Given our disappointing results, embracing Keflezighi is understandable. But Keflezighi's country of origin is Eritrea, a small country in Africa. He is an American citizen thanks to taking a test and living in our country. Nothing against Keflezighi, but he's like a ringer who you hire to work a couple hours at your office so that you can win the executive softball league.

As Larry Johnson nears the Kansas City Chiefs' all-time rushing record, more than 10,000 fans have signed an online petition pleading for team officials to deactivate the running back after he posted homosexual slurs on his Twitter account. The petition — which has garnered 10,716 signatures as of early Thursday — calls on general manager Scott Pioli to act before Johnson, 29, surpasses running back Priest Holmes for the team rushing record. "We are asking you, as fans of this team, this organization, and of the pride that this city has in the Chiefs, please deactivate Larry Johnson," the petition...

Just how bad for Obama were Tuesday's election results? So bad White House senior adviser David Axelrod went on Fox News Wednesday to try and spin it? In case you've forgotten, this is about two weeks after Axelrod told ABC's George Stephanopoulos, "[T]hey're not really a news station." I guess that's changed now that the Republicans have come back to life (video of Major Garrett's unedited interview with Axelrod embedded below the fold, part of it was aired on Wednesday's "Special Report"):

WASHINGTON – Companies across the economy are finding ways to do more with fewer workers, dimming hopes that hiring will take off anytime soon. Employers became leaner and more efficient in the third quarter. Wages, meantime, remain flat or falling. The result is that productivity — output per hour of work — jumped at the fastest pace in six years. The good news for companies, though, is bad news for the jobless. As long as companies can get their workers to produce more, they have little reason to hire — at least until consumer spending picks up. And the squeeze...

It’s no secret that the media loathe Sarah Palin, but the recent attention given to Levi Johnston proves how far they will go to smear her name. Johnston is the father of Palin’s grandson, ex-boyfriend of Palin’s daughter Bristol and future Playgirl centerfold. He penned an article for the October issue of Vanity Fair in which he accused the former vice-presidential candidate and governor of Alaska of diva-like behavior, poor parenting, hiding a troubled marriage and repeatedly calling her youngest son the “retarded baby.” To CBS, this was more grist for the anti-Palin mill. It seemingly confirmed every media-generated caricature...

At a school in Madison, Wisconsin, President Obama tells of how his daughter Malia went from a 73 on a science test to a 95. She originally thought an 80 was considered "pretty well, but after regrouping and some perseverance, she earned the higher mark, prompting her to say, according to Obama, "I just like having knowldge." (Or maybe thank goodness for affirmative action!)

Team Obama held a grand opening a new Organizing for America office in south St. Louis City today. They must have received enough donations during the campaign last year that they still have money left to open new office locations. The St. Louis Tea Party Patriots joined them at their grand opening celebrations. There were as many protesters outside as paid and unpaid activists inside the offices tonight.

A CROC show presenter from Cairns could be the next Steve Irwin. With the launch of his new wildlife adventure series on DVD, his good looks and his Irwinesque charm, Cairns conservationist Corey Wild is being touted as the new wildlife warrior. "Steve and I share similar interests and passions and he was a great inspiration to me," said Mr Wild, who works as a presenter for a crocodile attack show at the Johnstone River Crocodile Park and as a snake catcher. While Mr Wild has received what he calls "love bites" from crocodiles over the years, he said he...

Jessica Simpson and Dolly Parton have found more to bond over than their blonde locks and country crooning. The famously busty pair found common ground this week over the difficulties of having an ample bosom. "Aahhh chiropractor... Hurts so good :-) you lug these around and see if your back don't hurt!" Parton, 63, posted to her Twitter account Monday morning. Simpson, 29, a longtime fan of Parton's, responded to the tweet with an "Amen sister :)."

WASHINGTON - The White House distanced itself Wednesday from Democratic losses in two states, saying the races for governor hinged on local issues and were not a referendum on President Barack Obama. The Republican victories Tuesday in Virginia and New Jersey energized the opposition and are a setback for Obama as he struggles to overhaul the U.S. health care system, win passage of climate change legislation, and build political support for his handling of the war in Afghanistan.

Last night, Countdown host Keith Olbermann named Beck his “Worst Person” in the recurring segment, which in itself is not news. But last night he used language that rarely, if ever, is used towards another person on a news program. After calling out Beck for “invoking 9/11 just to oppose health care reform,” Olbermann ended by telling him to “Go to Hell.” Wow.

When I interviewed director Roland Emmerich a few months ago about his upcoming disaster flick "2012," the first question I asked was, "Why do you like killing the world?" His response: "It makes for a good story." Over the past fifteen years, Emmerich has crafted some great tales about global doom, featuring some spectacular scenes of destruction. He had aliens zap the White House in "Independence Day," he let a massive lizard flatten New York City in "Godzilla," and he sent killer tornadoes through downtown Los Angeles in "The Day After Tomorrow." For "2012," Emmerich set his sites on destroying...

Two words… “Barbara Boxer,” the mental midget for whom no US surrender is too quick, no tax too high and no government program too big. Sometimes the smart fight is the good fight and a partial victory better than a moral victory. California is not a red state or a purple state where a RHINO is a defeat. It is one of the bluest of the blue. BHO won California by 24% and 3,000,000 votes. BHO won here by more votes than the total votes cast in New Jersey last night! Boxer won her last race by 20%. You may...

IMAGINE a scientist came up with a way of solving "Global Warming" without ending the use of fossil fuels and other measures which threaten to destroy the US economy. One would think that Al Gore and his research team would be delighted and would be pushing the scientist's findings to a wider audience. But buried in a recent Newsweek story is an example of how Gore's team tried to change some Inconvenient Science to suit their agenda. According to Timothy LaSalle, who Gore consulted for solutions to Global Warming, we could solve the "problem" of CO2 emissions by clever use...

Assume the statutory speed limit of 70 MPH; the tendency of the local constabulary to ignore violations up to 5 MPH over; A stream of traffic in the right-hand lane averaging 68-72 MPH; and a certain sense of scofflawry and haste on my part that may rise to the level of a ticket without tipping over into the “reckless” category; and the fact that I am therefore in the continuous process of "passing on the left" all of those law-abiding drivers in the right lane. A question: exactly how fast must I be going before I must make way for...

BEDFORD, Pa. - In exchange for no jail time, a woman and her adult daughter have agreed to stand outside a Pennsylvania courthouse holding signs saying they stole a gift card from a 9-year-old girl on her birthday. Fifty-six-year-old Evelyn Border and 35-year-old Tina Griekspoor stood outside the court for 4 1/2 hours Tuesday. They held signs that read: "I stole from a 9-year-old girl on her birthday! Don't steal or this could happen to you!"

On the home page of the Washington Post website this morning, the headline for liberal columnist Ruth Marcus is "Ignore the hype." Inside the newspaper, it's "As Virginia goes, not so much." Marcus advises that this GOP landslide is all some meaningless fairy tale: Advice to readers about the coming orgy of analysis about the New Jersey and Virginia gubernatorial elections: Ignore it. Disquisitions on The Meaning of It All for President Obama or the 2009 results as a harbinger for Congress in 2010 have scant basis in reality. Over-interpreting election results is an occupational hazard for political reporters. This...

With the upcoming disaster film "2012" and the current hype about Mayan calendars and doomsday predictions, it seems like a good time to put such notions in context. Most prophets of doom come from a religious perspective, though the secular crowd has caused its share of scares as well. One thing the doomsday scenarios tend to share in common: They don't come to pass. Here are 10 that didn't pan out, so far:

Let November 3, 2009 be known as the start of the republican revolution. We have gone to the polls and spoken. We have spoken in Virginia and the very blue New Jersey. The sanctity of marriage looks like it has been preserved in Maine and Washington. Rob Astorino has defeated three term incumbent Andy Spano as Westchester County Executive. This county is 2:1 democrat. This is the start of more good things to come. My year-long depression is finally lifting.

AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Keith Olbermann, host of "Countdown" on MSNBC, recently poked fun at the location of the tea party next week. Olbermann was doing a story about upcoming tea parties scheduled across the country. When Olbermann mention the one scheduled in Amarillo, he pointed out that it would be held at John Stiff park, in one of the picnic areas. Then, sarcastically, said he hoped people won't interrupt the event going on in an adjacent picnic area. Olbermann was making a point at where the party's were being held. ABC's 'V' mini-series, which will debut tonight (Tuesday) in the first hour of prime time, is “nominally a rousing sci-fi space opera about alien invaders bent on the conquest (and digestion) of all humanity,” but “it's also a barbed commentary on Obamamania that will infuriate the President's supporters and delight his detractors,” Miami Herald TV critic Glenn Garvin asserted in a review distributed by the McClatchy/Tribune news service and run in Tuesday's Chicago Tribune, among other papers.

I am very, very excited about the upcoming road trip for my book. It will be an honor to meet as many of you as possible! “Going Rogue” publisher HarperCollins is working hard to schedule book signings across the nation, and we’ll be announcing the locations in the next day or two. I’ve decided to travel to cities outside of the typical book tour venues, and I hope to cover as much of the country as I can. We’re in the process of arranging interviews with local and national media. An interview with Oprah Winfrey is already scheduled, and I’m...

WASHINGTON (AP) - After months spent criticizing Democrats' health overhaul plans, House Republicans have produced a draft proposal of their own. It's much shorter and focuses on bringing down costs rather than extending coverage to nearly all Americans. A 230-page draft was obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press. A spokeswoman for Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, said changes were still being made before the bill would be finalized in time to offer as an alternative when Democrats begin floor debate on their bill, possibly at the end of this week.

Reports coming in from New Jersey indicate that voter turnout - this morning at least - was significantly higher in many Republican Districts than in Democratic Districts. These are not exit polls from New Jersey, but simply observations of turnout in key districts. That trend would seem to bode well for Republican Candidate Chris Christie against incumbent Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine. The question is, will it continue into the afternoon and evening?

On Monday’s AC360, CNN’s Anderson Cooper forwarded the media’s new talking point about the New York 23 congressional race, that “Tea Party protesters and other conservative voices are...driving moderates out of the GOP.” Correspondent Tom Foreman continued on this note, stating that “angry conservatives...[are] forcing the party to choose between...its base and attracting more moderate Americans.” Cooper led the 10 pm Eastern hour of his program with the question, “Does the Republican Party have room for moderates?” The anchor outlined that “state and local elections tomorrow may have profound national effects, and President Obama and Sarah Palin are a big...

Good Morning America’s Diane Sawyer conducted a surprisingly tough interview with Al Gore on Tuesday, pressing him on profiting from global warming and whether or not climate change legislation is pointless in light of pollution-spewing countries such as China. She also forced the ex-Vice President to respond to a challenge from Glenn Beck. Sawyer even pointed out the amount of methane gas created from the bodily functions of cows, observing that it's "20 times more damaging it is than CO2." The host, who will become the anchor of World News in January, then played a clip of Fox News' Beck...

While analyzing the off-year elections across the country on Tuesday’s CBS Early Show, co-host Harry Smith asked Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer about the New York 23rd congressional race: “...this notion that an insurgent conservative, orthodox conservative, would come in and really unseat the party’s choice for nominee there...is this a precursor of what might be happening a year from now?” Schieffer used similar labeling to describe Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman and race’s impact on the GOP: “The Republican Party right now is still split. And I think right now it’s the conservatives who kind of have the...

BRIDGEPORT -- CBS sportscaster Jim Nantz will have to pay his estranged wife nearly $1 million a year in alimony and child support, a Superior Court judge ruled Monday. While Judge Howard Owens states in a nine-page decision that a large part of testimony before him by Nantz and his wife, Lorrie, related to faults for the breakdown of their 26-year-old marriage, he ruled the conduct of either party was far from "egregious."
