Call it Bagelgate. The controversy involves a Larksville coffee shop, a Plymouth police officer and a $1.30 bagel. On Wednesday afternoon, witnesses say an on-duty officer in a Plymouth police sport utility vehicle held up the drive-through lane of the Curry Donuts on Route 11 waiting for a toasted bagel with a coffee he was given free. When told he had to pay for the bagel, the officer claimed he didn't have his wallet, said "If it's not free, I don't want it" and drove off. The bagel went to waste. The flap over the bagel has placed a spotlight...

Perhaps the Garden State should switch its nickname to the Barnyard State. A New Jersey judge has dismissed animal cruelty charges against a cop accused of committing a sex act with cows, saying a grand jury had no way of knowing whether the animals were "tormented." Moorestown police officer Robert Melia, who is currently suspended, allegedly stuck his penis in the mouths of five calves in Southampton in 2006. Since New Jersey currently has no law explicitly banning such an act, prosecutors in Burlington county brought animal cruelty charges against Melia, the Philadelphia Daily News reports. "If the cow had...

GLENROCK, Wyo. - A 76-year-old Wyoming man shot with a Taser by police while driving an antique tractor in a small-town parade says it hurt but he's OK. Retired truck driver Bud Grose of Glenrock told The Associated Press in a telephone interview on Wednesday that he has a heart condition but didn't require any medical attention. Investigators say police in Glenrock used a Taser on the man after he disobeyed orders. They say the tractor may have hit a car. Two officers were placed on paid leave and state agents are investigating, but the police chief says it doesn't...

Senior citizen Bud Grose was chased and tasered -- five different times -- by two Wyoming police officers on August 1. The investigation has just concluded with the firing of the two officers. The small town of Glenrock, Wyoming was shocked and horrified after one of its residents was chased and tasered by police during an annual celebration of community arts and life this past summer. It was nearing the end of the Deer Creek Days annual parade held on Aug. 1 when two officers chased and tasered senior citizen, Bud Grose. Grose was driving an antique tractor in the...

A media advisory has gone out saying that a "major Virginia organization" is going to be endorsing Bob McDonnell, Bill Bolling and Ken Cuccinelli tomorrow. WHEN: Thursday, September 24th at 9AM WHERE: House Briefing Room in the General Assembly Building in Richmond Virtucon has heard via a leak (note: not from any of these campaigns) that this will be the Fraternal Order of Police, but has yet to confirm it formally. Coming on the heels of today's Fairfax Chamber of Commerce endorsement of McDonnell, I'd hazard to say that the old winning coalition assembled by Govs. George Allen and Jim...

A white Philadelphia police officer who came to work with his hair in cornrows was ordered by a superior to get a haircut, even though black colleagues wear the same type of braids. The Philadelphia Daily News reported Monday that Officer Thomas Strain was put on desk duty earlier this month because of the hairstyle. A police spokesman, Lt. Frank Vanore, said Strain's boss didn't feel the braids were "professional."

A Philadelphia man was shot to death after trying to rob an off-duty cop Sunday, according to police. It happened around 2a.m. in the 5800 block of Catherine Streets in West Philadelphia. An off duty officer who was headed home after working the night shift at the 19th District, was approached by two men who announced they were going to rob him, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. One of the men put a gun to the officer's chest. The officer, who had his gun with him, fired one shot at the suspect who later died at the Hospital of the...

To get booted off the street, a police officer has to do something pretty serious - like shoot a suspect or be accused of brutality. But in the 35th District, which covers Logan, Olney and adjacent neighborhoods, apparently a hairdo will do it. A cop who got cornrows was ordered off the street and kept on desk duty for two days until he cut his braids off, sources said. While dozens of black officers across the city wear cornrows, Officer Thomas Strain is white. So when the five-year veteran showed up for work Sept. 3 with the traditionally black hairstyle,...

I’m not kidding, and she certainly seems determined. The mayor of Wellford, S.C. has instituted a policy banning law enforcement from chasing criminal suspects. She’s not just eliminating vehicle chases, but has banned foot pursuits as well. Maybe the mayor of Wellford has a line on a new tractor beam? Watch the video and you may get the impression she can order one online.

DEARBORN, Mich. -- A police officer who admitted taking marijuana from criminal suspects and baked it into brownies with his wife will avoid criminal charges. The police department's decision not to pursue a case against former policeman Edward Sanchez left a bad taste in the mouth of at least one city official, who vowed to investigate. "If you're a cop and you're arresting people and you're confiscating the marijuana and keeping it yourself, that's bad. That's real bad," said City Councilman Doug Thomas. Sanchez, who resigned last year from the department in this Detroit suburb, declined comment Wednesday. Police Commander...

This story ran a while back on freerepublic (May 2007), but no one posted the YouTube video that shows news anchors losing composure after hearing the 911 audio of a cop who apparently confiscated pot during an arrest, took it home, baked it, consumed it with his girlfriend, and then freaked out. Four former members of an now-disbanded Chicago police unit admitted Friday to taking part in a brazen scheme in which they barged into homes and stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from suspected drug dealers and others—once after withholding insulin from a diabetic man until he told them where to find the cash. Former police officers Bart Maka, Guadalupe Salinas, Brian Pratscher pleaded guilty to felony theft, and former officer Donovan Markiewicz pleaded guilty to official misconduct, in deals that called for each to be sentenced to six months in jail and various terms of probation in exchange for their...

(snip) National interest in the Weather Underground was revived during last year’s presidential campaign, when Republicans and conservative bloggers tried to smear Barack Obama for his ties to the group’s former leaders, Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn. A married couple now comfortably ensconced in the ranks of Chicago’s liberal intelligentsia, Ayers and Dohrn were early political patrons of Obama’s, hosting a campaign event for the future president in 1995 when he ran for the Illinois state Senate. Ayers and Dohrn assert today that the group deliberately avoided killing people in a campaign of “symbolic” bombings of empty government buildings. They...

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Charleston Mayor Danny Jones revealed at a Sunday evening news conference that "there's every reason to believe" friendly fire killed Patrolman Jerry Jones. Patrolman Jones was shot and killed during a chase that ended in the Quick area of Kanawha County after 1 a.m. Sunday morning. 104 Agents, basically the size of a military company (100 men) and these guys just can not seem to maintain control over their weapons. Their patrol rifles are stolen, their pistols are stolen and when directed to secure them with handcuffs, an agent shoots himself when he triggerlocks a loaded pistol. Really, these guys qualify for the Gomer Battalion in any Army in the world.

GLENROCK, Wyo. — Bud Grose seemed like the last person who should attract the attention of police when the 76-year-old retiree hopped on his antique tractor and rumbled through the annual parade in this small Wyoming town. The incident nearly incited a riot as outraged neighbors rushed to his defense. Now residents of this tight-knit town of 2,400 are seething over what they see as police brutality,...

Cheeks told the protester he would charge him with trespassing (of all things) if he didn't take down the sign because it had a picture on it. The protester didn't back down, saying, "This is America. This used to be America." Officer...

Yes, it’s another episode of “Name That Party,” where our contestant is a criminal Democrat in the news that somehow, mysteriously finds the Old Media conveniently forgetting to mention that he is, indeed, a Democrat. This time it’s former Starr County, Texas Sheriff Reymundo Guerra who was handed a five-year sentence for drug trafficking this week. Guerra is the second Starr County Sheriff in a row to go to jail for corruption. The Old Media dutifully reported this conviction, to be sure. It was reported that Guerra was up on harsher charges, how he had those reduced, it was also...

A 52-year-old former police officer was arrested after police said he tried to pass himself off as a high school student. Police said Christopher Schildt, 52, a retired police officer, gained access to Waterford High School Thursday morning. They said Schildt tried to pass himself off as an 18-year-old student and sat in a class. School officials said they thought Schildt, who looks youthful for his age, was a transfer student from Florida. Schildt told school officials he was registering his 18-year-old nephew, who had the same name and the alleged teen had medical issues and would appear older.

Lots of outrageously outraged e-mails flowing in about this, although it’s interesting to me mainly as a First Amendment curio. The footage comes from Jim Moran’s health-care town hall on Tuesday night. The question: Can a congressman bar signs, or certain types of signs, from an event at which he’s speaking? The answer (and the ambiguity) turns, I assume, on whether the event is “public” or “private.” It’s a public school and Moran is very much a public official, but recall that Claire McCaskill evidently got away with imposing a “no signs” policy at her own town hall where the...
