Liam Palmer says his dream is to serve in the British Army. But the military won't accept the 21-year old with gaping holes in his earlobes from ear piercings, followed by stretching the skin with plugs. "I don't regret it. [Wearing ear plugs] was just a part of who I was," Palmer says about his younger counter-culture days of gelled hair, skinny jeans and ear plugs - also known as ear gauges or "tribal" ear piercings. "Patients realize [ear gauges] are not becoming in terms of job hunting or work - sort of like tattoos," Edwards says.

The song, which begins with a spoken introduction by Kris Kristofferson, tells the tale of Niles Harris, a soldier in the 173rd Airborne Brigade of the United States Army during Operation Hump in South Vietnam on November 8, 1965. The intro mentions that Harris was "the guy that gave Big Kenny his top hat", and that he was among the wounded who were saved by Army medic Lawrence Joel, the first living African American to receive the Medal of Honor since the Spanish-American War of 1898.

I just have to say how proud I am of our Gen X politicians. It is clear that our country is in good hands and the future is bright. I just want to give a pat on the back the following: Gen X leaders like the following superstars: Governor Scott Walker, Rep. Paul Ryan (Wis.), Senator Rand Paul Senator Ted Cruz Senator Tom Cotton Senator Jonie Earnst Senator Cory Gardner Senator James Lankford Senator Tim Scott Senator Mike Lee Rep Steve Scalise Rep Richard Hudson Rep Jeff Duncan Governor Matt Blunt Rep Sean Duffy These poor folks have so much...

Arkansas elected Republican Rep. Tom Cotton to the Senate on Tuesday, sending incumbent Mark Pryor packing. You might not be surprised that a Republican won in Arkansas in a heavily GOP year, but Cotton's victory is a much bigger deal than you probably think. His election is a significant step for the future of GOP foreign policy, and thus perhaps for American foreign policy. Cotton, you see, is the golden child of the Republican party's hawkish establishment. He still calls the 2003 Iraq invasion a "just and noble" war. He's young — just 37 — and fervently backed by some...

The Oak Ridge Boys sing a song called G.I. Joe & Lillie which is a tribute to Veterans with a very personal touch by singer Joseph S. Bonsall. The Oak Ridge Boys first sang the song while performing at the American Music Theater in Lancaster, PA, and the audience included his parents as well as forty other veterans from the Southeastern Pennsylvania Veterans Home. Joseph wrote the song to honor them and after they performed it that night there was not a dry eye in the place. If you’d like to read the book G.I. Joe & Lillie it is...

I have a Benelli SN that I use for regular hunting/trap duties. Was thinking about a home defense shotgun. Would It make more sense to buy a different gun? M500? 870? or just buy a shorter barrel for the SN? I also have 2 45s and a Marlin 30/30 and a Win 7mmMag but I think the wife would be more comfortable with an easy to use Shotgun... I liked the 500, the Win spx was ok.. but the safety was too far. havent tried any others yet... just thought I would get some opinions... Mod the Benelli or new??

Air Force Tech. Sgt. David Shea sensed no danger as he stood with his .50 caliber machine gun ready at the open ramp of his CV-22 Osprey coming in to land on a small, rutted airstrip in Bor, South Sudan. A crowd of up to 10,000 people milled about a United Nations compound 200 feet below, where 30 U.S. citizens were waiting that sunny Sunday morning for the Ospreys to evacuate them from a country slipping into civil war. The Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) crews and 21 Navy SEALs on board to protect the operation had been told...

During the early morning of Oct. 25, 1893, a column of 700 soldiers from the British South African Police camped in a defensive position next to the Shangani River. While they slept, the Matabele king Lobengula ordered an attack on the column, sending a force of up to 6,000 men—some armed with spears, but many with Martini-Henry rifles. Among its weapons, the column possessed several Maxim machine guns. Once a bugler sounded the alert, the Maxims spun into action—and the results were horrific. The Maxim gunners mowed down more than 1,600 of the attacking Matabele tribesman. As for the British...

As the American Marines deploy to Seoul, the bright lights of the city obscure their vision. Fire, smoke and ash mask the skyline. The jarheads push through the streets, a tank crawling over trenches to provide covering fire. “We’re tracking a drone swarm coming your way,” a voice squawks over the radio. The ’bots appear on the horizon, a hundred of them buzzing in an eerie, synchronized swarm. It’s the mid-21st century, and America is fighting yet another war on foreign soil. This is the opening mission of the newest installment in Activision’s multi-billion-dollar video game franchise Call of Duty....

A risque video featuring bikini-clad beauties firing high-powered guns and riding in tanks has landed four Utah National Guard soldiers -- and veterans of war in Afghanistan and Iraq -- in hot water. The guard members face discipline for unauthorized involvement and use of military vehicles in a video promoting a "behind the scenes" look at the making of this year's "Hot Shots Calendar." The company behind the calendar claims that a portion of the proceeds go to help wounded soldiers, but the video shoot, conducted at Camp Williams and at a private gun range near Salt Lake City, violated...

Abigail and Dr. James Van Allen and his wife, Abigail, met “by accident” when she backed into his car at a stoplight in Baltimore. He scowled, but said nothing. When she ran into him again a few minutes later at the applied physics lab at Johns Hopkins University where they worked, she said, “Who do you think you are, throwing those dirty looks?” He called her the following Sunday to go bicycling. The Van Allens married on Oct. 13, 1945, in Southampton, Long Island. They lived right outside Washington, D.C., until 1951 when Van Allen accepted the position of head...

While Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo., is on the ropes in his bid for re-election, his cousin, Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., is now trying to fend off the momentum of retired U.S. Marine Corps Col. Allen Weh, who is near or within the margin of error in the latest polls. Just a week ago, Udall led Weh by 16 points. Since then, an Albuquerque Journal survey shows a seven-point race (50-43) while a Vox Populi poll released Monday suggests a 47-43 Udall lead. Weh said another poll has the margin down to two percentage points, and there are good reasons for...

Little was recognisable of 22-year-old Lieutenant Alexis Helmer after he took a direct hit from a German shell at Ypres on the Western Front one May morning in 1915. His pals gathered what they could find of his remains into sandbags and then arranged them in the shape of a human inside an army blanket. At sunset he was buried — just another of the hundreds of thousands of men of the British Empire to die in World War I. The officer who spoke over his grave as the battle raged around them was his close friend Lt-Col John McCrae,...

I was supposed to have surgery on one of my ankles to reduce chronic pain. Eventually, I will need flatfoot corrective surgery on the right foot too. I've been ready for quite some time, and miss being able to walk without limping like an old man. The procedure would be a Sub-Talar Fusion. I have Veterans' Health Insurance only. I was less than 3 days away from the surgery date when I got a call from one of the Resident Surgeons. Apparently, he had been told that I use e-cigs and sometime actual cigarettes. My actual cig use is very...
