Senator Jean Carnahan wagged her finger and glared at her Republican challenger in Missouri. She claimed Jim Talent had just called her patriotism into question at Thursday's debate. Talent replied that he was only questioning her votes against parts of President Bush's agenda. The aggressive move by Carnahan came in the middle of an otherwise cordial forum at Columbia College. Both major party candidates tried to associate themselves with President Bush. Talent has said Carnahan doesn't support Bush's homeland security bill. He's also criticized the incumbent for voting in committee to cut missile defense, although she later voted for it....

(Latest Update Oct. 24) Jim Talent (R) favored over Sen. Jean Carnahan (D), 40 to 39 (Talent has a 50.6% chance to win; Carnahan's chances downgraded from 50% on Oct. 24 and from 51.3% on Sept. 22, and on Sept. 4 from 52.2% and on Feb. 15 from 53.3%) DEMOCRATIC SEAT AT CRITICAL RISK Sen. Jean Carnahan (D) has never won an election. She was appointed to this seat after her late husband, former Gov. Mel Carnahan, was elected to it in 2000 after dying in a plane crash, defeating then-Sen. John Ashcroft, the current U.S. attorney general. Though Carnahan...

We are a little over two weeks away from the election. So I ask you the same question I asked myself. Who is going to win the battle for the senate? I have done extensive research and watched the trends for a while now, just like many of you. I finished a week ago a statistical analysis of voting trends in Georgia. Let me also state that most elections are referendums on the incumbents. Candidates have to expose the incumbent. Dole failed to do this in 1996. So here are my predictions. GA- Max Cleland is in trouble. Do not...

ST. LOUIS -- A poll conducted for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and KMOV-TV shows a close race in Missouri's U.S. Senate campaign. The poll conducted by John Zogby will be published in a copyright story in the Sunday edition of the Post-Dispatch and was posted late Friday on stltoday.com, the Post-Dispatch Web site. It shows Republican nominee Jim Talent with 47.1 percent support, compared to 46 percent for incumbent Democrat Jean Carnahan. Because the statewide survey of 801 likely voters has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points, the results indicated a virtual dead heat. But...

A pre-emptive strike drove the crowd inside, but it didn’t seem to dampen the mood as Oklahoma Congressman - and former University of Oklahoma football star - J.C. Watts visited Columbia yesterday to boost the Senate campaign of Jim Talent. Only hours before the football Tigers kicked off against OU, Watts gave an impassioned speech on behalf of Talent, a former House member from St. Louis County who is locked in a tight battle with incumbent Democrat Jean Carnahan. Saying the Missouri race is probably the most important Senate battle in the country, Watts cited bills that have passed in...

<p>Still smarting from St. Louis' November 2000 debacle at the polls, the city's Election Board now faces a new election embarrassment: Its absentee ballots aren't ready.</p>
<p>Under Missouri law, absentee balloting was to begin on Sept. 24 for the Nov. 5 election. But in St. Louis, it probably will be later this week before the ballots are available -- although one official offered hope that ballots might be in hand later today.</p>

Revving up a well-worn election-year ritual, the handlers of Missouri’s U.S. Senate candidates have intensified the argument about when and where the two candidates should debate. For now, incumbent Democrat Jean Carnahan and Republican challenger Jim Talent have scheduled only one mutually acceptable debate, an Oct. 24 tussle at Columbia College that is co-sponsored by the Tribune. Otherwise, the two campaigns have each publicized dates that are unacceptable to the opposition. Yesterday, the Talent campaign, in conjunction with the state Republican Party, went on the offensive. In a conference call with reporters, Talent campaign manager Lloyd Smith said incumbent senators...

<p>Jim Lembke, a Republican candidate for the state House, showed up with campaign brochures and an appeal for help.</p>

<p>It might be a little easier for some voters to cast an absentee ballot for the Nov. 5 election in St. Louis County, where election officials Monday changed their interpretation of a new state elections law.</p>
<p>Coincidentally, today is the first day voters can cast absentee ballots for the election.</p>

<p>Sen. Jean Carnahan's skeet-shooting may have helped her regain some momentum in Missouri's closely contested U.S. Senate race.</p>
<p>The Post-Dispatch's latest statewide poll by Zogby International shows Carnahan, a Democrat, with a slight edge over her Republican rival, former Rep. Jim Talent. Of the 501 likely voters polled statewide last week, 47.6 percent supported Carnahan, compared with 40.3 percent for Talent.</p>

SHIELDS: Welcome back. Missouri is one of the key contests for control of the U.S. Senate, with polls showing the race a tossup. After her husband, Governor Mel Carnahan, was killed in a plane crash during the 2000 campaign, but still defeated Republican Senator John Ashcroft on election day, Democrat Jean Carnahan was appointed to the U.S. Senate. Mrs. Carnahan is being challenged by Republican former congressman Jim Talent, who himself was defeated for governor in 2000. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, POLITICAL AD) SEN. JEAN CARNAHAN (D), MISSOURI: It's a matter of right and wrong. We cannot let dishonest people in...

<p>Sen. Jean Carnahan's latest ad focuses on a subject that many candidates have avoided: Sept. 11.</p>
<p>The ad, which began running Friday statewide, even features a map of Afghanistan.</p>
<p>"After September the 11th, the world will never be the same and we must make sure we're prepared," says Carnahan, D-Mo., in the ad. "I was proud to be with the first group of U.S. senators to go to Afghanistan to meet with our troops and the country's new leaders."</p>

<p>Before heading back to Washington this weekend, Sen. Jean Carnahan is firing off a few campaign shots. Literally.</p>
<p>Carnahan, D-Mo., plans to shoot skeet Friday at an event on a farm in Missouri's Bootheel. It'll be the first time that she's fired a weapon in public during her U.S. Senate campaign, although Carnahan often has mentioned that she won a sharpshooter's medal in college and once outshot her security detail.</p>

<p>Republican nominee Jim Talent enters the final, 10-week stretch of the U.S. Senate campaign in a stronger position than the incumbent, Sen. Jean Carnahan, D-Mo., a new poll of Missouri voters shows.</p>
<p>Of 801 likely voters polled statewide, 47.1 percent supported Talent, compared to 46 percent for Carnahan. The margin of error is 3.5 percentage points, which makes the matchup "too close to call," said pollster John Zogby.</p>

<p>Republican U.S. Senate nominee Jim Talent on Tuesday rolled out his own proposal for prescription drug coverage, which he says is more practical and cost-effective than the plans considered so far by Congress.</p>
<p>Talent, a former congressman, had delayed announcing a specific plan for months, saying he wanted to examine all the plans that the Senate recently rejected.</p>

At the mid-July convention of the NAACP, President Kweisi Mfume drew attention to a “callous, deliberate and clearly unconstitutional effort to suppress” the black vote in Florida during the 2000 presidential election. He was correct, but probably didn’t realize he was describing the plight of African-Americans attempting to vote Republican. In an project to research and verify claims of minority votes being disallowed during the 2000 Florida vote, John R. Lott Jr., and James K. Glassman, resident fellows at the American Enterprise Institute, found that black Republicans were victims of widespread discrimination. Writing in the Los Angeles Times, Lott and...

<p>Two matters that touch everyone - death and taxes - are merging into one potentially powerful issue in this year's Missouri contest for the U.S. Senate.</p>
<p>Sen. Jean Carnahan, D-Mo., and her chief Republican rival, former Rep. Jim Talent, are sparring over her recent votes regarding estate taxes. He says she voted against "permanent estate tax relief," which the state Republican Party says proves that Carnahan's a liberal. She says she does support estate tax relief for most Missourians, and accuses Republicans of intentionally misinterpreting her votes.</p>

Schelske will appear on H&C on May 17th with his wife Sara Evans. Brooks and Dunn will hold a fundraiser for his campaign on May 3rd.From articles of his campaign: [Evans has said she] sees a natural crossover between country tunes and Republican politics. Like any country star worth her rhinestones, she sings about daddies and mommas, truck stops and broken hearts. But there's an underlying theme of liberty in her music. "Country music definitely fits that whole mind-set," Evans says. "Stay out of our lives. Don't tell us what we can and can't do. Don't tax us out of...

<p>The Missouri Democratic Party is calling on Republican Jim Talent to make public his billing records for his work last year as a lobbyist for a Washington-based firm.</p>
<p>Democrats allege that the $231,000 that Talent received wasn't for bona fide work, and that the Washington lobbying firm may have served as an illegal conduit for financial aid from three Republican-leaning businesses.</p>
