Gov.-elect Charlie Baker this morning said he would nix a Patrick administration plan to issue special driver’s licenses to non-citizens to comply with new federal rules. “I don’t support issuing driver’s licenses to people who are undocumented,” he said this morning on Boston Herald Radio’s “Morning Meeting” with Joe Battenfeld and Jaclyn Cashma

Desperate Democrats are rushing to save suddenly vulnerable House incumbents, even in states where President Barack Obama cruised to double-digit victories, amid fresh signs of Republican momentum less than a week before the midterm elections. The once friendly terrain of New York, California, Obama's native state of Hawaii and adopted state of Illinois all now pose stiff challenges to Democrats who are determined to limit their losses next Tuesday. Both parties agree the GOP will hold its House majority; the question is whether Republicans can gain enough seats to rival their post-World War II high water mark of 246. The...

Republican Charlie Baker has climbed to a 3-point lead over Democrat Martha Coakley in the race for governor, while a push to repeal casinos in Massachusetts appears to be headed for a lopsided defeat, a new Suffolk University-Boston Herald poll shows. Baker's 46-43 percent lead is well within the poll's margin of error but the GOP nominee holds several key advantages over his Democratic opponent heading into the campaign's final few days, according to the Suffolk-Herald poll of 500 likely voters. Just 6 percent of voters say they are undecided.

The development is about 15 years old One of the major reasons for those who push for a disarmed population to desire the registration of all firearms is that it makes the ownership of the means to self defense contingent on government approval.  This is the philosophy that "everything that is not permitted is forbidden", rather than the standard English/American philosophy that "everything that is not forbidden is allowed".  It is an enormous difference in perspective.  In Revere, Massachusetts, a homeowner evicted from a party after getting in a fight.   He returned with his 50 year old step father.  ...

A big-hearted Revere firefighter who left his wallet to dry on a firehouse window ledge after battling a blaze said yesterday he pities the career criminal accused of stealing it — but he’s more concerned about the two tykes she had in tow. “I feel sorry for her and for the kids she was with, too,” Jamie Nadworny told the Herald. “I’m glad they have her if she has a rap sheet. Hopefully she’ll get whatever help she needs. And I feel really bad for the kids. I hope they don’t follow in her footsteps.”

WORCESTER - Nicholas Dutan Guaman has been found guilty of manslaughter by motor vehicle in the 2011 death of a Milford motorcyclist. Mr. Guaman, who was behind the wheel of a pickup truck that struck and killed Matthew Denice, was found not guilty of second-degree murder. The verdict was delivered this morning by Judge David Ricciardone, who presided over the four-day bench trial in Worcester Superior Court. Mr. Guaman will be sentenced later this morning.

WORCESTER – A judge will decide on Monday whether Nicolas Dutan Guaman is guilty of murder after testimony concluded regarding the crash that killed Milford resident Matthew Denice. Judge David Ricciardone heard closing statements Thursday from the prosecutor, who argued Guaman was drunk and tried to flee following the August 2011 accident, and the defense attorney, who said his client had no idea he was dragging Denice and couldn't understand the witnesses who were screaming at him to stop. “This was an unbelievable perfect storm of circumstances,” defense attorney Peter Ettenberg said in Worcester Superior Court. “This was a chaotic,...

The Latin motto on the great seal of the State of Massachusetts, loosely translated, means: "By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty."  It is rather inconsistent with Massachusetts strict firearms laws.  Those laws became a little more reasonable on April 18th, 2014. A federal judge, relying on both the McDonald and Heller decisions and current Massachusetts law, effectively removed one class of prohibited people from the law. The case MICHAEL WESSON, THOMAS WOODS, and COMMONWEALTH SECOND AMENDMENT, INC.,  involves two well established men who had out of state marijuana convictions from decades ago.    Massachusetts decriminalized...

Many people who have followed the Justina Pelletier case—largely ignored by the mainstream media, by the way—have thought that there has to be more to it, or that it’s an outrageous out-of-the-ordinary affair. This is the case where the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families forcibly took custody from her parents over a year ago of a teenager who had been treated for years for mitochondrial disease (a genetic disorder), when they brought her to Boston Children’s Hospital for consultation about a related gastrointestinal problem and resisted a quickly-made diagnosis by a medical resident and a psychologist there that she...

A Massachusetts judge ruled Tuesday that the Connecticut teen in the middle of a contentious custody battle between her parents and the state will remain in the custody of the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families. The Boston Globe reported that Suffolk County juvenile court Judge Joseph Johnson granted “permanent” custody to the state DCF, leaving it up to the agency to decide if and when 15-year-old Justina Pelletier is returned to her parents’ custody. This decision was in response to a motion filed by Linda and Lou Pelletier, Justina’s parents, and her court-lawyer attorney for a “conditional custody” plan....

BOSTON,—The family of Justina Pelletier was emotionally distraught after a judge sentenced their sick daughter to the foster care system without access to her previous medical care. Justina is at the center of a legal battle between the Pelletier family and Boston Children’s Hospital over custody and proper medical treatment. Attorney Mat Staver of Liberty Counsel filed a motion for pro hac vice to represent the Pelletiers, but the judge took the rare move of allowing the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families (DCF) to respond to the motion, effectively denying the specialist attorney from arguing in the hearing. To...
