The studio's decision came a day after President Trump took aim at the film, saying it was "made to inflame and cause chaos." The story follows a group of elites hunting "deplorables" for sport. Universal has decided to scrap the release of The Hunt — an R-rated satire in which elites hunt "deplorables" for sport — following a series of mass shootings across the country. The film had been set to hit theaters on Sept. 27. The studio's decision came a day after President Donald Trump took aim at the film — though he didn't name its title — and...

Universal Pictures has canceled the September 27 release of the controversial movie "The Hunt," in the wake of significant backlash over the film that depicts privileged vacationers hunting "deplorables" for sport. NBC’s Universal Pictures, which shares parent company Comcast with NBC News and MSNBC, told Fox News on Wednesday that the movie’s marketing campaign would be “temporarily paused” on the heels of the tragic mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, Dayton, Ohio, and Gilroy, California.

Over the weekend, ESPN pulled a previously cleared TV advert for the movie from their network while AMC aired a trailer during the season premiere of their TV drama The Preacher.

<p>In the wake of a trio of deadly massacres, the studio is evaluating its strategy for the R-rated Blumhouse satire in which elites stalk "deplorables." "Did anyone see what our ratfucker-in-chief just did?" one character asks early in the screenplay for The Hunt, a Universal Pictures thriller set to open Sept. 27. Another responds: "At least The Hunt's coming up. Nothing better than going out to the Manor and slaughtering a dozen deplorables."</p>

Hollywood has been pushing on-screen abortion at record levels, in an attempt to normalise it. According to Gretchen Sisson, a scholar who tracks how abortion is portrayed on-screen, popular shows such as Scandal, Dear White People, Veep and Shrill have been ‘unapologetically’ depicting on-screen abortion in ways which would have been ‘unthinkable a decade ago.’ Speaking to The New York Times, Sisson said: “You’re definitely seeing more of the matter-of-fact ‘I am pregnant, I don’t want to be, I’m going to have an abortion’, and it’s gone way up in 2019.” Sisson’s research focussed on tracking how abortions are depicted...

In this age of targeted advertising, I don’t think I have ever been owned by an algorithm as hard as whatever told Amazon to try to and get me to watch The Boys. YouTube ads, sponsored hashtags, Facebook feed spots, I literally could not escape ads for the superhero show, and it was like Amazon was only stopping short of having someone physically shake me and yell “This is a show for you!” in my face. Well, the algorithm was right. I really, really loved The Boys, which clocks in at a tight eight episodes for its first season, which...

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is quite the comeback for Quentin Tarantino. After the stillborn Hateful Eight and the loss of his mentor Harvey Weinstein into the maw of #MeToo, the writer-director is all on his own with his ninth film; he’s off-the-leash, flush with 90 million of Sony’s dollars, and what did he deliver…? A straight-up masterpiece. If this isn’t the movie Tarantino was born to direct (that was probably Pulp Fiction) OUATIH is unquestionably the movie his 27-year career has been chugging toward, the one where it all comes together: a passion for forgotten B-movies, for correcting history, for all things pop culture...

In memory of Rutger Hauer, here is one of the finest portrayals. As a Russian army officer who leads hundreds of his fellow Jews to rise up against their captors in one of the worst of the Nazi death camps. Hauer won a Golden Globe for his role as "Sasha" Perchesky. Escape From Sobibor premiered as a TV movie on CBS in the spring of 1987. But despite the medium it remains one of the most powerful films about the Holocaust ever produced. It has also been called remarkably faithful to the events that transpired.Escape From Sobibor (full movie), 1987

The spy film genre currently needs two things: a new James Bond, and an increase in clever female-driven spy films. These should be solved separately. With the classic character, James Bond, a few things instantly come to mind: a vodka martini, shaken not stirred; a stylish Aston Martin; a Walther PPK and associated slew of gadgets; the long-suffering and powerful M; and a string of beautiful “Bond Girls” who never make it to a second film and typically fall into bed with the superspy within a few scenes of meeting him. Bond has endured generations and lasted through a series...

Marvel Studios has announced that actress Natalie Portman will take up the hammer and replace Chris Hemsworth as Thor God of Thunder. Portman, who played Thor’s love interest Jane Foster in the first Thor film, has kept herself at arm’s length from the Marvel Cinematic Universe since her debut in 2011. Disney owns Marvel Studios. She has been so skittish about returning to the MCU that filmmakers had to use old footage and special effects to add her to the flashback scenes in its Summer blockbuster Avengers: Endgame. But at San Diego’s famed Comic Con this weekend, Marvel Studios announced...

The unintentional theme of this year's movie columns has been "accidental movies": ones I watched and ended up loving, despite a slow start or homely title. So it's fitting that today I talk about Michael Powell's and Emeric Pressburger's The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943). Based on its awkward moniker, I'd long assumed that The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp was one of those grimy, eat-your-spinach English anti-war comedies like The Bed Sitting Room and Oh, What a Lovely War. So what was it doing on so many "greatest movies of all time" (or at the very...

After “Avatar’s” impressive 10-year reign as box office champion, “Avengers: Endgame” has officially dethroned James Cameron’s sci-fi epic to become the biggest movie of all time. On Saturday, Disney and Marvel’s blockbuster crossed $2.7892 billion at the global box office. Once weekend ticket sales are tallied, the tentpole will exceed the $500,000 needed to surpass “Avatar’s” $2.7897 billion benchmark. “Avengers: Endgame” has amassed $853 million at the domestic box office, making it the second-highest grossing movie in North America behind “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($936 million). Internationally, it collected a mighty $1.9 billion, boasting especially strong performances in China...

The Cats movie released its official trailer on Thursday, which lead to wildly divisive reactions on social media as fans had their claws out, ready to tear it to shreds. Taylor Swift stars as Bombalurina, who is seen in her tight catsuit as she sprinkles cat nip on the floor, with a cast that includes James Cordon, Judi Dench, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba and Jennifer Hudson.
