by Mark Finkelstein June 22, 2006 Maybe it was just 'tough love,' but the Today show gave the Democrats a rather rough going-over this morning. And cast in the role of flip-flopping heavy was none other than John Kerry. The subject matter was Democrat disunity over plans for Iraq, and co-host Campbell Brown set the tone by suggesting that the internal debate could be evidence of "a Democratic party at war with itself." Norah O'Donnell began the segment she narrated by observing that "Republicans are working to exploit Democratic divisions in November elections." After noting that Kerry has a proposal...

A top Senate Republican accused the New York Times on Sunday of carrying out a campaign to compromise national security by continuing to reveal top secret information about the Bush administration's terrorist surveillance program. Asked about the prospect of public hearings into the counterterrorism program, Sen. Mitch McConnell told "Fox News Sunday": "We're already talking about this entirely too much out in public as a result of these leaks and the New York Times continuing to write about it - and it's endangering our efforts to make Americans more secure." Citing anonymous sources, the Times reported on Sunday that former...

(Note: The following is a transcript of remarks delivered by Senator Mitch McConnell yesterday on the floor of the U.S. Senate.)Mr. President, somewhere out there in our country today walks the next member of the Supreme Court of the United States.Very soon this senate will begin to debate that person's confirmation. We don't know yet the nominee's professional background or experience, but sadly, if the past is any guide, we do know what kind of reception that nominee is likely to receive, and that is why I rise to speak today. No one would argue -- no one -- that some...

Statement Of U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell On The Crisis In The Sixth Circuit Court Of Appeals from the Office of Senator Mitch McConnell Thursday, May 12, 2005 WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell delivered the following statement today on the Senate floor: “Mr. President, for the last four years I have taken to the floor to decry the crushing burden under which the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals operates. “The years change, but one seemingly immutable fact remains: the Sixth Circuit remains the slowest judicial circuit in the country by far. “The Sixth Circuit has 16 seats. It covers...

Senate Majority Whip Mitch McConnell of Kentucky told CBS's "Face the Nation" on Sunday that the Republican Party now has the votes in the U.S. Senate to stop any planned Democratic filibuster of the president's judicial nominees. "There's no doubt in my mind, and I'm a pretty good counter of votes ... that we have the votes we need," McConnell said on the Sunday morning news program. That quickly brought out a spokesman for Harry Reid to challenge that claim.

A Letter From Sen. Mitch McConnell To Sen. Harry ReidDear xxxxxxx, I thought you would be interested in reading the letter below from Sen. McConnell of Kentucky to Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada. The vote on ending the filibuster of judicial nominees who are not liberal activist judges will be held next week. This will be, without doubt, one of the most important votes in our history. We are governed by three separate but equal branches of government. If only liberal activist judges are allowed to serve, then the judiciary will become the ruling body of our government and the legislative and...

WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen. Mitch McConnell's first memory is of buying a pair of shoes at a Georgia shop, shortly after being told that he would be able to walk after all. Marking the 50th anniversary of the government's approval of a vaccine for polio, McConnell took time on the Senate floor Tuesday to describe being struck by the disease when he was 2 years old. Though he was better off than many victims of polio, which can cause severe muscle damage, paralysis and death, the Kentucky Republican said the quadriceps muscle of his left leg was affected. With his...

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell today delivered the following statement on the Senate floor: “Mr. President, I rise today to discuss a matter of considerable relevance to the debate about the war in Iraq and the recent Senate Report on the Intelligence Community. This report has illuminated a subject of considerable controversy and partisan criticism of the President. “I also rise to speak about the importance of maintaining a basic standard of fairness in American politics. “I’m talking about the controversy that erupted over the infamous “16 words” in the State of the Union Address that Senator Kerry,...

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Ronald Reagan's face could soon adorn the $10 bill or half the dimes minted in the country, if fans of the late president get their way, according to a published report. USA Today reported Tuesday that Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., plans to sponsor legislation to have Reagan replace Alexander Hamilton, the nation's first treasury secretary, on the $10 bill. The proposal has the support of Ronald Reagan Legacy Project, which is headed by Grover Norquist, an influential conservative activist.

Most of us old enough to have been reading newspapers and watching television in the mid-1980s remember when the Soviet-backed Marxist-Leninist junta “Sandinistas” were battling the anti-communist guerrilla army of “Contras” in Nicaragua. And who could forget the overblown Iran-Contra affair, the attempt to arm the Contras through a deal to swap arms for hostages with the mullahs in Iran. What might be hazy in the memory after 20 years, however, is the Keystone Kops, I-want-to-play-president role of the freshman senator from Massachusetts, John Forbes Kerry. Still humming his “Give peace a chance” mantra from Vietnam days, Kerry jumped into...

At a time when free speech issues are rife at the University of Louisville, a preeminent attorney specializing in First Amendment rights recently spoke on campus. On March 1, Floyd Abrams discussed some of the largest cases he has worked on as an attorney. Best known as co-counsel in the Pentagon Papers case, Abrams primarily discussed his latest role working with Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., prosecuting the McCain-Feingold bill that intends to reform campaign finance. According to Abrams, the bill disallows any group from running television advertisements that refer to political candidates within 60 days of an election, 30 days...

FRANKFORT, Ky. — When he was a Major League pitcher, Jim Bunning had more pluck than luck. As a U.S. Senate candidate and senator, the reverse appears to have been true, as we are likely to see again Tuesday, the filing deadline for major party candidates in this year's elections.

The writer, a Louisville Republican, is Kentucky's senior U.S. senator. He is the Senate Majority Whip — the second-ranking Republican in the U.S. Senate.

At the conclusion of the debate on campaign finance reform in both 2001 and 2002, I took to the floor of the U.S. Senate to map out for my colleagues what this law would do if enacted: decimate the national parties, crown stealth outside groups king of a soft money monarchy and stifle political discourse at a time when it's most important — immediately preceding an election. Now that the Supreme Court has decided not to save Congress from itself, we will live under the very system I described, decried and fought against for nearly a decade.

WASHINGTON - Their lawsuits have been defeated in the courts, and now a Senate bill would tell obese Americans that their weight gain is nobody's fault but their own. The "Commonsense Consumption Act," a bill introduced by tort-reform champion Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., would prohibit obese Americans from suing food companies for weight-related medical conditions. A federal judge in New York already threw out two such lawsuits earlier this year. Read McConnell's bill. The legislation also represents another move by Republican legislators to curb class-action lawsuits and the sway of powerful trial lawyers. By a one-vote margin Wednesday, the...

Senators Say U.S. Troop Morale in Iraq is Good By Gerry J. GilmoreAmerican Forces Press Service WASHINGTON, Oct. 16, 2003 - U.S. senators recently returned from Iraq say life is looking up for its citizens and that American troop morale there is good. "I think that a lot is going in the right direction in Iraq," Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell told reporters at a Pentagon news conference today. "We visited schools. We saw youngsters in the street -- who couldn't have been programmed – who were waving at us and giving '(the) thumbs up' (sign),'" the Kentuckian recalled. The...

WASHINGTON, Oct 2 (Reuters) - Lawmakers who want Iraq to repay the United States for its reconstruction voiced growing confidence on Thursday that the U.S. Congress will make part of the $87 billion bill for Iraq in the form of loans, defying President George W. Bush. Republican leaders in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives worked to stem a push among their own members to make Iraq use its future oil wealth to repay some or all of the $20.3 billion Bush has proposed to rebuild it. But a spokesman for House Speaker Dennis Hastert, an Illinois Republican, said...

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A Republican candidate for lieutenant governor said Thursday he would step aside after a judge ruled he had not lived in Kentucky long enough to run for the state's second-highest office. Hunter Bates has been the running mate of Ernie Fletcher, a congressman and a leading GOP candidate for governor. Bates, 35, has spent most of the last six years in a Virginia suburb of Washington, D.C. The state constitution requires candidates for lieutenant governor to live in Kentucky for six years preceding an election. Bates, a former chief of staff to Sen. Mitch McConnell , has...

EDITOR’S NOTE: The newspaper accounts tell us that Senator Trent Lott is taking the names of who is or isn't going to stand by him while he tries to maintain his hold on power by any means necessary. Well, so is NRO. We know the senators want this matter to operate by the super-secret rules of the Skull & Bones Society, but it's too important for that. Excuse us for noting the performance of senators at a crucial time for the GOP. Don Nickles - Thank You. Over the weekend, while Trent Lott's 49 other colleagues were linking their arms...

If Democrats insist on passing a resolution censuring Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott for praising the 1948 presidential candidacy of one-time segregationist Sen. Strom Thurmond, Republicans will offer an amendment censuring West Virginia Democratic Sen. Robert Byrd for using a racist epithet during a TV interview last year, a top Senate Republican said Sunday. "Any such resolution [censuring Lott) would be fully amendable and amendments would be offered based on statements by other members in the other party in the body in recent years," Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell told ABC's "This Week." Sounding taken aback by the warning to Democrats,...

WASHINGTON, Sept. 6 — House and Senate negotiators said today that efforts to pass a bill that would clean up the nation's voting procedures were falling apart as partisan disagreements grew with the approach of the fall elections. Large bipartisan majorities of the House and the Senate voted for different versions of the legislation, intended to prevent ballot disputes like those that bedeviled the 2000 presidential election. Among other things, the bills would provide money to help states buy new voting machines. Senator Christopher S. Bond, Republican of Missouri, an architect of the Senate measure, said the outlook for enactment...
