Canada's new minister of National Defence has now been released from the Canadian Forces. Last week the Ottawa Citizen reported that Vancouver South MP Harjit Sajjan, a lieutenant colonel in the army reserves, was trying to get his release from the Canadian Forces. He was named the country's new defence minister on Nov. 4 by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Sajjan's status as a serving member of the military put him in a unique situation in that theoretically he would be required to take orders from generals who are supposed to be answering to him. "The Minister of National Defence's release...

He was both gunman and hostage, and, as he told a friend who was trying desperately to make him surrender, it was time for him to be "put down." When he fired at the officers, they returned fire, striking him nine times. And so, this summer when he saw his master lying in the flag-draped casket, Honor pushed through the clutch of weeping family members, reared up, placed his paws on the edge and tried to climb in. Unable to comfort Baker, the lanky black dog in the camouflage-patterned vest curled up underneath.

South Korea recently sold a hundred of its locally designed and made K9 155mm self-propelled howitzers to India for about $7.5 million each. South Korea has already sold 350 K9s to Turkey and 120 to Poland. While superficially similar to the American M109 the K9 is a heaver (46 tons versus 28 for the M109), carries more ammo and has twice the range (up to 56 kilometers in part because of a barrel that is a third longer). There is more automation on the K9, so it has a crew of five versus six on the M-109. South Korea thus...

Israel is offering for sale a laser weapon that can shoot down artillery and mortar shells as well as rockets and small UAVs. Called Iron Beam it has a range of 2,000 meters and is expected to enter service in Israel by the end of 2015. There is a lot of action on Israeli borders for a system like Iron Beam and it will soon become evident if Iron Beam is the first effective laser air defense weapon or not. Each Iron Beam firing unit consists of a radar and control system and two lasers. These three elements can be...

He is an award-winning combat photographer who stands accused of trying to pick up women in the public affairs office at MinotAir Force Base in North Dakota, and for that prosecutors wanted to put him in prison for 130 years. The prosecutorial zeal was so great that an Air Force officer appointed to investigate the case said the piled-up charges were combined to “artificially exaggerate the criminality of the accused,†who often was simply “socially maladroit and crass.â€

It’s been four years since NASA put out a recruitment call for more astronauts, but on Wednesday the U.S. space agency said it would be hiring again soon. A two-month application period opens Dec. 14. The agency hired just eight astronaut candidates during its last recruitment. Applicants who didn’t make the cut were in good company – nearly 6,400 people applied for the job. NASA currently has 47 astronauts available for flight assignments – less than one-third the size of the corps in 1999 at the peak of the shuttle program. Typically, crews of six or seven flew on the...

During a recent speech, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appropriately decried [1] the “apologetics" which have minimized the role played by ex-Mufti of Jerusalem Hajj Amin el-Husseini [2] (1895-1974) — founder of the modern Palestinian Muslim movement — in fomenting genocidal Islamic Jew-hatred. Netanyahu made these simple, irrefragable points, demonstrating [3] how from the 1920s through (in particular) the World War II era: ... the father of the Palestinians at that time, with no [Jewish] state and no so-called “occupation," no territories and no settlements, already sought, through systematic incitement, to annihilate the Jews. Regrettably, Hajj Amin el-Husseini is...

Some Michigan high school students are redefining the term "extracurricular activity." In addition to club meetings, band practices and football games, University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy teens are also signing up to serve as pallbearers for homeless veterans. Six students recently volunteered to be pallbearers for three dead homeless veterans. Senior Joshua Gonzales is one of the student leaders who helped develop the program. He said this new opportunity for students is "meant to help dignify and respect the human being." The students' initial plan was to carry the caskets for homeless individuals, said the Rev. Karl...

Kids in Maplewood, N.J., were recently disappointed, then excited again, to learn that their school’s Halloween festivities had been cancelled and then reinstated. Maplewood’s Seth Boyden Elementary School has traditionally hosted spooky activities on or around October 31 but has found that more and more parents are choosing to opt their children out on account of the holiday’s pagan origins. “We have a very diverse school district,†district spokeswoman Suzanne Turner said. “Every year, we have students who opt out of the [Halloween celebration] and the principal felt that number was significant enough,†to cancel this year’s festivities. At least...

The M16A4 may soon retire. This week, the Marine Corps announced via internal memo that the M4 carbine will become the primary-issued rifle in infantry and security units, as well as replace the M16 rifle in supporting training schools by September 2016. Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. Robert Neller approved the change, which was first proposed to the previous commandant, Gen. Robert Dunford, according to Marine Corps Times. This decision falls in line with the Army's phased transition away from the M16 over the past few years. The M16A4 is on the outs simply because it is outdated, and...

The mother of Sgt. Rafael Peralta asked God to bless the ship named for her son and keep the crew safe before smashing a bottle of Champagne on the ship's bow Saturday. Peralta, who pulled a grenade against his body to protect his fellow Marines during close combat with insurgents in Fallujah, Iraq, on Nov. 15, 2004, is believed to be the first serviceman born in Mexico to have a naval warship named in his honor.

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan — While visiting this sprawling military installation north of Kabul last week, I visited the flight line of the 455th Air Expeditionary Wing. And then I stumbled into a little history.

The plane is an F-16C Fighting Falcon, commonly known in the service as a Viper. The U.S. military has at least one pair of fighters airborne over Afghanistan virtually all the time, carrying out everything from the armed over-watch and protection of ground units to airstrikes against insurgents.
