Scientology Spokesman Tommy Davis Leaves Interview in Anger The Church of Scientology is taking a beating today. First, former member Paul Haggis wrote a scathing letter renouncing the religion, and now a video of spokesman Tommy Davis walking out of an interview with Martin Bashir on 'Nightline,' is making the rounds on the Internet. Davis was offended when Bashir asked questions about the popular celebrity religion's beliefs. "Do you believe that the Galactic Emperor called Xenu brought his people to earth 75 million years ago and buried them in volcanoes?" Bashir asked. "Martin, I'm not going to discuss the disgusting...

With all the talk about phony town halls and planted questions, I was reminded about my own experience with Nightline's Ted Koppel. It was 1995 and I first heard about ABC's Nightline coming to Towson State University (Maryland) from a friend who was a psychology major. "Nightline - Teen Sex: What'll We Tell the Kids" was the title of the event and former Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders and Lou Sheldon of the Traditional Values Coalition were two of the main guests. I asked my friend how she got a ticket and she said only certain departments were handing them out...

ABC's "Nightline" stretches its #1 late night ranking to four weeks - which hasn't happened since 1995. With 3.74 million Total Viewers Nightline beat CBS' "Late Show" and NBC's "The Tonight Show." All three shows were in original productions — no re-runs. "Nightline" also squeaked by Conan in A25-54 viewers with 1,473,000, to "The Tonight Show's" 1,466,000. Last week saw the lowest Total Viewer and A25-54 averages for "The Tonight Show" since the 1991/92 season. "Nightline" was up 21% versus the same week last year and is up 14% among Total Viewers and up 3% among A25-54 viewers, season-to-date. Show...

LOL, OK, I haven't watched Nightline in years. But after waking up from a dose of sleep after a long day's work this evening, I was suddenly confronted with Nightline. Presenting the view of "many" in the media and society concerning the current presidency of Barack Obama, after the first 100 days. This "balanced" (my emphasis) survey of "well known personalities" (using Nightline's terms) of the American mindset included: Nancy Pelosi, Bill Mayer, Ali Wentworth, Paul Krugman, Arianna Huffington, Al Sharpton and Cokie Roberts with Jim Cramer, George Will, and Newt Gingrich barely sprinkled in to allow the word "balanced"...

ABC's Nightline beat CBS' Late Show with David Letterman last week in both Total Viewers and the A25-54 demo — with the late night show back in original episodes. NBC's Tonight Show with Jay Leno was #1. All three shows declined week-to-week in the demo, with only Nightline down in Total Viewers.

ABC News’ “Nightline” outperformed CBS’ “Late Show with David Letterman” among Total Viewers and the key Adults 25-54 demographic for the just-completed first quarter, according to Nielsen Media Research. This marks the first time in six years (2003) “Nightline” has outperformed “Letterman” for a first quarter. It also marks the first time in nine years “Nightline” has outperformed “Letterman” in the Adults 25-54 demo three quarters in a row. Additionally, “Nightline” delivered its best 1st quarter Total Viewers delivery in 6 years (2003). “Nightline” also beat “Letterman” among Adults 18-49.

Most debates never settle anything and are usually held so someone can be proclaimed a winner; even if they are dead wrong. In a world where popular acceptance is the new morality what might we expect? Can we eliminate the father of lies with an opinion? Let’s see. ABC’s ‘Nightline’ Face-Off: Does Satan Exist moderated by Dan Harris and aired on Thursday March 26, 2009 ignored both scriptural admonishments from Romans 1:29 and 1Corinthians 12:20 that warn against entering into debates to try to prove the faith to anyone. Christianity can only proclaim the gospel for best effect. The rest...

RUSH: There's a blog out there called mediabistro.com, TVNewser and so forth, and the TV people read it religiously. Oh, by the way, the Wall Street Journal did publish my op-ed today. We linked to it at RushLimbaugh.com or you can go to the Wall Street Journal opinion page and see it yourself. Now we know why David Letterman really wanted John McCain on his show last night. ABC just announced that Nightline beat Letterman again last week and it also topped the Late Show in Total Viewers and the A25-54 demo for the third quarter. It's the first time in nine years Nightline has outperformed CBS in the demo for the quarter. Nightline comes in second, behind the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Elizabeth Edwards authorized a friend to attack John Edwards over his "she was in remission" interview on Nightline. That's the stunning assertion of Sandra Westfall, the "People" magazine writer who authored the article [excerpt here] containing the friend's crticism. Westfall was a guest on tonight's Verdict with Dan Abrams. DAN ABRAMS: Sandra, let me start with you. Is it fair to say that the story that you guys have in this week's magazine is effectively Elizabeth Edwards' side of the story? SANDRA WESTFALL: You know, she authorized her brother and her best friend to speak to me on her behalf....

Edwards Furious ABC Broke Affair Story Before 'Nightline' Aired By Noel Sheppard Created 2008-08-10 10:32 John Edwards is apparently furious with ABC News for releasing information concerning his affair with former campaign staffer Rielle Hunter before "Nightline" aired Friday evening. In fact, it appears the reason Edwards agreed to the interview was in the hopes that Americans would be so involved in watching the Olympics his confession would go largely unnoticed. Such was reported [1] Saturday by Broadcasting & Cable (photo courtesy AP): Edwards had hoped to control the news cycle by making his admission late on a Friday night...

Nightline contacted me Tuesday looking to interview Jim about a story they were working on about the Dixie Chicks. Jim declined as is his wont and he said I could do it if I felt like it. I informed ABC of Jim's decision. They did a pre-interview with me by phone Tuesday afternoon. Yesterday they called back and scheduled the inteview for late this afternoon. They asked if I had an office they could film the interview at. I laughed and said, no, so we set it up for the ABC News D.C. bureau on DeSales St.This morning, they asked...

by Mark Finkelstein September 8, 2006 - 07:58 We're all familiar with this definition of a conservative: "a liberal who's just been mugged." This morning, Ted Koppel devised a variation on the theme that could be taken as an insult to his fellow lefties: "a liberal is a conservative who just got arrested." Koppel's line came in the course of a Today show interview with Matt Lauer to discuss a special that Koppel is about to air in his role as Managing Editor of the Discovery Channel [so that's where he went after leaving ABC!]. As Lauer described it, the...

Here is the Letter from The Federalist Society: Mr. David Westin President ABC News 7 West 66th Street New York, NY 10023 Dear Mr. Westin: I write to express my deep disappointment and concern about a January 23rd report aired on ABC's...

ABC news show is down 15 percent in 18-49s The post-Ted Koppel “Nightline” has faced questions about its viability since its debut two months ago, but those questions are hardly new. Koppel faced them for much of the time he anchored the show. What is new is a hefty decline in ratings. Will ABC continue to stand behind the late-night news show, and for how long? The question would seem to gain urgency with the network's improved primetime ratings, making a makever of the 11:30 p.m. timeslot all that more attractive. For the week ended Jan. 15, “Nightline” averaged 3.6...

In a December 23 USA Today front page story, “USO cheers troops, but Iraq gigs tough to book; Safety concerns, disagreement with war keeping many celebrities from volunteering,” reporters Martin Kasindorf and Steven Komarow related how actor/comedian Robin Williams, “who like [Al] Franken has been an outspoken critic of Bush's management of the war -- and [Wayne] Newton, a Republican who backs Bush, say some stars have turned down the USO because they thought such performances would amount to endorsing the war.” But in a Friday evening Nightline story, Terry Moran, through his use of soundbites from two left-wingers, portrayed...

Today on Rush's show he spoke about a Nightline story aired last Friday. The segment, hosted by Terry Moran, apparently charged Rush and other conservatives had stayed away from the Troops deployed in the WOT. Kathy Griffin, a self-described "D-List" comic, was quoted as saying Rush should put his money where his mouth is visit the troops. Nightline then reported that Rush and other un-identified conservatives declined to do so. Anyone passingly familiar with Rush, or access to Google.com, could have fact checked this allegation. Of course, El Rushbo had travelled to see the troops. So I emailed Kathy the...

Ted Koppel, an icon of U.S. broadcast journalism, said on Friday Arabic television news channel Al Jazeera was one of many news outlets that sought to hire him when he left ABC News in November, but he never seriously considered working there. Koppel, who recently joined cable television's Discovery Channel, said he and longtime producing partner Tom Bettag had lunch with an Al Jazeera executive, but it "didn't take long for us to decide that that's not what we were going to do."

WASHINGTON — The Arab news network Al Jazeera announced Thursday that Dave Marash, an award-winning former correspondent for ABC News' "Nightline," is joining its 24-hour English-language network, to be launched this spring. In an interview Thursday, Marash, 63, described his new position as "the most interesting job on Earth." Calling Al Jazeera "a thoroughly respectable news organization," Marash, who will co-anchor the news from the network's Washington studio, said the new show aimed to "win the high end. We want to give the most sophisticated, most nuanced and most global view of the day's events."

Former ABC News show anchor named managing editor of cable channel. NEW YORK - Ted Koppel has joined the Discovery Channel to make news documentaries, bringing his former top producer and eight other ex-"Nightline" staff members, the cable channel announced Wednesday. Koppel was named managing editor of Discovery, and his first program for the network is due next fall. The longtime ABC News anchor left "Nightline" after 25 years in November. The late-night news show he originated has continued on ABC with three new anchors.

Departing anchor asks audience to support show or network will pull itNEW YORK - As he walked out the door, Ted Koppel couldn’t resist one last dig at the network that almost dumped him three years ago. Koppel, in his final broadcast Tuesday after more than 25 years as anchor of ABC News’ “Nightline,” asked his fans to give successors Martin Bashir, Cynthia McFadden and Terry Moran a fair break when they start on Monday. “If you don’t,” he said, “I promise you the network will just put another comedy show in this time slot. Karl Rove proved a very salient point last week in his speech to the Conservative Party of New York. The media's reflexes still work. After most in the "news" media spent a week steadfastly ignoring Sen. Richard Durbin's (D-Ill.) hideous statement comparing U.S. detainees to the killing fields of Pol Pot, Rove said liberals were weak on terrorism, and zoom! Rove's remarks rocketed to the front page and with that, the top of the political buzz. The New York Times set the table by quoting only a few sentences in which Rove explained that conservatives saw Sept. 11 and knew...

Newsweek retracts story but the liberal media says it's probably true anyway and points the finger at the bullies in the administration. Newsweek has rejected the resignation of Michael Isikoff, which is probably the correct thing to do. Although the fabricated story was written by Isikoff, it was Newsweek that published the libel and it is Newsweek that is responsible for the deaths in Afghanistan. But all the big shots at Newsweek were innocent. In the case of the Koran item, Newsweek Managing Editor Whitaker said he did not see the final version because he was traveling on personal business....

When The New York Times, “Nightline,” and CNN nominate a young blonde for sainthood ahead of the Pope, it’s time for a reality check. Especially when that blonde, Marla Ruzicka’s sole purpose is to legitimize our enemies, cause problems for U.S. troops already in harms way, and morally equivocate dead terrorists with victims of 9/11. Jane Fonda lite—but unfortunately without having been spat upon by right-thinking veterans. The recent death of Ruzicka, an American “activist” in Iraq, elicited an orgy of gush—everywhere from Time Magazine to The Guardian of London to Al-Jazeera. A 28-year-old San Franciscan, Ruzicka was in Iraq...

As NewsMax first reported in early March, ABC News' Ted Koppel has become the next anchor to follow Dan Rather into the sunset. Last Thursday morning, ABC News president David Westin told employees that Ted, 65, would leave ABC in December, after 42 years at the network. Westin also stated that Koppel had refused other possible assignments within ABC and "felt now was the time to leave." Word within the network had it that Ted was poised to replace George Stephanopoulos as host of the Sunday morning news show "This Week." "This Week" has had chronic ratings problems and has...

After 25 years, ABC News' "Nightline" is about to learn whether there is life after Ted Koppel. Or is it? The much-honored late-night news program will lose the only anchor it has ever had at the end of the year. Koppel said Thursday he will end his 42-year career when his contract expires in December. ABC News President David Westin and the "Nightline" staff want the show to go on. They're confident it will. But the ultimate decision rests with top ABC executive Anne Sweeney and ABC parent The Walt Disney Co. ABC's secret courtship of David Letterman three years...

8:58 PM PST, February 6, 2005Signs That 'Nightline's' Days May Be NumberedBy Scott Collins, Times Staff Writer Three years after narrowly surviving the ax, ABC's long-running "Nightline" is in jeopardy again. Network parent Walt Disney Co. is serious enough about replacing the late-night news show — hosted by Ted Koppel since 1980 — to have ordered executives to start devising alternatives, according to sources familiar with the plans. ABC News last week shot a pilot for one possible "Nightline" replacement, a freewheeling show hosted by Washington reporter Jake Tapper and Bill Weir, the co-anchor of the weekend edition of "Good...

For the past month, AiG has anticipated the broadcast of a major U.S. news story on ABC-TV’s Nightline program after Nightline correspondent, John Donvan and ABC crew spent over six hours last month touring the AiG Creation Museum in Northern Kentucky and interviewing many of the staff. Late this afternoon, AiG received word through a Nightline broadcast email, that tonight’s subject of the Nightline program will cover the growing controversies over the teaching of evolution in public school science classes (including today’s controversial decision by a federal judge in Georgia, who ruled that disclaimer stickers about evolution must be removed...

A longtime producer of ABC's "Nightline" is leaving the show, signaling a larger shake-up at the money-losing late-night newsmagazine. Co-Executive Producer Leroy Sievers, who has been with "Nightline" since the early 1990s, is negotiating an exit package after Walt Disney Co.'s ABC indicated it would not renew his contract, according to people familiar with the situation. Mr. Sievers, a hard-news guardian of the traditional identity of the show, has run it on a daily basis since Tom Bettag, the show's other executive producer, started devoting his time to ABC's Sunday morning program "This Week" about a year ago. The departure...

Although they are not advertising it on their site it appears Nightline was with John Kerry and chronicled his rise and fall on election day. This Presidential Race Has Never Been Neck and Neck By Debbie Daniel October 27, 2004 How about defining it as being cut off at the knees . . . and then told to run? How about hands tied behind the back . . . and then expected to lead the nation? Now I know why George Bush calls on the name of Jesus. George Bush has been brought to his knees since Al Gore called him back on election night 2000 to say, "I've changed my mind, I'm not conceding the race." And from that point on . . ....

Mark Hyman of The Point does it again! He got the goods on ABC's Ted Koppel who fabricated news by selectively quoting from one Navy document and then ignoring entire passages from the same document, which discredit Koppel's attempt to back up Kerry's fake claims over his Silver Star. THE ABCs OF NIGHTLINE On Thursday, October 14th, Ted Koppel - of Koppelgate fame - aired a program that was intended to validate John Kerry's version of how he "overwhelmed a numerically superior force" when he won his Silver Star. The problem was - well, let's put it this way. If...

Hmmm? – Let me see if I have this straight ..?? Senator Kerry needs to establish that he really earned his Silver Star. The reason he needs to do that is because the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth (all 264 of them) have called into question Kerry’s character and honesty regarding not only his actions in Vietnam, and his actions after returning home, but also the false statements Kerry has made regarding his Silver Star and Purple Heart medals. Enter ABC – these are the people who will try to re-establish Kerry’s character and honesty. And, in light of Mark...

Last month, I wrote this piece about the rally held by the Vietnam Vets for Truth in Washington D.C. To me, the most moving speech at the rally was delivered by Laura Armstrong, daughter of Roger ("Black Bart") Bartholomew, a First Air Cavalry rocket artillery helicopter pilot who was killed in Vietnam on Thanksgiving Day 1968, when Laura was eight years old. Ms. Armstrong was kind enough to provide me with the text of a letter she sent to ABC Nightline regarding its attempt to enlist Viet Cong Communists against the Swiftvets. Here is what she wrote: To say that...

To say that Nightline found "the one group" who hasn't weighed in on Kerry's Vietnam service is total BS. While we've all heard ad nauseam from the 9-11 families and have heard the press talk about how Bush has offended them by using the images of 9-11, WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN OF VIETNAM, who had to endure John Kerry's legacy of lies, both then and now, during this campaign? I am one of those children, and had to endure teachers who censured me, people who told me (as a small child) "YOUR DADDY DESERVED TO DIE IN VIETNAM -- HE...

NGUYEN VAN KHOAI....In their story about John Kerry's Silver Star on Thursday, Nightline interviewed a Vietnamese man who said this wasn't the first time he'd been asked about Kerry's medals: Back in Tran Thoi, villager Nguyen Van Khoai said that about six months ago he was visited by an American who described himself as a Swift boat veteran and told him another American from the Swift boats was running for president of the United States.
