Notable Scouts who earned the rank of Eagle Scout are Medal of Honor Recipient Leo K. As Baker's flag-draped casket was lowered from a small charter jet into the hands of six fellow Marines, his family and friends stood arm-in-arm, weeping on the tarmac at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. Stillness and silence dominated the scene. The sound of passenger planes taking off and landing was drowned out by the weight of the scene unfolding at ground level. That silence was broken only when a police bagpiper began playing "When the Saints Go Marching In." Baker's casket then was loaded into a waiting hearse, and scores of policemen and firefighters — from no fewer than 25 area...

Madison - Why would officials from the National Archery in the Schools Program look to Wisconsin to increase the number of kids involved? It's all about hunting traditions, according to NASP national director Roy Grimes, who led the discussion at a workshop hosted by the DNR Bureau of Wildlife Management recently in Madison. "When we decided to expand the program, Wisconsin was a natural choice based on the strong outdoor heritage that exists here," Grimes said. "That's especially true of archery." The goal is to engage more students in the educational process to improve classroom performance and reduce dropout rates....

Morlino presided over a Mass and then blessed animals and farm machinery in the church parking lot. The event was the third annual rural-life day organized by diocesan officials. Slideshow of Pumpkin Wall on Clement Avenue in Charlotte NC. I guess all the Starbucks drinking, Volvo driving yuppies that have infiltrated this region find this "utterly inspiring". Take this thing 20 miles down the road where the good ole boys still live and this thing would make for some real good target practice.

One of the largest drug roundups in Kentucky state history is underway right now. Law enforcement officials have fanned out across the state to arrest hundreds of people, in an effort to stem the tide of lethal prescription drugs flowing into the Tri-State from pain clinics in Florida. The round up started yesterday in eastern Kentucky and investigators say they already have at least 300 people in custody and they're hunting for hundreds more. At the Dry Ridge post of the Kentucky State Police they've brought in or are bringing in 25 of those indicted. The goal is to shatter...

As she was spinning and sliding,...

Love Can Mess You Up: Before Arthur David Horn met his future bride Lynette (a "metaphysical healer") in 1988, he was a tenured professor at Colorado State, with a Ph.D. in anthropology from Yale, teaching a mainstream course in human evolution. With Lynette's guidance (after a revelatory week with her in California's Trinity Mountains, searching for Bigfoot), Horn evolved, himself, resigning from Colorado State and seeking to remedy his inadequate Ivy League education. At a conference in Denver in September, Horn said he now realizes that humans come from an alien race of shape-shifting reptilians that continue to control civilization...

Authorities said they are shutting down the Bay Bridge in both directions after pieces of the cantilever section fell during the late-afternoon commute, striking three vehicles on the upper deck, the California Highway Patrol said. Caltrans officials said the parts that fell were two high-strength rods and a saddle that were part of the emergency repair that delayed the opening of the bridge on Labor Day weekend.

FRESNO, Calif. — Last month two men and their teenage sons tackled one of the world's most unforgiving summertime hikes: the Grand Canyon's parched and searing Royal Arch Loop. Along with bedrolls and freeze-dried food, the inexperienced backpackers carried a personal locator beacon - just in case. In the span of three days, the group pushed the panic button three times, mobilizing helicopters for dangerous, lifesaving rescues inside the steep canyon walls. What was that emergency? The water they had found to quench their thirst "tasted salty."

For most of us, the word "secession" conjures up images of the Civil War, Southern belles, and the Confederate flag. But for one Wisconsin town, secession has a whole other meaning. In 1967, state cartographers made a grievous error when creating the official state map of Wisconsin. An unlabeled dot lay between Lakes Poygan and Winnebago - the village of Winneconne had disappeared. After alerting Governor Knowles of the error, Chamber of Commerce president Vera Kitchen was particularly dissatisfied with his response. A secret committee of villagers began plotting a public relations effort to put Winneconne back on the map....

The Montgomery County Police Department's new rules for dealing with federalimmigration authorities may violate federal laws and hamper police officers ability to do their jobs, according to critics. A memo authorized by Police Chief J. Thomas Manger recently instructed officers that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents "will NOT be contacted, regardless of the individual's legal status and/or perceived...

A debate continues to rage between Wisconsin hunters and the Department of Natural Resources over the true number of deer in the state. Hunters have repeatedly argued the deer population is dropping. The DNR counters saying there are too many deer in Wisconsin and the agency is studying a plan to extend the deer hunting season. Now, hunters say they have the proof they need, a study that reportedly shows car-deer crashes in Wisconsin has dropped and has been dropping for years. Joe Terrien of MJ Collision Center in Bellevue has seen the numbers drop first hand. "Six years ago,...

The first thing I would do is declare a truce with Fox News. Right now, the president is spending more time launching offensives against FNC than against the Taliban. The American people want Osama bin Laden’s head on a stick, not Glenn Beck’s. What exactly does attacking FNC get the president? Plus, it’s hypocritical. Didn’t Barack Obama win the Nobel Peace Prize?

What's different about voting in Minneapolis this year? You get to rank three candidates in each election contest. That's ranked-choice voting, the system the city is launching for municipal races. So in the 11-person mayor's race, you may rank one candidate as your first choice, another as your second, and a third as your final choice. "It's a lot less confusing than it sounds once somebody explains it," Nancy Harrington, who rarely misses an election, said at an informational workshop at Webber Neighborhood Center last week. But there are some pitfalls to avoid. Think of the grid of candidates and...

Walking through the lively districts of Harajuku and Shibuya in Tokyo, one might encounter a sight unusual to many people's eyes: men in skirts. Not kilts or kimono, but skirts. Called "the skirt boys," or "skirt tribe," the skirt-wearing men of Tokyo are beginning to get some attention from the fashion world. And so, though it may be a little rude, I have to ask: How is this different from being a cross-dresser? I see my first skirt-clad man in Harajuku on a weekday afternoon, his garment made of an almost transparent white cotton, with pretty geometric designs along the...

She went out with a bang, and it's left her Bronx family fuming. Glatha Byrd's final send-off was "apocalyptic" -- as the hearse carrying her body exploded and caught fire on the Major Deegan Expressway, says family lawyer James Franzetti. John Haley was a drunken "jagoff" and "pea brain" when he pushed a fisherman into Lake Michigan as a prank, his lawyers said. But Haley didn't know Du Doan, 62, couldn't swim. After 7½ hours of deliberation, a Cook County jury apparently agreed late Friday, convicting Haley...

Soupy Sales died at age 83 yesterday. He hosted an afternoon kiddie show that reached its height of popularity in the mid-1960s. He was totally unlike other kids-show hosts of that, or any other, era. He wasn’t soft-spoken, like Mr. Rogers; he wasn’t grandfatherly, like Captain Kangaroo; he didn’t want to teach you anything, like Mr. Wizard. What Soupy was was a unique combination of silly and hip. He mixed slapstick with self-conscious irony. He was forever getting a pie thrown in his face. He talked to puppets, especially two — White Fang and Black Tooth — that were really...
