LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — LAPD Chief Charlie Beck has just announced he’s reopening the case that resulted in accused cop killer and former officer Christopher Dorner’s termination. “I’m not doing this to appease him. I’m doing this so the community has faith in what the police department does,” Beck said in an exclusive interview Saturday with CBS2’s Pat Harvey. In a 20-page manifesto posted on Facebook, Dorner allegedly vows revenge against several former LAPD co-workers whom he claims ended his career. “This investigation has already been reviewed at multiple levels…If I have to redo something or deal with an issue...

It’s all fun and games until somebody gets slugged with a campaign sign — at least in Montana, where following the first U.S. Senate campaign debate this cycle, a Democratic activist hit one candidate’s wife with a rolled up sign. The debate at Buck’s T-4 in Big Sky, Mont., between Democratic incumbent Jon Tester, Republican challenger Montana Rep. Denny Rehberg and Libertarian Dan Cox reportedly focused on the election issues of the day: jobs, the economy and health care. The real fireworks, however, took place after the event when an attendee got into a physical altercation with Jan Rehberg, the...

Portland, OR: In a city where just about everything that can be done on a bicycle has been done, Portland still doesn't do bike sharing. Not yet anyway. After years of study, the Portland Bureau of Transportation has recommended using $4 million in startup funds -- half from a limited, flexible federal funding pot, half from private investors -- for an automated community bicycling program. The City Council is expected to vote Wednesday on the concept, which has proved wildly popular in other American cities and across Europe. "We essentially expect this to be used by everybody -- tourists, businesspeople,...

Police and fire officials are investigating an arson fire in Sandwich that has a disturbing similarity with a suspicious incident in Barnstable. In both cases, the arsonist left a calling card, the message, "(expletive) the rich" at the scene.
  • Marxist and Socialist anti-Semitism and Early Anti-Zionism

Historically, the structural and class bases of anti-Jewish feeling in Europe were inextricably linked with the ruling classes and the forces of reaction. The Catholic church propagated anti-Semitism as a matter of religious ideology as well as expediency. Landed aristocracy created the class of Jewish moneylenders, and then allied themselves with the peasants against their Jewish creditors. Reactionary regimes like the Tsarist Regime in Russia used the Jews as scapegoats for the ills of their society. [snip] Much literature and philosophy of the 19th century, especially socialist and communist literature, was permeated with anti-Semitism. Proudhon and Fourier were notorious anti-Semites....

This bill was considered in committee which has recommended it be considered by the Senate as a whole. Although it has been placed on a calendar of business, the order in which legislation is considered and voted on is determined by the majority party leadership. Keep in mind that sometimes the text of one bill is incorporated into another bill, and in those cases the original bill, as it would appear here, would seem to be abandoned.

fringeelements | July 08, 2010 The fashion is to say "economics can't explain all political issues" - which is an absurd idea based on a simplistic view of economics. Economics can explain all purposeful action toward a given goal. What of these goals and how do they come about? That's the realm of psychology. But beyond that, economic reductionism FTW. No need to speak of "social forces" independent of economics as if King Ludd is a giant cell and men are his organelles. Solving problems by breaking them down into individual actors... is good.

BEKASI, Indonesia – A banner with a picture of a young, bespectacled Christian man is draped in front of a mosque, a fiery noose around his neck and the words, "This man deserves the death penalty!" Churches are shut down. And an Islamic youth militia held its first day of training. Though the events all occurred less than nine miles (15 kilometers) from Indonesia's bustling capital, making headlines in local papers and dominating chats on social networking sites such as Facebook, they've sparked little public debate in the halls of power....

Hollywood, CA – The Survivors have released a video showing members of Jimmy Kimmel’s television crew burning a teenager with high-powered kleg lamps, then ignoring pleas that they stop hurting the youngster. The teen, Ryan Bueler, was targeted for burning because he was exercising his First Amendment right to free speech by holding an abortion sign on Hollywood Blvd. in front of the Kodak Theater where the Kimmel crew was setting up to film a stunt for the Jimmy Kimmel Live show. The video shows Survivor leader Jeff White and Operation Rescue’s Troy Newman attempting to stop the attack...

The partial sex-change operations must be fully covered by insurance premiums, as Kagan's administrators demanded they be funded as an "equal right."</p>

ATHENS, Greece - A bomb disguised as a gift exploded inside the Greek law enforcement ministry, killing a close ministerial aide in Greece's highest profile attack in years. Public Order Minister Michalis Chryssohoidis, who was in his office a few yards (meters) away from the blast, said the package had been intended for him. Pale and visibly shaken, but otherwise unharmed, he told reporters he had "lost a valuable and beloved associate." There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the Thursday night bombing, which killed police officer Giorgos Vassilakis, a 50-year-old father of two. But suspicion fell on radical...
  • Number of childless American women in their 40s has risen sharply since 1970s

Nearly one in five American women in her early 40s is childless, according to a report that shows a striking increase in women who don't have biological children. The trend was much less common in the 1970s, when one in 10 women did not have children by 40 to 44, the age bracket researchers use to designate the end of childbearing years. The report, released Friday by the Pew Research Center, cites social and cultural shifts behind the change, including less pressure to have children, better contraceptive measures and expanded job opportunities for women. Ponzi schemes rely on people falling for promises that are literally too good to be true — but the outcomes are never really in doubt for the perpetrators of these scams, are they? First they are playing with money that does not belong to them — which means they cannot lose. Also, when the scams finally unravel, the perpetrators have invariably moved on to their next group of unsuspecting victims — where the fleecing begins anew. Sound familiar? It should. This is the modus operandi of governments all over the world in our current era of Keynesian excess — an...

There's little that shouts "seriously rich" as much as a little island in the sun to call your own. For Sir Richard Branson it is Neckar in the Caribbean, the billionaire Barclay brothers prefer Brecqhou in the Channel Islands, while Aristotle Onassis married Jackie Kennedy on Skorpios, his Greek hideway. Now Greece is making it easier for the rich and famous to fulfill their dreams by preparing to sell, or offering long-term leases on, some of its 6,000 sun-kissed islands in a desperate attempt to repay its mountainous debts.
