At some point on this Memorial Day weekend, stop a minute to remember all those Americans who have fallen in all the wars this nation has waged. And then, next, let’s contemplate what we ought do, if there is any action we might take, in memory of those who didn’t come home alive. There are indeed numerous charities caring for veterans and their families, which are worthy of support, should you have the time or money to contribute. But as citizens, we still owe something more to those who have given, as President Lincoln spoke at Gettysburg, “their last full...

On Memorial Day we honor our sons and daughters who gave their lives when their nation called on them We need to remind ourselves that Memorial Day is not just another three-day weekend or a day when all manner of sales are offered to those who want to go shopping. It is a day set aside to honor the ultimate sacrifice of those who have fought to defend our nation and take military action in foreign nations. We honor, too, those who suffered wounds and returned home. We like to think of America as a nation that has gone to...

Seventy years ago, we celebrated the end of World War II in Europe. That celebration is not the first memory of my childhood but it is one of the clearest. I was a 5-year-old boy in Cape Town, South Africa, proudly displaying a paper Union Jack, the familiar British flag, and watching the victory parade. I often wonder where the flags came from — before offset printing and photocopying — in time for the parade. Someone knew victory was at hand. There was a palpable, universal happiness — though more subdued, I am told, than the outbursts that greeted the...

On May 18, the U.S. average retail price for gasoline was $2.74 per gallon ($/gal), or 92¢ per gallon (¢/gal) lower than at the same time last year. This is the lowest average price heading into the Memorial Day weekend—the traditional start of the summer driving season—since 2009. Lower gasoline prices reflect lower crude oil prices, with the spot price of North Sea Brent crude oil at more than $45 per barrel ($/b) lower than the same time last year, despite having increased more than $10/b since the beginning of February. Average retail prices for all regions of the country...

We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Far too many people are indifferent to the meaning of Memorial Day, thinking of it as just a long weekend or official start of summer. There are cook-outs and family get-togethers but the only mention of the Memorial Day weekend is in store ads. Brass bands and ceremonies are performing to dwindling crowds. Americans have forgotten the sacrifices of those who perished to preserve their security, peace and freedom. What a tragedy that today so many citizens are willing to surrender these irreplaceable treasures to an American Idol tyrant. Memorial Day should never be confused with Veterans Day. On Memorial...

They simply don't make 'em like this any more. Take five minutes to watch this video interview -- and listen carefully to what he says and how he says it. I promise you, you won't regret a second of it. Ask yourself, how many of the few surviving WWII veterans kept themselves and their uniform in such good condition for over 70 years and can still proudly wear it? Notice his superb delivery, no teleprompter, no script -- just a 91-year-old fighter pilot representing the greatest generation at home and abroad who won WWII. He has some surprises and a...

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Tribune News Service) — A group of French-speaking 8th graders used toothbrushes to clean moss off old tombstones of African-American military veterans. Not something you see everyday in Kansas City. But there they were, 25 or so students from Academie Lafayette working to get Highland Cemetery, a segregated black cemetery from Kansas City’s early days, ready for Memorial Day. They planted flags on graves long forgotten in a cemetery long neglected. Seems like such goodwill deserved blue sky and sunshine. Aucune une telle chance. Uh, no such luck. It was 52 degrees, breezy and spitting rain. The...

In truth, they came to remember a hope and a dream. And all across the South hundreds of thousands heard that train Why is the proud history of the South being attacked? Did you read about students at a Texas University who want a statue of Jefferson Davis removed from the campus? A beloved Southern President was laid to rest on Memorial Day. Listen closely, when the wind blows, and you may hear a train whistle from the distance. Many songs have been written about the passenger trains. On Sunday, May 28, 1893, a few days before Memorial Day, a...

It's Memorial Day week. You can tell as you flip through the local paper; Memorial Day notices appear as sales headlines and attention grabbers. "Memorial Day Sale" and "Pre-Memorial Day Sale." Pretty soon, we'll see post-Memorial Day sale advertisements. Sales and barbecue are the two things that many people think about when Memorial Day is mentioned. What else? Well, for many Americans, it's the weekend that the pool opens and summer begins. But it means more than that. Memorial Day began soon after the Civil War as Decoration Day. It was the day the graves of the fallen members of...

Tim Chambers of Vista is famous for 5-hour frozen tribute to vets on Memorial Day weekend VISTA, Calif. — Every year on Memorial Day weekend, more than 800,000 motorcyclists rumble through the streets of Washington, D.C., in a display of respect for war dead and military veterans known as Rolling Thunder. And standing at the corner of Constitution Avenue and 23rd Street to acknowledge each and every rider is “The Saluting Marine.” Veteran Marine Staff Sergeant Tim Chambers of Vista started his silent vigil on a whim in 2002. Today, he considers the annual effort both his civic duty...

NANJING, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping said Saturday that denial of the Nanjing Massacre will not be allowed by the Chinese people or peace-loving people anywhere in the world. The Nanjing Massacre, committed by Japanese aggressors, was one of three major massacres during WWII. It was an atrocious anti-human crime and a dark page in the history of humanity, Xi said while addressing a state ceremony for China's first National Memorial Day for Nanjing Massacre Victims. "Anyone who tries to deny the massacre will not be allowed by history, the souls of the 300,000 deceased victims, the...

Black Beach Week used to get all the glory: Every Memorial Day weekend, 300,000 black people gathered in Miami Beach to get their freak on. And also create a tsunami of violence, robbery, shootings, carjackings, vandalism, mayhem, noise and trash. snip... Last year, a local radio personality said all the ruckus was just one big misunderstanding. She could speak for all of those who still refuse to believe that black mob violence exists out of proportion on Memorial Day. And every other day: "You had many more people up that way than previous years," said Jill Tracey. "You have that...

This Memorial Day Weekend, one of Northern Nevada’s oldest veterans was allegedly robbed and held at gun point in his Carson City home. World War II and Air Force veteran Jim Sorentino lives alone with a caretaker. He’s 101-years-old, and he said in his lifetime, he has never experienced anything like this home invasion. He said it was around 5 a.m. on Sunday when two men kicked in a rear-garage door, and forced their way into Sorentino’s home in a gated community on Canvasback Drive. They held him and his female caretaker at gun point. "The older one, the bigger...

FORT HUACHUCA — At what Army Chaplain (Col.) Samuel Godfrey calls “The Bivouac of the Dead,” a few people sat among their deceased loved ones. A small girl held the hand of a man, as she carried flowers to a grave, but too soon she was out of sight, disappearing among the tombstones as the annual Memorial Day Ceremony on Fort Huachuca’s Old Post Cemetery began Monday morning While Memorial Day is a time “for us to salute all the brave men and women” who have given what Abraham Lincoln said is “the last full measure of devotion” — their...

Every year in Rochester, NY, an organization called Metro Justice holds a Peace Parade on Memorial Day . The organization claims to fight for “economic, social, and racial justice,” but their efforts have been compromised in the past where the pre-born are involved. The pro-life organization Feminists for Nonviolent Choices (FFNVC) became a victim of Metro Justice’s dichotomous view of peace when they were excluded from the organization’s peace parade earlier this week. After attending planning meetings where the organization was told by Metro Justice that they would be allowed to participate as long as their message focused on peace,...

I live in a blue-collar suburban neighborhood. Many residents are 50+. I'd guess you'd call them JFK democrats. No hippies here, and a gun club within 10 miles of my house. Anyway, I took a long drive yesterday (Memorial Day), and only about one house in 20 had an American flag out front. I just don't understand it.

This Memorial Day weekend there were thousands of parades, picnics and remembrance events for those who died fighting for the United States. There were also sales and bargains for those that choose to spend the holiday traveling or shopping. Like all holidays, Memorial Day is sometimes at risk of losing its meaning in our commercial society, as shoppers and travelers forget about the sacrifices our troops and their families make. So here’s a gentle reminder after we all enjoyed time off from work and got our fill of backyard barbeques. As you read this, hundreds and thousands of men and...
