up the state Democratic machinery, placing key members of his political team in charge of...

Democratic Sen. Robert Torricelli's announcement that he was pulling out of the New Jersey Senate race this week looked like a confession of guilt in a Soviet show trial. In the reflection of his dewy eyes, you could almost see Terry McAuliffe mouthing the words to him from the audience. Especially the part where he paid tribute to the great Bill Clinton, to whom Torricelli evidently owes his deeply ingrained sense of ethics. Torricelli will leave public office with just the clothes on his back, a Rolex watch and other assorted jewelry, a TV set, a couple of racks of...

WASHINGTON, Sept. 21 — Prominent national Democrats now regard Senator Robert G. Torricelli of New Jersey as their party's most vulnerable Senate incumbent, prompting concern that his endangered seat might cost Democrats control of the Senate. Many Democrats said they had expected Mr. Torricelli to more easily overcome his ethics troubles. Instead, his predicament has roiled the party and stirred resentment toward him among fellow Democrats. Some of them say that Mr. Torricelli's wounds are self-inflicted and that he opened himself to attack — not to mention gave ammunition to his Republican challenger, Douglas R. Forrester — by engaging in...

Insight on the News - Daily Insight Issue: 10/01/02 Torricelli's Terrorist-List Friends By Kenneth R. Timmerman Sen. Robert Torricelli (D-N.J.) is facing what could be the toughest election campaign of his life, embroiled in a series of campaign-finance scandals that Republican challenger Douglas Forrester skillfully has exploited. The real surprise in this campaign is not Torricelli's sleazy New Jersey politics or his relationship to David Chang, the businessman who has admitted in court to making illegal campaign contributions to the "Torch" [see "Taking on 'The Torch,'" Sept. 23]. It has come from revelations, first aired by the American Spectator...
