Rosenstein currently oversees special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into potential Russian collusion and interference in the 2016 presidential election. President Trump tweeted Wednesday that Sessions’ chief of staff Matthew Whitaker, a prominent Mueller critic, would be named acting attorney general.

Few Cabinet members have had as contentious a relationship with the presidents they serve as did Jeff Sessions, attorney general until approximately 13 hours after the last polls closed in the 2018 midterm elections. Sessions endured President Trump’s frequent critiques on Twitter and was the target of Trump’s frustration both in interviews and in West Wing conversations that were later reported by the media.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said on Wednesday that acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker should recuse himself from oversight of the Russia probe. “Given his previous comments advocating defunding and imposing limitations on the Mueller investigation, Mr. Whitaker should recuse himself from its oversight for the duration of his time as acting attorney general,” Schumer said in a statement.
