CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Customers at the Liberty Street Carryout don't sing for their supper. They sing for their country. Every day at noon, customers join waitress Judy Hawkins in a sing-along with a local radio station's broadcast of "The Star-Spangled Banner." Hawkins said she started singing the national anthem several months ago and it's now a daily ritual. "We just think it's good to honor ("The Star-Spangled Banner"). The public enjoys it. They stop eating and join in," she said. Hawkins said she and her co-workers like to have fun, but singing the national anthem is no joke. "We...

I have a sad story to be told about our National Anthem to the Americans who don’t know it. The short version of the story is I was a Prisoner of War with the Chinese in Korea for two and a half years. During the war, from 4/23/51 to 8/16/53, while I was a prisoner, we were required to learn and sing the Chinese National Anthem at every gathering (lectures, formations, classes, and every meal). I went in the army in 1950 not knowing my National Anthem, and I came out of the Army and POW camp knowing the Chinese...

Oh the horror! The absolute HORROR! Come with me and watch this tale of woe as a poor widdle DUmmie had his sacred virginal ears exposed to the (GASP!) national anthem. You can read all about this violation of his human rights in this DUmmie THREAD. So, DUmmie, can we NOW question your patriotism? Let us now watch the DUmmie writh in agony at this exposure to the national anthem in Bolshevik Red while the commentary of your humble correspondent, never before realizing what a fascist Francis Scott Key was, is in the [brackets]: Was at the car place...

The most patriotic moments at Yankee Stadium can also be the most confining. Seconds before “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America” are played, police officers, security guards and ushers turn their backs to the American flag in center field, stare at fans moving through the stands and ask them to stop. Across the stadium’s lower section, ushers stand every 20 feet to block the main aisle with chains. The national anthem has long been a pregame staple at sporting events. But after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Major League Baseball directed teams to play “God Bless America” before...

From September 11, 2001 attack memorials and servicesIn the UK, in a break with the long-standing usual procedures at Buckingham Palace, the Queen ordered the Changing of the Guard to be paused for a two minute silence on September 13, followed by the playing of the American national anthem (On June 4, 2002, to mark the Golden Jubilee celebrations for the Queen, New York City lit the Empire State Building in purple and gold, thanking the queen for having the American national anthem played).

Attorney: Marines involved in alleged attack on Yale singers Jaxon Van Derbeken, -- As many as three U.S. Marines were involved in the alleged New Year's attack on the Baker's Dozen singing group, an attorney for two singers is claiming in a letter that asks for the head of the Marine Corps' help in the investigation. The case - which sparked outrage on both coasts - began with a dispute at a Richmond District party and ended with members of the singing group telling police they were kicked and beaten. In a Feb. 9 letter to Lt. General Robert R....

I hope it is OK to do a vanity for this. I came across this performance, one of the best renditions I have heard. It is from the 1991 National Hockey League All-Star Game in Chicago; that aside, it is a remarkable performance. The screen can be made larger.

People were struck by the fact Bob Seger sang "America the Beautiful" and not "The Star-Spangled Banner" before Game 1. There was no controversy, though, and Anita Baker delivered the traditional national anthem at Comerica Park last night before Game 2. Out in Las Vegas, Jose Feliciano paid close attention. "I heard Bob Seger sing 'America the Beautiful' before the first game, and I thought of Ray Charles and how great his version was," Feliciano said. "His was the best."

The Liberty Bell tolls for America on election day ... are we listening? Kevin Fobbs September 29, 2006 America may not only be losing its identity it may very well be losing its most defining quality: our American liberty unless pro-American candidates are elected on November 7th. With the mid-term general election season upon us a crucial question we must ask ourselves as we enter the polling place is whether or not the gubernatorial, congressional, and state senate or representative candidates will be voting for our American liberty or for the liberty of illegal aliens who are carefully disassembling our...

The Star Spangled Banner Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep, Where the foe's haughty host...

As a Marine, the National Anthem means something more than the game is about to start. As a former Drill Instructor, it's almost habitual for me to look for those not rendering the proper honor. Caleb Brock caught my eye. Scratching his head, blowing bubbles and moving around. At the conclusion of the song, I managed to give...

Do you want to embarass a Japanese? Ask him to sing Japan's national anthem. It is indeed a real sleeper. It is old - no problem with that - but it is also outdated. Its title is Kimigayo. The words can be translated something like - "May you reign for a 1000 happy years Rule on lord/friend/lover till the pebbles by age grow and unite to great rocks with moss all over its strong sides." Doesn't that give you goose bumps? Problem is - it became somewhat of a nationalistic and militaristic anthem, and the lord came to represent the...

ALBEMARLE - "American Idol" finalist Kellie Pickler got a hometown welcome Saturday, one full of tearful twists and an anthem to independence. Pickler rode in a red 1968 Ford Mustang during a 20-minute parade, followed by speeches on a stage erected in the town center where thousands wore pink, purple, green and yellow Pickler T-shirts. "It looks like a bag of Skittles poured on Albemarle," said Pickler, 19. "I couldn't have come from a better hometown." Sharing the stage were her two grandfathers, Clyde Pickler and Ken Morton. Also there were her father, Clyde "Bo" Pickler Jr., and her half-brother,...

Jose, can you see in all that glare? By Wesley Pruden THE WASHINGTON TIMES Published May 5, 2006 Jose, can you see? But seeing is not the same as singing, as anyone who has reached for the high notes of the "Star Spangled Banner" could tell you. The old tale that Francis Scott Key stole the music from a Welsh drinking song is obviously rot. Not even a Welshman could reach notes that high after a night at the pub. The original, "To Anacreon in Heav'n," actually has a fancy intellectual pedigree. The world's most unsingable national anthem has been...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House on Thursday disputed an account of President George W. Bush singing the U.S. national anthem in Spanish during the 2000 presidential campaign, saying his Spanish is not that good.
-
A Spanish-language version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" has stirred predictable, if somewhat misdirected, opposition that should focus more on keeping things in perspective. The major concern here isn't that the national anthem is sung in another language as long as the rendition stays true to its meaning and symbolism. But when the lyrics are changed to further political or social agendas, that's overstepping. The Associated Press reported earlier that British music producer Adam Kidron says that when he came up with the idea of a Spanish-language version of the national anthem — which features artists such as Wyclef Jean, hip-hop...

Congressman backs bill that mandates language for patriotic readings; opponents decry blatant politicsWASHINGTON -- Stung by a recording of "The Star-Spangled Banner" in Spanish, Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) has jumped on a bandwagon to insist that the national anthem, the Pledge of Allegiance and the new citizens' oath should be sung and said in English. King said yesterday he had signed on as an original cosponsor of a House resolution by Rep. Jim Ryun (R-Kan.) calling for the patois of patriotism to be English only. King sponsored a bill in November to make English the nation's official language. That bill...

Bush sang Star Spangled Banner en español during 2000 campaign Wed May 03 2006 09:35:20 ET "When visiting cities like Chicago, Milwaukee, or Philadelphia, in pivotal states, George W. Bush he would drop in at Hispanic festivals and parties, sometimes joining in singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” in Spanish, sometimes partying with a “Viva Bush” mariachi band flown in from Texas." So writes author Kevin Phillips in his book AMERICAN DYNASTY. Last week, at the height of the illegal immigrant's boycott build up, Bush told reporters: "I think the national anthem ought to be sung in English."

After "Nuestro Himno," the Spanish-language version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" was released last week, President George W. Bush said, "I think the national anthem ought to be sung in English, and I think people who want to be a citizen of this country ought to learn English, and they ought to learn to sing the national anthem in English." A new Gallup poll, conducted April 28-30, and released today, finds that nearly 7 in 10 Americans, 69%, say it is only appropriate to sing the national anthem in English, while 29% say it is appropriate for people to sing the...

President Bush wants people to sing the national anthem in English only. Promoters of singing it in Spanish are pointing to comments by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice - and her department's Web site - as ammunition for their side of the argument. There are four Spanish versions on USINFO.State.gov, a multi-language Web site "I've heard the national anthem done in rap versions, country versions, classical versions," Rice said Sunday on CBS's "Face the Nation." "The individualization of the American national anthem is quite under way." The State Department site for some time has offered translations of the U.S. Constitution,...

Think of the "American Idol" TV show done entirely in Spanish. That's about the level of the ersatz "Star-Spangled Banner" recently performed by some well-known Latin pop stars and timed to coincide with the current controversy about illegal immigration and the media-grabbing demonstrations being staged around the country. A treacly setting of our national anthem, in a non-literal translation of Francis Scott Key's lyrics called "Our Hymn," it's performed as if it were a romantic ballad. With different voices sharing the four-bar lines, punctuated by melismatic vocal counterpoint, the singers are accompanied by a lush string orchestration, Spanish guitars, castanets...

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, in a rare public break with her boss, saw no problem with a Spanish-language version of the national anthem criticised by US President George W. Bush. Mr Bush last week added a new dimension to a debate over immigration by rejecting a Latino recording of Nuestro Himno (Our Anthem) and declaring the Star-Spangled Banner should be sung in English. But Dr Rice, one of the president's closest aides who has backed him down the line on every issue from Iraq to national security wiretaps, took a different tack on the anthem. "From my point...

The original star-spangled banner - the mammoth U.S. flag that flew over Baltimore's Fort McHenry - survived 25 hours of fierce British bombardment on Sept. 13-14, 1814. No doubt the national anthem which that event inspired will survive the latest assault on its standing. ........a Spanish-language version featuring pop singers and rappers..... But another remix is due out soon - a decidedly uglier version. It contains several lines in English that bitterly condemn U.S. immigration laws........lo and behold, the supposed ode to immigrants turns out to be little more than a propaganda anthem in the battle to legalize illegal immigrants....

A Spanish version of the Star-Spangled Banner Video Posted 4/25/06 NEW YORK - Latino Pop Stars are recording a Spanish-language version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" to show their support for migrant workers in the U.S. The Latino-oriented record label Urban Box Office says it plans to release the recording to coincide with the Senate's debate on immigration legislation next week. The label says "Nuestro Himno," or "Our Anthem," is set to "rhythmic Latin musical arrangement"...

Bush Says Anthem Should Be in English By JEANNINE AVERSA, AP Economics Writer 20 minutes ago WASHINGTON - The national anthem should be sung in English — not Spanish — President Bush declared Friday, amid growing restlessness over whether to grant legal status to immigrants who are in the United States illegally. "One of the important things here is that we not lose our national soul," the president exclaimed. A Spanish language version of the national anthem was released Friday by a British music producer, Adam Kidron, who said he wanted to honor America's immigrants. When the president was asked...

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush said Friday the national anthem should be sung in English - not Spanish - in a blunt rejection of a new Spanish-language version. He also expressed opposition to a national work stoppage called for Monday to dramatize the importance of immigrants to the U.S. economy. ``I'm not a supporter of boycotts,'' Bush said, while restating his support for a comprehensive overhaul of immigration laws. Bush made his comments at a Rose Garden news conference as a Spanish-language version of ``The Star-Spangled Banner,'' hit the airways featuring artists such as Wyclef Jean, hip-hop star Pitbull and...

Spanish-language pop stars and artist-producer Wyclef Jean jumped into the immigration debate this week after recording their own bilingual version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" as a show of support for illegal immigrants in light of possible immigration changes in Congress. The song, to be released to radio stations this afternoon and played Friday, has angered opponents of illegal immigration and some immigration advocates, who believe it is unpatriotic, divisive and ultimately damaging to their cause. Others think the bilingual version will allow Hispanic immigrants who don't speak English to take ownership of the national anthem after better understanding the country's...

The National Anthem of the United States of American was written in English and has been sung in English, until now. Coming as illegal immigrants from Mexico prepare to stage a mass walkout on Monday, May 1 the Spanish version is called “Nuestro Himno”. The scheduled walkout is intended to show America’s dependence on illegal immigrants by a forced economic impact created by the absence of a large segment of the workforce. They are, for the lack of a better word, striking for equal rights. The problem is that they have entered the country illegally and are literally about to...

Can "The Star-Spangled Banner," and the republic for which it stands, survive? Outrage over what's being called "The Illegal Alien Anthem" is already building in the blogosphere and among conservative commentators. Timed to debut the week Congress returned to debate immigration reform, with the country riven by the issue, "Nuestro Himno" is intended to be an anthem of solidarity for the movement that has drawn hundreds of thousands of people to march peacefully for immigrant rights in Washington and cities across the country, says Adam Kidron, president of Urban Box Office, the New York-based entertainment company that launched the project....

NEW YORK (AP) — Mexican pop diva Gloria Trevi, Puerto Rican reggaeton star Don Omar and other Latino artists have recorded a bilingual version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" in a show of support for migrants in the United States. The Latino-oriented record label Urban Box Office (UBO) said Friday it will put the new Spanish-English version of the U.S. national anthem on the market Monday to coincide with the U.S. Senate's restarting debate on immigration legislation. ...Given its circumscribed ceremonial function, and the general shortage of non-sports public gatherings these days, "The Star-Spangled Banner" doesn't get around the way it used to.... A recent Harris poll found that nearly two-thirds of Americans don't even know the words..... The enthusiasm of new Americans for the national anthem only underscores the indifference and ignorance of the rest of us. This gap between what the anthem could be and what it is has prompted the National Association for Music Education, a teachers' group, to create The National Anthem Project to try to reinvigorate "The Star-Spangled Banner." There is, however,...

President Herbert Hoover signs a congressional act making "The Star-Spangled Banner" the official national anthem of the United States. On September 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key composed the lyrics to "The Star-Spangled Banner" after witnessing the massive overnight British bombardment of Fort McHenry in Maryland during the War of 1812. Key, an American lawyer, watched the siege while under detainment on a British ship and penned the famous words after observing with awe that Fort McHenry's flag survived the 1,800-bomb assault. After circulating as a handbill, the patriotic lyrics were published in a Baltimore newspaper on September 20, 1814. Key's words...

There’s probably no single piece of writing in this country that’s as controversial or as likely to lead to fist fights as the U.S. Constitution. It’s difficult to decide which portion of the document gets people riled up the most. At times, it almost seems to change on a daily basis. On Monday, it could be gun ownership, with morons like Michael Moore frothing at the mouth at the mere thought that a law-abiding citizen might own a weapon. You have to believe folks like Moore are planning to burgle your home the way they fret over the possibility you...

Imagine you are at a sporting event, community gathering or political rally where the national anthem is being performed and you notice that most of the people in attendance aren’t singing. Why not? Could it be those few obscure notes that most of us couldn’t reach on our best day? Nope! Chances are people aren’t singing because they don’t even know the words. A recent survey reveals that two-thirds of American adults don’t even know the words to the Star-Spangled Banner; the world’s most recognizable national anthem. Well, despite the fact that patriotism is no longer considered politically correct...
