Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.), the top Democrat on the House Rules Committee, has died at age 88, her office announced Thursday. “To have met Louise Slaughter is to have known a force of nature. She was a relentless advocate for Western New York whose visionary leadership brought infrastructure upgrades, technology and research investments, and two federal manufacturing institutes to Rochester that will transform the local economy for generations to come," Liam Fitzsimmons, chief of staff, said in a statement. Slaughter had been hospitalized after suffering a concussion in her home, her office said earlier this week.
  • Joe Biden Locker Room Promise to John Danforth: Make Sure Anita Hill Testimony was ‘Very Quick’

Joe Biden made a promise in the Senate men’s gym to keep Anita Hill‘s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee “very quick,” according to former U.S. Representative Pat Schroeder. That promise was apparently made to then-Senator John Danforth of Missouri, a Republican. Danforth was Clarence Thomas‘ chief sponsor during Thomas’ 1991 Senate confirmation hearings. In a wide-ranging interview with the Washington Post on November 16, Hill and five of her biggest congressional boosters–all former or current female Democratic politicians–sat down to reflect on the strenuous ordeal that Hill went through during those hearings. Without fail, each of the six women...

U.S. representatives beat back an attempt Wednesday to disband the House Select Committee on Benghazi, as Republicans quashed the latest push from Democrats to try to discredit the panel ahead of a hearing later this month featuring former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. Rep. Louise Slaughter, New York Democrat and ranking member of the House Rules Committee, had introduced the privileged resolution, which cited recent comments Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy made about the work of the committee and Mrs. Clinton’s sagging poll numbers. The resolution was ruled out of order, and members voted to table an appeal of the...
  • House Democrats Will Try To Dissolve Select Committee On Benghazi Tonight

It probably wasn’t the best idea for Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), the presumptive successor to outgoing Speaker of the House John Boehner, to suggest that Hillary Clinton’s poll numbers were sinking due to the existence of the House Select Committee on Benghazi. The Clinton Team already has a campaign ad about it, and Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), who is challenging McCarthy for the speakership, called the remarks “absolutely terrible.” In a second salvo, House Democrats are aiming to dissolve the Select Committee on Benghazi tonight, with Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY) proposing the Rules Committee eliminate it tonight, though it’s bound to...

Unclassified documents and emails, never published in Western media until now, regarding the secret Muslim Brotherhood spy working for the America Embassy in Cairo, are being presented in the trial of Mohammed Mursi. They reveal the activities of a liaison between the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and the Muslim Brotherhood’s most senior leaders. Though employed by the embassy, Ahmed Aleiba does not have diplomatic immunities and was arrested by Egyptian authorities last month, according to the New York Times Bureau Chief, David Kirkpatrick. The trial, which begins on February 16th, will determine if Muslim Brotherhood Deputy Khairat Al-Shater and ousted...

If anyone is surprised about the government shutdown, Sen. Chuck Schumer said the tea party had it planned “almost a year and a half.” “The tea party was planning almost a year and a half before it happened. The issue of Obamacare is almost incidental. The real issue is they have almost a principle that they wanted to shut down the government because they hate it so, and that’s astounding,” Schumer said on CNN’s “New Day.” Schumer went further to say it was “meticulously” planned and that Speaker John Boehner has conceded to go along with it. “So anyone who...

The House approved a rule governing debate for the Republicans' Repeal of Obamacare Act on Tuesday. Members voted 240-182 in favor of the rule, which sets up five hours of debate that will take place Tuesday and Wednesday. Democrats strongly oppose the bill, a sentiment reflected in the rule vote. Only four Democrats supported the rule, and every voting Republicans favored it. Democrats voting for the rule were Reps. Dan Boren (Okla.), Larry Kissell (N.C.), Mike McIntyre (N.C.) and Mike Ross (Ark.). The vote came after a debate that seemed to raise the question of why five hours of debate...

When Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., lost the GOP primary to challenger Richard Mourdock this month, Beltway types saw the voters' verdict as a victory for the Tea Party and a defeat for the kind of Republican who could work across the aisle. I think Lugar, 80, lost because he was out of touch with Indiana. He started the primary registered to vote at an Indiana home he had sold in 1977. The Lugars have resided in Virginia ever since. Lugar had been working in Washington for so long that he didn't realize he needed to keep up at least the...

Democrats in House of Reps. joined J Street in supporting Obama administration's attempt to force Israel into making painful concessions Seventy-four Democrats in the House of Representatives have joined the dovish J Street organization in supporting the Obama administration's attempt to force Israel into making painful concessions to the Palestinian Authority. “In our view, support for a two-state resolution is inseparable from such support for Israel, its special relationship with the United States, and its very survival as a democratic homeland for the Jewish people,” the letter said. Seven Jewish members signed the letter, including Reps. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.), John...

US Politicians Duped By The Brotherhood In the United States, one individual maintained a pretense of "moderation" which would later embarrass the left and the right. According to the testimony of Dr. Michael Waller to the US Senate Committee on the Judiciary, Abdurahman Alamoudi was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. A man born in Eritrea in 1951, he arrived in the US in 1979 and became a naturalized US citizen on May 23, 1996. From 1985 onwards he became involved in many Muslim groups. In 1990 he founded the Washington DC-based American Muslim Council (AMC), which Waller states "has...

Because she thinks her re-election is in the bag! Louise represents District 28 which has part of Buffalo and Rochester in a very gerrymandered district. Rochester and Buffalo New York are rarely mentioned in the same sentence. Both cities are heavily democratic and are joined together as part of the 28th Congressional District of New York, currently held by Louise Slaughter. This is a perfect district to gauge "voter anger" According to the Main Stream Media TEA Party Groups are extremists. Anti Incumbent leanings are few and far between and are nothing to worry about. This anomaly will soon pass...

Oh crap, I’m not on Facebook either! (I have an ex-husband and ex-boyfriends. LOL) Here’s what you do: Go over to General Chat or the GOP Smoky Room thing or whatever. Make a vanity plea for a Facebook user to hit up Mark Levin’s Facebook site with a “shout out” for Dr. Rowland. I didn’t even know she had an opponent, that witch Slaughter. Maybe the voters there don’t know they have a choice! Put together a nice post, complete with links, and I promise the FReeper community will come to the rescue!

The Republican challenger is pragmatic about her long-shot candidacy. Rowland has been operating her campaign on a shoestring, spending only $376 through Sept. 2. As of that date she had raised less than $5,000 and had contributed only $250 of her own money. Even so, Rowland said she’s hoping to raise $100,000 for the race. Her campaign strategy involves personal exposure, attending public events, knocking on doors and doing interviews on radio and with other media. And she’s tapping into voter frustration with the federal government. “Right now there is a ruling elite party in Washington to tell you how...

I am not often surprised in the course of my job. But on Friday, during a news conference promoting high speed rail in New York state, I couldn't help but be surprised. Politicians do not usually say, in very clear terms, that the plan is to build first and ask questions later. Federal Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood was in town to help pump up the project. The feds have earmarked $151 million via the stimulus bill for high speed rail in New York state. But that only starts the process of building it; it will likely cost more money to...

Politics: The water spigots are back on, at least temporarily, in California's Central Valley. Turned off to protect a tiny fish, they happen to be in the districts of two congressmen "undecided" on health care reform. One could chalk it up to good fortune or just good constituent service. But in the middle of a contentious health care debate marked by Cornhusker Kickbacks and Louisiana Purchases, we may be forgiven if we find an announcement by the Department of the Interior regarding California's water supply a tad too coincidental. On Tuesday, the Department of the Interior announced it was increasing...

WASHINGTON -- Now playing in theaters every where: "Slaughter House Rules." In this latest sequel in the very bad B-movie horror series, Nancy Pelosi and her evil scientists manage to defy all that is good and in order to keep alive their Frankenstein bill that would have Boris Karloff racing for the exits shrieking in terror. Her death panelists have hatched a plot where they yet again breathe life into their rotting corpse long after voters have driven stakes through its heart in polls, at town halls and in several state elections. Only this time, it will be without any...
