In a touching interview with Jeremy Schaap of ESPN, Pete Rose spoke of the reasons why he gambled on baseball, acknowledging he made a terrible mistake when he gambled and also erred in signing away his future when he was suspended. Rob Manfred was elected baseball's 10th commissioner Thursday and will succeed Bud Selig in January. Major League Baseball has hired openly gay former ballplayer Billy Bean as their new Ambassador For Inclusion. Bean's job will be to assure all MLB stakeholders of an inclusive and equitable workplace and provide awareness and educational resources that help mandate the league's workplace code of conduct. "It's ironic that I am returning to baseball to help erase the same reason I left," Bean told Outsports in an exclusive interview. Bean left baseball in 1995 shortly after his then-partner passed away. Bean skipped his partner's funeral to play in a game for the Padres, lest someone discover he was gay.

Tony Gwynn, the left-handed right fielder who starred at San Diego State and then for the San Diego Padres, passed away Monday morning after a four-year fight with salivary-gland cancer. Gwynn's death comes a day after he received a contract extension to coach the San Diego State Aztecs baseball team. The fifty-four-year-old San Diego legend had been on medical leave. The bowling-ball shaped hitting machine batted .338 in twenty major league seasons, all with the Padres. He finished with 3,141 hits. At this writing, Astros outfield prospect Domingo Santana is batting .297/.374/.493 as a 21-year-old in Triple-A. That good production comes after a 2013 campaign in which he slugged .498 with 25 homers as a 20-year-old in Double-A. In other words, Santana is becoming a potentially important part of Houston's rebuild. The Astros acquired Santana as part of the 2011 trade in which they sent Hunter Pence to the Phillies.
