McCaskill, a Hillary Clinton supporter, said while criticizing Donald Trump that the country should not be divided and pointed to the rancor in Congress as proof of the problem.

Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill laid into Trump during an interview with Missouri radio host McGraw Milhaven, calling Trump a “buffoon” and questioning the voters who have been supporting him. “I wonder how many people that are voting for him that are kind of embarrassed,” the Missouri senator said on Missouri’s KTRS on Thursday morning, as first reported by BuzzFeed. “I have so many friends that are — I feel for them. A lot of Republican friends are just saying, ‘we can’t let this guy be commander-in-chief. He has no idea what he’s talking about.’”

It was August 7, 2012, and I was standing in my hotel room in Kansas City about to shotgun a beer for the first time in my life. I had just made the biggest gamble of my political career—a $1.7 million gamble—and it had paid off. Running for reelection to the U.S. Senate as a Democrat from Missouri, I had successfully manipulated the Republican primary so that in the general election I would face the candidate I was most likely to beat. And this is how I had promised my daughters we would celebrate. But first let me go back...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Donald Trump's incendiary comments - and the GOP response - are proving political gold for Democrats. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid jumped on both Tuesday, first attacking Trump for his criticism of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., then pivoting to a larger target: the growing GOP presidential field and the entire Republican Party. Reid, D-Nev., noted that while Trump's GOP White House rivals were nearly unanimous in denouncing Trump's suggestion that McCain is not really a war hero, they were more tentative in responding to his criticisms of Mexican immigrants as "criminals" and "rapists."(continued)

Other members of the Senate fumed Saturday over objections by Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Mike Lee (R-UT) that held up a $1.1 trillion omnibus bill meant to keep the government open. The objection was fueled by the two conservatives' desire to fight President Barack Obama's executive action on immigration. The objections by Cruz and Lee mean that the Senate must slog through procedural votes Saturday on nominees and also vote to end a filibuster on the omnibus bill at 1 a.m. on Sunday. It was too much for Democrats and even Republicans to bite their tongues over....

On a recent afternoon in the Senate majority leader’s office, Harry Reid decided he was done talking about his chief of staff, David Krone. Instead, he and his top aide wanted to chat about the Vatican. “We sure do like this new pope,” Mr. Reid said of Pope Francis. After a brief discussion about the pope’s opponents in the Catholic hierarchy, Mr. Reid, a Mormon from Searchlight, Nev., brought up the name of perhaps the pontiff’s most vocal critic, the American cardinal Raymond L. Burke, a once enormously powerful prelate who has lost key Vatican positions under Francis. “How about...

Missouri Democrat Sen. Claire McCaskill said on Wednesday that America's $17 trillion debt threatens to put the nation "in a position where we're not a first-tier nation anymore." McCaskill added, "I do believe a $17 trillion debt is irresponsible. I do believe that." McCaskill's Kansas City comments were part of her "McCaskill on Main Street" tour. The Missouri Democrat explained that the federal government is now doing things it should not be doing because lawmakers "want to be loved." "We have ourselves doing things the federal government was never intended to do. I mean, we weren't supposed to be buying...

Fortunately for Claire McCaskill, she doesn’t have to make that call in 2014, thanks to a narrow escape in Missouri’s 2012 Senate election. If she did have to campaign in the post-ObamaCare rollout environment, though, McCaskill would know better than to invite a deeply unpopular President to accompany her while making a pitch for another six years in office, she tells Morning Joe (via Mediaite):CLICK ABOVE LINK FOR THE VIDEO MARK HALPERIN: Senator, Mark Halperin here. If you were running for re-election in Arkansas, Louisiana or North Carolina, would you invite the president and campaign side-by-side with him?CLAIRE MCCASKILL: You...

Sen. Clarie McCaskill (D-Mo.) accused Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) of not listening to voters in general but only the “loud” ones. She told MSNBC that “the moderates need to muscle up here.” “You know, everybody on — in this far extreme, unreasonable, irrational right, is afraid of somebody running against them from the right. And they need to be afraid of a moderate Republican running against them,” said McCaskill, who defeated challenger Todd Akin in the last election cycle. “And people — and Boehner really needs to show courage here. I know that he’s calling this Cruz’s shutdown. Boehner knows...

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) on Monday called for criminal charges to be filed against people who defrauded a federal phone subsidy program. McCaskill sent a letter to the Federal Communications Commission, urging the agency to refer examples of fraud in its Lifeline program to the Justice Department for prosecution. "Knowingly providing false information to a government agency for profit must be investigated. If these companies are found in violation of federal law, I expect the DOJ will prosecute those responsible to the fullest extent of the law," she wrote.
