MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. (Aug. 28, 2005) -- About 80 Marines debarked a plane and ran into the open arms of loved ones here Aug. 28, following a seven-month deployment to Iraq. The Marines, from A Company, Marine Wing Communications Squadron 38, Marine Air Control Group 38, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, were deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. “(The separation) was really hard,” said Tricia Noel, wife of Sgt. Nicholas B. Noel, company guide. “It’s great to have him home." Other squadron members were also on hand to welcome the Marines home, including the group...

A Florida surfer said he acted as ''bait'' to try to distract the shark while he wrestled the 14-year-old girl onto his surfboard: ''I've never been so scared in my life.'' The teen later died. Off Miramar Beach on the Gulf Coast of Florida's Panhandle, longtime surfer Tim Dicus has seen the dark, lithe shadows dart beneath the water -- the glistening gray fins split the waves. He was once even bumped by a shark, he said. But Saturday was different. Dicus tussled in the water with what experts say was most likely an 8-foot-long hungry bull shark hellbent on...

LaForte AL TAQADDUM AIR BASE, Iraq (April 10, 2004) -- The two weary but light-hearted crew chiefs lounged around in the CH-46E Sea Knight helicopter that is referred to as a "Phrog." They were in "alert 30" status - meaning that if a call came, the helicopter would be in the air in under 30 minutes. One of the chiefs casually looked out the window to see their other pilot beating feet towards the chopper at breakneck speed. They just got...

The future of Marine Aviation is grim. The Corps plans to eliminate 36% of its fighter-attack aircraft (F/A-18s and AV-8 Harriers) as part of the Navy-Marine TacAir Plan. The V-22 tilt-rotor remains "in development" and soaring costs allow only half the number desired to be funded each year. Meanwhile, the Corps will buy new engines to extend the life of its ancient CH-46Es, yet again. This has delayed plans to overhaul and upgrade 111 of the Corps 165 CH-53Es. Now there is talk of buying new CH-53Ks, since the ageing Echos may be too costly to rebuild. However, there will...

SAN DIEGO (AP) - President Bush declared Thursday that ``we're winning'' the war against terrorism as he carefully kept his distance from the California gubernatorial recall campaign that has overshadowed his own re-election bid. Bush has called the effort to recall Democratic Gov. Gray Davis ``a fascinating bit of political drama,'' yet he all but ignored it after arriving here from his Texas ranch. Bush kept his emphasis on fighting terrorism and on his role as commander in chief - his political strong suits - on a day he also was raising $1 million for his campaign. Bush indirectly devoted...

The news on KOGO is saying there were at least 3000 people. My daughter, my son and I were on the sidewalk for a while waving our flags. Then we kept cirlcing around in the van while waving our flags and playing Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA" loud and clear. People started singing along with us. We finally left after 2 and half hours. Its still going on now as of 3:30pm PST. Some people have been there for over 4 hours. WHAT A GREAT COUNTRY. GOD BLESS THE USA AND OUR BRAVE TROOPS!
