To the delight of its families, Hamilton Elementary has replaced homework for kindergartners, first-graders and second-graders this year with PDF — play, downtime and family time — along with lots of reading for fun. Only a few days into the new year, life is already better, mother Sarah Rothberger said. Not only is there more time for family dinners every night, but evenings now are for playing UNO and Othello, and reading chapters from Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “By The Banks of Plum Creek.” Beyond that, he wondered, why should school dictate what families do, given that families can’t control what...

A group of 11 sick, disabled and elderly Iraqi Christians — including an 80-year-old woman with breast cancer — defied terrorists who ordered them to convert to Islam or be beheaded, saying they preferred death to giving up their faith. The united resistance prompted the Islamic State extremists (formerly ISIS) to drop their demands and order the Christians to immediately leave their village of Karamless after first robbing them of their possessions, according to one of the survivors. Sahar Mansour, a refugee from Mosul, told Catholic News Service in an email that the group turned up at Ankawa refugee camp,...

[... ] It appears the agency did push back. On May 2, 2012, he emailed the CIA a new opening to the story with a subject line that asked, “does this look better?”

It was Andrew Norfolk, The Times of London’s chief investigative reporter, whose initial report on predatory Asian men in Rotherham led to a full inquiry into the town’s dark sexual deviancy. “I didn’t want the story to be true because it made me deeply uncomfortable,” he wrote this week. “The suggestion that men from a minority ethnic background were committing sex crimes against white children was always going to be the far right’s fantasy story come true. Innocent white victims, evil dark-skinned abusers. Liberal angst kicked instinctively into top gear.” If that angst was rife then, it hasn’t ebbed since....

Islamist militias in Libya took control of nearly a dozen commercial jetliners last month, and western intelligence agencies recently issued a warning that the jets could be used in terrorist attacks across North Africa. Intelligence reports of the stolen jetliners were distributed within the U.S. government over the past two weeks and included a warning that one or more of the aircraft could be used in an attack later this month on the date marking the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks against New York and Washington, said U.S. officials familiar with the reports. “There are a number...

A recent “fact check” from the Michigan Truth Squad, a project of the Center for Michigan, takes a look at an ad from Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mark Schauer attacking Gov. Rick Snyder. In its analysis of K-12 state funding, the truth-checkers state, “In his first year in office, Snyder approved a budget that resulted in school funding $930 million lower than the previous year.” For the Record: The Truth Squad cites a Senate Fiscal Agency report, but they do not include $455.5 million in additional state funding used for “best practices” and retiree benefit costs. That amount is listed in...

A busy week in news was a good one for Fox News Channel, which logged its second highest-rated frame of the year, but a weak one for MSNBC, which found itself deep in third place. FNC, with several shows hitting 2014 highs, won in adults 25-54 and total viewers on both a primetime and total-day basis for Monday through Friday of last week. More and more we're hearing about various members of the media ceasing to use the name "Redskins." In perhaps the biggest deal yet, the Washington Post announced Friday the editorial board would cease using the team's nickname. "While we wait for the NFL to catch up with public opinion and common decency we have decided not to use the slur ourselves except when it is essential for clarity or effect," said a statement on the paper's own site. Worth noting: this doesn't affect the actual paper. The news-gathering side of the business can -- and will as we understand it...

Brain boxes had better brace themselves, because the latest bit of bad news is that the world is becoming a dumber place. IQs have not only plateaued in many developed countries around the world – including the UK, Australia, US and in Scandinavian countries – they are actually measurably dropping. It’s an important enough development for it to be the cover story of this week’s New Scientist magazine, which hits newsstands today. Throughout the 20th century, we were getting smarter and smarter – each generation brainier than the last. Scientists were not sure why but, at the rate we were...

In what could be a decisive blow to the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) mega trend, the California Court of Appeal ruled late last week that companies must reimburse employees for work-related use of personal cellphones, as described in the National Law Review. Specifically, the Court of Appeal in Cochran v. Schwan's Home Service stated: "We hold that when employees must use their personal cellphones for work-related calls, Labor Code section 2802 requires the employer to reimburse them. Whether the employees have cellphone plans with unlimited minutes or limited minutes, the reimbursement owed is a reasonable percentage of their cellphone...
