MM: Well, it’s certainly true that they could get what they have claimed for years they wanted to do by doing nothing. They could get a big Defense cut, and they could get a massive tax increase. But of course, they don’t want to get a tax increase on everybody, only on the top two rates. Also, do they really think it would be good for the economy for all of this to kick in? I tell you, I think the fundamental observation I would make about all of this right now, whether it’s this totally unserious proposal from the...

In a sign that more Americans are feeling upbeat about their economic prospects, more people were running or starting new businesses in 2011 - the highest level since 2005, according to a study released Thursday. More than 29 million Americans were engaged in entrepreneurship last year - a 60 percent gain from 2010, according to a report issued by Babson College and Baruch College. And nearly 40 percent of these entrepreneurs are expected to create more than five new jobs during the next five years. "There is renewed interest in entrepreneurship," said Donna J. Kelley, associate professor of Entrepreneurship at...

A huge red algal bloom along vast stretches of southeastern Australia's coastline Thursday resulted in beaches being closed and turned swathes of usually pristine ocean milky pink. A swimmer stops short of a red algae bloom at Sydney's Clovelly Beach on November 27 The algae, noctiluca scintillans, forced the closure of Sydney's Bondi beach and a number of neighbouring inlets earlier this week, and government officials said it had now spread along the fringes of two states. "Samples taken at Bondi Beach on 27 November confirmed the presence of noctiluca scintillans, which appears as a pinkish to reddish discolouration in...

Hilary Hinton “Zig” Ziglar, the man of a million motivational maxims who bucked up and cheered on three generations of Willy Lomans over a 40-year international speaking career, died near his home in Plano, Texas, on Wednesday after a brief battle with pneumonia. He was 86. His son, Tom Ziglar, announced Mr. Ziglar’s death in an email to the corporate mailing list of the family’s motivational business. A onetime cookware salesman who boasted he was “born in L.A. — Lower Alabama,” Mr. Ziglar wrote the 1975 motivational book, “See You At The Top,” but it was rejected by 30 firms...
  • Study Finds Sea Level Rise was 60 Percent Higher Than UN Projection

According to NBC News, a newly released peer-reviewed study has concluded that sea levels between 1993 and 2011 rose by 3.2 millimeters per year. This number is nearly 60 percent more than the 2-millimeter annual projection made by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change over the same time period. The disparity between the two numbers raises a point that the projections for the upcoming decades could also be too low and that sea level could rise much more than current estimates predict. Here are some facts and details about the new study and what it could mean for...

Sen. Susan Collins (Maine) on Wednesday became the latest GOP senator to raise questions about Susan Rice. After an almost two-hour meeting with the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Collins said she's unconvinced by Rice's explanation of her role after the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi, Libya. “I continue to be troubled by the fact that the UN ambassador decided to play what was essentially a political role at the height of a contentious presidential election ... by agreeing to go on the Sunday shows to present the administration's position,” the top Republican on the Homeland Security Committee said.

While new satellite images show preparations for what is believed to be a coming long-range missile launch by North Korea, a second attempt in 2012 would be unprecedented, a top satellite image analyst told Security Clearance. There have been four launches of this scale since 1998, including a failed attempt in April of this year. A second launch in 2012 would be the first time North Korea has launched two systems of this class, their largest missile class, in less than three years. "The fact that they are now apparently preparing for a second launch in 2012 indicated that the...

"You know it's going to be boring, but you just don't appreciate how boring it actually is," one first-year associate at a large New York law firm tells us. The young lawyer describes long days of reading dense papers, which he only barely understands, and which seem to have no bearing on any actual case. "Doc review is the most boring experience of your life, but strangely nerve-wracking because you know you're messing it up, but you just can't bring yourself to care that you're messing it up. And you're probably going to mess it up even if you did...

Are you ready for this? I know… WOW. This swirling maelstrom of clouds is what was seen over Saturn’s north pole earlier today, November 27, by NASA’s Cassini spacecraft. This is a raw image, acquired in polarized light, from a distance of 238,045 miles (383,097 kilometers)… all I did was remove some of the hot pixels that are commonly found on Cassini images taken with longer exposures. Again… WOW. My attempt at a color composite can be seen below, plus another treat: It’s rough, and a little muddy because the clouds were moving between image channels (not to mention the...

Pacific Legal Foundation, located in Sacramento, has filed a new lawsuit on the constitutionality of Obamacare that will be heard by the Supreme Court. Sacramento, CA; November 7, 2012: After this week’s election results, the costly, burdensome and intrusive Affordable Care Act (ACA) — “Obamacare” — is less likely than ever to be reformed, let alone repealed, by elected officials. But a promising, powerful legal challenge is still going forward — litigated by attorneys with Pacific Legal Foundation, a watchdog organization that defends limited government, free enterprise, and individual rights, in courtrooms nationwide. “Especially after the election of 2012, PLF...

ObamaCare exchanges could pass as early as Thursday, we need to get the word out immediately to have folks call their State Reps and demand a no vote! Now for the specifics: The House Health Policy Committee has held hearings on the version of the ObamaCare Exchanges that the Senate passed earlier in the year. We are told that this version would not pass but another version is being worked on. We are told that Gail Haines is one of those working on the "substitute bill". Warning that more than 2 million Americans are poised to lose their long-term unemployment insurance, some Democrats are calling on Congress to extend the “economic lifeline” before it expires next month. Some Republicans, though, are demanding that an extension of jobless benefits—and any other form of new spending—be offset through savings or spending reductions elsewhere in the federal budget. In a letter to party leaders last week, Sen. Jeff Sessions said that extending the unemployment benefits another year carries a $26 billion price tag. Couple that with the cost of keeping the 2 percent payroll tax cut on the books...

Top House Republicans announced their recommendations Tuesday for the new Congress’ committee chairmanships, an all-male list that includes returning Paul Ryan to the Budget panel and seven new faces to head other committees. The leaders proposed waiving the GOP’s six-year term limit for Ryan, R-Wis., to keep his chairmanship. … Several other long-term committee chairs would be replaced, including Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., who has led the Foreign Affairs Committee. Instead, the leaders recommended Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif. Asked about the lack of women among the leaders’ recommendations to head committees, Michael Steel, spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio,...

The number of Utah citizens going to the polls continues to drop. The “Salt Lake Tribune” reports that while election officials point to 80 percent voter turnout across the state, that number only reflects registered voters, and doesn’t include more than half-a-million Utahns who are eligible to vote but not registered. Overall, the number of people in the state who cast ballots in the presidential election was 57 percent. That’s basically the same number as the 2008 election, when Utah placed 9th lowest in the country in voter turnout.

A third of poorer Germans do not think hard work will get them anywhere, while over half of the younger poor said they would never be able to climb the social ladder, a new survey shows. An overwhelming majority of Germans on a low wage under the age of 30 said they believed it would be impossible to move up into the next wage bracket, according to the survey conducted by Allensbach pollsters for Bild der Frau women’s magazine. One third of those questioned—regardless of age or income—said individuals could not get anywhere by trying alone, and that a person’s...
