Julius Genachowski, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, plans to propose a new so-called net neutrality rule Monday that could prevent telecommunications, cable and wireless companies from blocking Internet applications, according to sources at the agency. Genachowski will discuss the rules Monday during a keynote speech at The Brookings Institute. He isn't expected to drill into many details, but the proposal will specifically be for an additional guideline on how operators like AT&T, Verizon, and Comcast can control what goes on their networks. That additional guideline would prevent the operators from discriminating, or act as gatekeepers, of Web content and...

WASHINGTON -- In her maiden Supreme Court appearance last week, Justice Sonia Sotomayor made a provocative comment that probed the foundations of corporate law. During arguments in a campaign-finance case, the court's majority conservatives seemed persuaded that corporations have broad First Amendment rights and that recent precedents upholding limits on corporate political spending should be overruled. But Justice Sotomayor suggested the majority might have it all wrong -- and that instead the court should reconsider the 19th century rulings that first afforded corporations the same rights flesh-and-blood people have. Judges "created corporations as persons, gave birth to corporations as persons,"...

Doctor opposition to health care overhaul proposals is broad and deep, revealing concerns not just about soaring costs, declining care, possible rationing and a lack of limits on malpractice suits, but also about government competence and motives, detailed responses to a new IBD/TIPP Poll show. As reported Wednesday, 65% of the 1,376 practicing physicians who responded to a mailed questionnaire over the last two weeks said they opposed health care plans that have emerged from the administration and Congress. Just 33% supported them. Perhaps the most shocking result: 45% of these professionals said they would consider closing their practices or...

The liberals were crazy angry while George W. Bush was president. Part of it was that for a time after 9/11, they were made completely irrelevant — when people are dying, who is going to listen to a liberal? But another part of it is that it’s much easier to hate a person than to hate a concept — like conservatism. So they were able to channel all their hate into President Bush. And they were jumping-around-pooh-flinging-biting-each-other angry. I think a number of conservatives were secretly looking forward to the Obama presidency in hopes that liberals might just calm down...

Fox and Friends, With reference to your 7:00 AM (central time) segment of “etiquette” in which you lumped Joe Wilson’s behavior which was motivated by patriotic zeal and principle and provoked by an obvious “falsehood” by Obama with the Kanye West’s rude and insensitive behavior and Serena Williams display of vulgar and hateful antics which were both prompted by nothing less then glaring selfishness was ludicrous and absurd. Surely you must realize considering “motive” is very important in accurately judging ones actions? I suppose the “million” plus ant-government-spending protesters of last Saturday would be considered without “etiquette” also? Question: Why...

The news media's credibility is sagging along with its revenue. Nearly two-thirds of Americans think the news stories they read, hear and watch are frequently inaccurate, according to a poll released Sunday by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press. That marks the highest level of skepticism recorded since 1985, when this study of public perceptions of the media was first done. The poll didn't distinguish between Internet bloggers and reporters employed by newspapers and broadcasters, leaving the definition of "news media" up to each individual who was questioned. The survey polled 1,506 adults on the phone...

WASHINGTON, Sept. 8, 2009 – Defense Department officials have launched “AFPS News,” a weekly audio podcast of stories from American Forces Press Service. “American Forces Press Service news and feature articles are a vital source of information to troops, their family members and the American public,” said Linda Kozaryn, director of eProducts for the Defense Media Activity. “The podcasts give AFPS another outlet for our stories, which traditionally have been available only in print and on the Web,” she said. “We are excited to reach a broadcast audience via this new media tool.” AFPS, formerly a feature-article service mailed to...

Van Jones's resignation has the left wringing their hands, infuriated that Glenn Beck and few righties managed to get one of their own booted out of office. So, what's the best way to strike back? By dredging up dirt and slinging mud. At least that's the opinon of Keith Olbermann, who told his followers to "Find everything you can about Glenn Beck, Stu Burguiere, and Roger Ailes." Olbermann was moved in part by the Van Jones resignation, and in part from this tweet from Glenn Beck's Twitter feed, "FIND EVERYTHING YOU CAN ON CASS SUNSTEIN, MARK LLOYD AND CAROL BROWNER.”...

Most of the major news outlets, like The New York Times and The Washington Post, ignored the swelling heat surrounding former White House environmental adviser Van Jones and the videos surfacing of his controversial statements. CBS News became the first of the three broadcast networks on Friday to note the controversy, but ABC's "World News" and "NBC Nightly News" again failed to report the story. After Jones' midnight resignation over the weekend, all three networks aired the story on their Sunday evening newscasts. The Washington Post offered its first story on Saturday yet The New York Times' print edition didn't...

Someone asked me about five days ago if I was planning to write anything about Obama’s green jobs adviser Van Jones. My other responsibilities and issues with our “enhanced” Web host was the primary reason why I was not writing, but I also figured he’d be gone by Labor Day. Bye, bye.Van Jones “resigned” – yeah, right – in the middle of the night at almost the middle of our three day weekend.

Our Organizer-in-Chief will address students across America come September 8. In preparation for that teaching moment, Teaching Ambassador Fellows at the Department of Education have prepared a Menu of Classroom Activities to prepare the kiddies. Here are a few of the leading questions: Why is it important that we listen to the President and other elected officials ...? Why is what they say important? What is the President trying to tell me? What is the President asking me to do?

We’re just loving the service Glenn Beck is providing to America on his Fox News television program, using his crack team of investigators to uncover intriguing and potentially explosive information about key players in our federal government, particularly in the executive branch, whose presence may threaten American sovereignty and security. This past week, Mr. Beck focused on Mr. Obama’s unelected, unvetted, unaccountable czars who have been given the use of gargantuan budgets funded by the use of our personal, hard-earned money (without our permission, of course). Since some of the czars have served prison terms or are self-proclaimed Communists (and...

But of course it is. One sure way to determine the state of the Obama Aministration’s policies is by the thickness of it’s political skin. Fun to watch because Gibbs gets sooooooo irritated. At today’s WHPB CBS reporter Chip Reid I believe, asked Robert Gibbs to explain why things seem to be getting worse since the President announced his new strategy (increased troop levels, unmanned drones in Pakistan, and taking the fight to the poppy farmers as well as AQ) for Afghanistan. Gibbs response grew testiier by the minute … but it didn’t take long to blame the whole thing...

Excuse me, but weren't we just talking about health care? After scanning news this week, one might notice a startling dearth of health care stories making headlines. Surprisingly, for most media outlets--be they liberal, conservative, a major news network or a basement blog--stories regarding public options, death panels, Obama's waning support, insurance companies, and the like were nowhere to be found. Their absence might make the average news junkie feel like he's entered a non-parallel universe. But please don't be alarmed: it is entirely calculated. Simply put, it's not that health care is no longer newsworthy; it's just that Barack...

Slate is retiring “Today’s Papers,” one of the original aggregators of the Web, 12 years after it started its beloved once-a-day summary of the nation’s news pages. In its place comes a new recap of the news, one that acknowledges that the news cycle has, well, sped up quite considerably since “Today’s Papers” started in 1997. That is why the “Slatest,” the name of the new feature that comes online Monday morning, will collect the world’s news three times a day. David Plotz, editor of the online magazine Slate, very superlatively calls it a “very fast, very intelligent, very witty...

NORTH ROSE – A Wolcott fruit grower is accusing the U.S. Border Patrol of racially profiling four of his workers who were stopped on Route 414 Aug. 17 as they were returning to his farm from a trip to purchase clothing. The men were all detained and taken for processing; Border Patrol Officer E. Rodriguez, who was in charge of the scene, told fruit grower Brian Doyle the men volunteered they were in the U.S. illegally. Doyle said Rodriguez then accused him of being a “federal criminal” because he employed the men. He said Rodriguez continually referred to the men...

The California legislature passed AB 400, its transparency legislation today that requires state expenditures over $5,000 to be posted online with contextual information detailing the purpose of the expense, allowing taxpayers to see how their money is being spent by the state. While Gov. Schwarzenegger had signed an executive order that required all contracts over $5,000 to be posted on his website earlier this year, this (once the governor signs the bill) would be the first time transparency has been codified into law in the Golden State – and it’s a long-overdue step for a state that has been plagued...

MOSCOW – Divers scoured the near-freezing waters flooding the cavernous rooms of Russia's largest hydroelectric plant on Tuesday but the owner said it was doubtful that any of the 64 workers missing after an accident would be found alive. The accident Monday, which drowned or crushed to death 12 other workers, shut down the massive Sayano-Shushenskaya power plant in southern Siberia and left several towns and major factories without electricity. The plant provides 10 percent of Siberia's energy needs, according to Russian media reports. Two workers were found alive Monday in niches inside the flooded structure, RusHydro acting chief Vasily...

Monday, August 17, 2009 The Salem Town Hall Meeting with Kurt Schrader Your intrepid reporter was there! Although I fell asleep half way through as Mr. Schrader is rather long winded and boring as heck. I didn't know they still existed. The evidence is the bus pictured above. Oh, and a large group of Illegal Immigrants holding signs for "immigration reform". They were the only ones to applaud when...

CNN) -- The biggest political story of the month so far is clearly the populist rage on display at town halls across the country. Democrats say this rage is manufactured; Republicans say it is real. What can't be debated is that it is drawing a lot of attention, perhaps none more so than the town hall that Sen. Arlen Specter held in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday of this past week. I know something about that part of the state. I used to work for Bob Walker, who represented that area for 20 years in the House of Representatives. In 1988,...

HARRISON, N.Y. -- The live-in nanny is the first downstairs. She packs the school lunches at a kitchen window, overlooking three acres of velvety grass and little streams that slope toward a gate with a sign that says "Birch Hill." Upstairs, three children begin to stir. In the midst of cheese omelets and Honey Bunches of Oats and vitamins placed next to folded napkins, the lady of the house descends. "Morning," says Laura Steins, 47, wearing a dark Armani suit and take-charge heels. Her blue eyes are lustrous and her skin is golden, and even with wet hair and no...

The US Patriot Act was used AGAIN to incarcerate the juvenile & model citizen for months without being charged with a crime! Any lingering doubts about the political leanings of MSNBC’s Chris Matthews were forever erased when the commentator launched a verbal assault on New Hampshire resident William Kostric, who had protested outside a “town hall meeting” in Portsmouth Tuesday while openly carrying a pistol. CBS blogger Declan McCullagh writes about it here. This meeting was attended by President Barack Obama, it was a canned event with evidently only Obama supporters in...

The 'Creative' Technology Behind The AP's News Registry from the magic-beans dept The Associated Press' attempt to DRM the news is a bad idea for a variety of reasons, but its claims for the news registry's capabilities seem pretty misguided, once you examine the technology behind it (the "magic DRM beans"). Ed Felten dug into the details of the registry's microformat, hNews, which the AP announced a few weeks earlier, and here's where it gets really interesting: the hNews rights field is based on the Creative Commons Rights Expression Language (ccREL). If the AP thinks it'll be able to build...

Barack Obama is a liar. Make no mistake about it, the usurper to the Oval Office out and out lied to the American people regarding his plan to nationalize health care. In the first place, he claims his plan is not to actually take over the health care system and make it a government run program. But he was contradicted on this by Nancy Pelosi and Barney Frank, both of whom claim there are forces afoot trying to stop "government run health care." Obama also lied when he said that the Democrat's plan would allow anyone who is currently satisfied...
