A Wuhan doctor who worked with coronavirus whistleblower Li Wenliang died of the virus on Tuesday, state media reported, becoming China's first COVID-19 fatality in weeks. Hu Weifeng, a urologist at Wuhan Central Hospital, passed away after being treated for COVID-19 and allied issues for more than four months, state broadcaster CCTV said. He is the sixth doctor from Wuhan Central Hospital to have died from the virus, which emerged in the central Chinese city late last year. Cases have dwindled dramatically from the peak in mid-February as the country appears to have brought the outbreak largely under control. The...

Republicans in the House and Senate introduced legislation this week to have the street in front of the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C., renamed Li Wenliang Plaza to honor the Wuhan-based doctor-turned-whistleblower who had early on sounded the alarm on coronavirus. “The Chinese Government attempted to silence Dr. Li Wenliang who, at great personal risk, warned about the danger of Coronavirus,” Wyoming Republican Rep. Liz Cheney said in a statement Thursday. Li was among eight doctors who were reprimanded by the Chinese government for warning people against the threat of the coronavirus. Li was later exonerated by Chinese officials.

Perhaps this looked like a better idea in theory, but in practice, it looks more like a replay of Al Capone’s vault — as owned by Joseph Stalin. Spoiler alert — despite what CNN’s chyron and description say here, CNN’s David Culver only barely spoke with the widow of Li Wenliang, the Wuhan whistleblowing doctor who tried to warn the world that China was lying about what we now call COVID-19. Beijing had him arrested and detained in December, and kept him suppressed until he died of the virus in early February. The only thing Li’s widow had to say...

A non-peer reviewed study, funded by grants from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and published this week, found that China could have prevented 95 percent of coronavirus infections if its measures to contain the outbreak had begun sooner. The research from the University of Southampton suggests that Chinese officials should have listened to the coronavirus whistleblower, Dr. Li Wenliang, when he tried to sound the alarm on December 30.

Dr. Li Wenliang was a 34-year-old ophthalmologist at Wuhan Central Hospital in China's Hubei Province who was reprimanded by the Chinese government and later died of coronavirus after he warned others about the disease in late December. The Chinese government exonerated Li and offered a “solemn apology” to his family in mid-March, more than a month after he died from the virus in early February. China exonerates doctor reprimanded for warning of virus A week after his death, Li's mother Lu Shuyun demanded an explanation from the police about his treatment, saying in an online video that her son was...

China has exonerated a doctor who was punished for warning about COVID-19 and later died of the disease. Dr Li Wenliang and seven colleagues were reprimanded in December for telling friends about the emerging coronavirus threat on social media. In an unusual admission of error, the ruling Communist Party's top disciplinary body has now revoked its earlier decision - and sent a "solemn apology" to Dr Li's family. Two police officers have been issued with "disciplinary punishments" for their role in the original incident, a report by the National Supervisory Commission said. Investigators found that Dr Li hadn't disrupted public...

Dr. Li Wenliang, the ophthalmologist who first raised the alarm about the coronavirus in China, has passed away. When he tried to warn colleagues about the disease, he was arrested by the authorities for "rumor-mongering." "We solemnly warn you: If you keep being stubborn, with such impertinence, and continue this illegal activity, you will be brought to justice — is that understood?" It is reported that he caught the disease from a patient or patients he was treating and died some days later. Do you believe this? Only about 2% of the people who contract this virus die from it....

Wuhan Central Hospital has denied that Li Wenliang — one of the eight doctors who tried to alert the public about the coronavirus when it was first emerging in Wuhan only to be reprimanded by local police — has died. “In the fight against the pneumonia epidemic of the new coronavirus infection, our hospital's ophthalmologist Li Wenliang was unfortunately infected. He is currently in critical condition and we are trying our best to resuscitate him," it said in its official Weibo account. The hospital’s statement came amid conflicting reports about whether Li had died, with some reports saying that the...
