The state that includes Mumbai, India’s financial capital, this week became the first in the country to ban the possession and sale of beef, imposing fines and up to five years in prison for violations. The ban in the populous western state of Maharashtra, which was passed this week, came as an amendment to a 1972 law prohibiting the slaughter of cows, which has been expanded to ban the slaughter of bulls, bullocks and calves. The slaughter of water buffaloes will still be allowed, subject to permission from the authorities.

n the fall of 2008, a 30-year-old computer expert named Zarrar Shah roamed from outposts in the northern mountains of Pakistan to safe houses near the Arabian Sea, plotting mayhem in Mumbai, India’s commercial gem. Mr. Shah, the technology chief of Lashkar-e-Taiba, the Pakistani terror group, and fellow conspirators used Google Earth to show militants the routes to their targets in the city. He set up an Internet phone system to disguise his location by routing his calls through New Jersey. Shortly before an assault that would kill 166 people, including six Americans, Mr. Shah searched online for a Jewish...

The ward boy fractures his arm, while his colleague sustains serious injuries, including a punctured urinary bladder and severe internal bleeding. Two employees of the Tata Memorial Hospital's treatment and research centre in Khargar in Navi Mumbai suffered grievous injuries on Saturday evening when one of them walked into the centre's MRI room holding an oxygen cylinder, activating the machine's monstrous magnetic field. The two employees - one a technician and the other a ward boy - were pulled to the machine like a toy magnet pulls a pin and remained stuck to it for nearly four hours before an...

Court grants woman divorce for forcing her to wear sariObjecting to wife wearing kurta and jeans and forcing her to wear sari amounts to cruelty inflicted by husband and can be a ground to seek divorce, a family court here has ruled. The wife pleaded that after marriage in December 2010, her husband did not buy her any clothes and therefore she had purchased kurta and jeans from her salary. However, the husband did not allow her to wear them, saying she should wear only saris. In her order was passed on June 24, Principal Judge of Family Court, Dr...

Editor’s Note: Kshama Sawant is a Seattle councilwoman. And a Socialist. She was elected last fall on a $15-an-hour minimum wage platform. That wage, which is 62 percent higher than this year’s inflation indexed state minimum wage of $9.32, already the highest in the nation, comes from what researchers at the University of Washington have calculated as the wage it takes to be self-sufficient in the area. The Seattle suburb of SeaTac, home of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, narrowly approved a $15 minimum wage ballot initiative last fall, but as we recently explored, most airport workers have yet to see a...

The plot highlights how al Qaeda and Shabaab seek to strike civilian targets outside Somalia, and foreshadowed Shabaab's attack on the Eastgate Mall in Kenya this week. -------------------------------------------------------------------snip--------------------------------------- Fazul said that the "first target" in London would be "Jewish communities with tens of thousands of Jews crammed in a small area" in the Golders Green and Stamford Hill neighborhoods of the city. How dare you say that Pakistan supports terrorism? Pakistan is our partner in combating violent extremism. Just ask the head of their anti-terrorism force, who used to bring Osama bin Laden his morning coffee. And here Pakistan is providing money to terrorists. Would they do that if they supported terrorists? Pakistan has just allocated over $4,000,000 for a Center, a “Knowledge Park” and other initiatives for the Islamist parent body of the banned terrorist group that attacked Mumbai, India, in 2008. The Pakistani provincial government of Punjab included in its budget for fiscal 2013-14 a sum of 61.35 million Pakistani...

Washington: Questioning the effectiveness of America's secret surveillance programme, a top investigative publication here has said the US intelligence failed to track Mumbai attack convict David Headley and he was arrested only after a tip off was provided by the British intelligence. The Libyan militia group that the State Department hired to defend its embattled diplomatic mission in Benghazi had clear al-Qaida sympathies, and had prominently displayed the al-Qaida flag on a Facebook page for months before the deadly attack. That organization, the February 17th Martyrs Brigade, was paid by the U.S. government to provide security at the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya. But there is no indication the Martyrs Brigade fulfilled its commitment to defend the mission on Sept. 11, when it came under attack.

New Delhi: Coming under increasing criticism from India for not awarding the death penalty for 26/11 Mumbai Attacks plotter David Headley, US Authorities defended on Friday that Headley hadn’t been awarded death penalty as he had ‘cooperated with the security agencies during the investigation process’. “This decision was taken because of Headley's willingness to cooperate with law enforcement authorities -- American, Indian and others -- to help bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent other terrorist attacks," read a US embassy statement. The statement is being viewed as veiled snubbing to India's requests to award death penalty to Headley, or...

Washington - The United States has sought a jail term of 30 to 35 years for American born Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist David Headley for his role in Mumbai attack and other terror activities. "The government submits that a sentence of 30 to 35 year's imprisonment strikes a fair and just balance between the aggravating and mitigating factors applicable to Headley." "While there is no question that his criminal conduct was deplorable, his decision to cooperate, and the uniquely significant value that cooperation has provided to the government's efforts to combat terrorism, support the government's recommendation," Attorney Gary S Shapiro said in...

The last of the Mumbai Muslim terrorists was executed recently in India. Good. The Fort Hood jihadi is still on the government payroll. That is heinous, a crime against civilized society. Another ally alienated, more jihadi horror and mass murder sanctioned by the Islamophliac in the White House. On November 26, 2008, jihadists staged 11 coordinated shooting and bombing attacks across Mumbai, India killing 164 people and wounding at least 308. The carnage was unimaginable, the torture unspeakable. Ajmal Kasab, the only attacker who was captured alive, confessed upon interrogation that the attacks were conducted with the support of Pakistan's...
