RALEIGH, N.C. — A man who gave a fiery speech for gun rights two years ago in Greensboro won the Republican primary in North Carolina’s lieutenant governor’s race Tuesday night. Mark Robinson, who was seeking his first elected office, topped eight other candidates, likely winning the primary without a runoff and shocking pundits. He spent less than other candidates – one a state senator who put half a million dollars into his own campaign – and he didn’t have the statewide platform or political experience of others. “We’re not pretentious. I’m not spreading a political message. I’m spreading a message...
  • ‘Rural values’ can tilt voters Republican – even for some minorities

Why we wrote this——Democrats might assume that a minority people in North Carolina’s poorest county would vote with them. But as one observer puts it, “This is not about Native American identity. This is about rural Indian values.” Pembroke, N.C. — The Lumbee Indians of Robeson County about broke Dan McCready’s heart. The former Marine and clean-energy investor spent 27 months wooing the Lumbee Tribe in rural North Carolina, in a bid to turn the state’s 9th Congressional District Democratic for the first time since 1963. They were so close. Mr. McCready’s Carolina-blue signs were all over the suburbs of...

In the swing state of North Carolina, it was happy-dance time for the beleaguered Republicans. Two hotly contested congressional races both went solidly into the GOP camp, helping the Republicans in the crazies-run House. State senator Dan Bishop won in the 9th District, and Greg Murphy won in the 3rd District, and both will now get the opportunity to tell Reps. Ilhan Omar and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez that they are out to lunch. It was a conservative blowout. Five things stick out about it now. First, straightforward conservatism, President Trump's stellar economy, and not being crazy all count for something. Dan...

Tuesday was the night North Carolina’s ninth congressional district would finally decide who would represent them in the House. A consultant for the 2018 GOP candidate marked incomplete absentee ballots for his candidate, causing the results to be thrown out. Despite a new GOPer running, the CBS Evening News took that bad actor and used him to smear all Republicans and suggested the true question the election would answer was whether the GOP could win without cheating. After failing news anchor Norah O’Donnell pitched the race as a “possible preview for 2020,” correspondent Dean Reynolds began the report by declaring:...

Full title: Trump jubilant in tweet blitz over NC victories, calls it ‘big night’ for Republicans President Donald Trump launched a tweet blitz overnight Wednesday to celebrate party victories in two North Carolina races for U.S. Congress, calling it a “big night for the Republican party.” Republican Dan Bishop won a tight District 9 race and Republican Greg Murphy was victorious by a wide margin in the state’s 3rd Congressional District, the Charlotte Observer reported Wednesday. Trump visited North Carolina this week to stump for Bishop, and seemed to take particular pride in defeating Democrat Dan McCready. “Dan Bishop was...

President Trump's 2020 campaign has shifted the location for a rally in North Carolina on Monday from the Fayettesville Regional Airport to the city's Crown Expo Center. Campaign spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany announced the change on Twitter on Friday, as North Carolina was being battered by Hurricane Dorian. A Trump campaign official told The Hill that logistical problems with flight times at the Fayettesville hangar had prompted the change. The "Keep America Great" rally will take place a day before a special House election, and the Republican candidate, state Sen. Dan Bishop, will be joining Trump on stage.

President Donald Trump will head to Greenville, North Carolina, for a campaign rally on Wednesday, returning to the purple state that he won by a narrow 3% over Hillary Clinton, according to CNN’s 2016 election results. It will be Trump’s first rally since he officially kicked off his reelection campaign last month in Orlando, Florida, where he delivered a wide-ranging, lengthy speech echoing many similar themes and grievances of his 2016 campaign, including attacks on Clinton. The trip to Greenville was initially expected to coincide with special counsel Robert Mueller’s long-awaited testimony before the House Judiciary and House Intelligence Committees....

A major super PAC aligned with POTUS Donald Trump has identified six key states the president will need in order to secure his reelection next year. According to America First Action, those states are Ohio, Georgia, North Carolina, Florida, Pennsylvania and Michigan, The Daily Caller reported. No doubt whatever crazy the Democrats nominate, that candidate will win the deep blue enclaves of California and New York, and may even be able to pull off a majority of votes again (though that is looking less and less likely).

Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke of Texas swung through North Carolina on Monday opening with greetings of “buenos dias” to nearly 100 students and others in Charlotte. Newly minted Democrat State Senator Mujtaba Mohammed, elected in 2018, launched the Central Piedmont Community College event around 9 a.m. It was the first of three 2020 campaign events for O’Rourke in North Carolina on Monday. O’Rourke’s opening remark on gerrymandering elicited cheers from the crowd. He threw in mention of LGBT issues, voter suppression, and a new voting rights act.
  • 2020 Republican convention goes to Charlotte, the lonely and reluctant bidder in age of Trump

As Americans fought in recent weeks over whether restaurants should refuse to serve top aides to President Trump, an entire city has been debating what it means to host his convention for reelection. Charlotte won the rights to the 2020 Republican National Convention on Friday. But that's largely because it faced little serious competition. And even before the victory was announced in Austin, Texas, this thriving, progressive urban island in the Trump-friendly South was suffering some buyer's remorse. Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles, a Democrat, says the decision to host the convention was the hardest she has tackled — "not just...
