CLEVELAND, Ohio -- "Caucasians fever Be a believer In the Cleveland Caucasians..." You'd be hard-pressed finding fans of Chief Wahoo singing this version of the Cleveland Indians fight song. But it's been a winning pitch for Cleveland T-shirt designer Brian Kirby. You could say it's the All-Star, Rookie of the Year and MVP of sports T-shirts. The logo lampoons Chief Wahoo -- adding blonde hair and a dollar sign for the feather and substituting "Caucasians" for Indians. And it's caught on – big, out of the blue. Kirby sold $20,000 of the shirts during one recent 24-hour period – so...

The San Francisco Giants and 49ers both said Thursday they are "disturbed" by allegations that the CEO of the company that provides concessions to AT&T Park and Levi's Stadium was caught on video kicking and abusing his dog. Media reports have circulated surveillance video of a man identified as Centerplate CEO Desmond Hague kicking a frightened puppy and choking it with its leash in a Vancouver elevator last month. The Connecticut-based company handles food and beverage sales at numerous entertainment venues, including for the Giants and 49ers. Its Board of Directors said in a statement that it has censured Hague,...

In a touching interview with Jeremy Schaap of ESPN, Pete Rose spoke of the reasons why he gambled on baseball, acknowledging he made a terrible mistake when he gambled and also erred in signing away his future when he was suspended. Prompted by Schaap, he concluded with a plea to Bud Selig to let him back in the game for which he has such a passion.

Rob Manfred was elected baseball's 10th commissioner Thursday and will succeed Bud Selig in January. A labor lawyer who has worked for Major League Baseball since 1998, Manfred beat out Boston Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner in the first contested vote for a new commissioner in 46 years. The third candidate, MLB Executive Vice President of Business Tim Brosnan, dropped out just before the start of voting.

From manager Mike Redmond after the game: "To lose a ballgame tonight on that play is a joke. It's an absolute joke. I don't think anybody who plays this game should feel good about winning that game. And I would say that if had been reversed. That guy was out by 15 feet. It was a great baseball play. G threw a strike to Matty. He was out by 15 feet. He didn't slide because he couldn't slide because he was out by so far. And yet those guys in New York decided the outcome of that game ... "No...

Major League Baseball has hired openly gay former ballplayer Billy Bean as their new Ambassador For Inclusion. Bean's job will be to assure all MLB stakeholders of an inclusive and equitable workplace and provide awareness and educational resources that help mandate the league's workplace code of conduct. "It's ironic that I am returning to baseball to help erase the same reason I left," Bean told Outsports in an exclusive interview. Bean left baseball in 1995 shortly after his then-partner passed away. Bean skipped his partner's funeral to play in a game for the Padres, lest someone discover he was gay.

Burke, who came out to team-mates in the 1970s and to the public in 1982, died of AIDS in 1995 aged just 42.More than two decades after Glenn Burke abruptly retired from Major League Baseball, the former LA Dodgers outfielder will be honored at Tuesday night’s all-star game as one of the few professional athletes to have come out. Burke's four-and-a-half year career is remembered for his charismatic attitude and the pressures he faced as a gay athlete in the late 1970s. Burke, who played for the Dodgers and the Oakland A's, was the first professional ball player to come...

The San Francisco Giants are considering a new dress code for fans, which may include a ban on fake Native American headdresses and other “culturally insensitive” clothing. The proposal for a new dress code comes after two Native Americans were detained during a Giants game last month after asking a fan to remove a headdress they found disrespectful. If approved, the new policy could be a first for a major-league sports franchise,

The train traveled overnight, carrying him from his roots to his calling. This was not a trip Babe Ruth planned, expected or even hoped to make. He was comfortable in his native Baltimore, still in awe of his surroundings after his exodus from an orphanage and reform school, still content pitching and pounding out home runs for a first-place Orioles team in the International League. But that team was sagging in attendance and bleeding money, and it had shipped three of its better assets -- Ruth, Ben Egan and Ernie Shore -- to the American League, to Boston, to recoup...

Jim Brosnan, who achieved modest baseball success as a relief pitcher but gained greater fame and consequence in the game by writing about it, died on June 29 in Park Ridge, Ill. He was 84. The cause was an infection he developed while recovering from a stroke, his son, Timothy, said. In 1959, Brosnan, who played nine years in the major leagues, kept a diary of his experience as a pitcher, first with the St. Louis Cardinals and later, after a trade, with the Cincinnati Reds. Published the next year as "The Long Season," it was a new kind of...

Pete Rose has a vision. Someday his career hits record will be tied, and he will respond with one final turn at bat. He will roll a single up the middle and crawl to first base for No. 4,257, reclaiming his title as Hit King. Rose related this fanciful dream on the phone the other day, at the end of a lively conversation. The problem with the story, obviously, is that he is 73 years old and has been barred from baseball since 1989. But there has to be a better ending out there, somehow. Life is good for Rose....

A New York man who was caught sleeping at a recent Yankees game against the Red Sox on ESPN is filing a $10 million defamation suit against broadcasters Dan Shulman and John Kruk for their "avalanche of disparaging words," according to the New York Post. Andrew Robert Rector admitted that he "briefly slept" while in attending the April 13 game between the A.L. East rivals, and when ESPN cameras caught him sleeping during the fourth inning, the Sunday Night Baseball announcers launched into what he described as an "unending verbal crusade" against him, with their "vituperative utterances" redistributed on the...

Voting for the starting position players for the MLB All-Star game ends tonight at 11:59 p.m. (Eastern). The final rosters will have 34 players on a side, with all teams being represented. Factors I weigh in making my choices (in descending order): 1) How the guy is doing this year. 2) How he did last year. 3) How he did the last two or three years. 4) The guy's whole career. Here then are my choices, starters listed first, followed by backups: NATIONAL LEAGUE C: Lucroy, Molina, Posey 1B: Goldschmidt, Freeman, Rizzo, Morneau 2B: Utley, Murphy SS: Tulowitzki, Ramirez 3B:...

CLEVELAND - The red block letter C for Cleveland seems to be replacing Chief Wahoo outside Progressive Field. But not everyone sees it that way. Robert Roche is the director of the American Indian Education Center and one of the plaintiffs planing to file a federal lawsuit in late July against the Cleveland Indians. The group says the team's name and the Chief Wahoo logo are racist. The group wants a lot of money to help Native Americans with education, job training and housing. "We're going to be asking for $9 billion and we're basing it on a hundred years...

Tony Gwynn, the left-handed right fielder who starred at San Diego State and then for the San Diego Padres, passed away Monday morning after a four-year fight with salivary-gland cancer. Gwynn's death comes a day after he received a contract extension to coach the San Diego State Aztecs baseball team. The fifty-four-year-old San Diego legend had been on medical leave. The bowling-ball shaped hitting machine batted .338 in twenty major league seasons, all with the Padres. He finished with 3,141 hits. In addition to his eight batting titles, Mr. Padre also collected seven Gold Gloves patrolling right field. The fifteen-time...

A year ago, Manny Machado was the toast of baseball. He was an All-Star and got solid mention in the MVP voting at just 21 years old. Now, in the eyes of the A's anyway, he's just toast. The A's beat Machado's Baltimore Orioles 11-1 Sunday. Machado knocked the A's Derek Norris out of the game in the sixth inning by twice winging the catcher with his backswing. Then in the eighth inning, Machado didn't like a first pitch inside from the A's Fernando Abad. His reaction was to swing and release the bat after a second inside pitch, the...

Could Johnny Football ditch the pads and cleats for a future on the diamond as Johnny Baseball? Probably not. But he might want to consider it. The Cleveland Browns quarterback was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 28th round (No. 837 overall) of the 2014 MLB Draft Saturday. Manziel was listed as a shortstop for Texas A&M, although he hasn't stepped foot on the baseball diamond since his junior year of high school. Apparently, he was a pretty decent infielder and even talked to Texas A&M baseball coaches about joining the team in 2012.

At this writing, Astros outfield prospect Domingo Santana is batting .297/.374/.493 as a 21-year-old in Triple-A. That good production comes after a 2013 campaign in which he slugged .498 with 25 homers as a 20-year-old in Double-A. In other words, Santana is becoming a potentially important part of Houston's rebuild. The Astros acquired Santana as part of the 2011 trade in which they sent Hunter Pence to the Phillies. Houston also landed Jon Singleton and Jarred Cosart in that same deal. So it's turning out being pretty costly for the Phils and GM Ruben Amaro. Why are we talking about...
