EAST CARBON, Carbon County — A Utah coal company owned by a vocal critic of President Barack Obama has laid off 102 miners. The layoffs at the West Ridge Mine are effective immediately, according to UtahAmerican Energy Inc., a subsidiary of Murray Energy Corp. They were announced in a short statement made public Thursday, two days after Obama won re-election. The layoffs are necessary because of the president's "war on coal," the statement said. Advanced Micro Devices Inc. ( AMD ) has eliminated approximately 400 jobs from its Austin workforce in order to reduce operational costs. TE Connectivity, which makes electrical connectors for appliances and other devices, will close its factory in north High Point and eliminate 620 jobs, according to a company official. The closure and layoffs will happen in phases through the end of 2013, said Tom Peacock, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania-based firm said. A global wind company with offices in the Pacific Northwest has announced more layoffs. Vestas says it will cut an additional 3,000 jobs by the end of 2013. The Congressional Budget Office offered a sobering assessment of the economic implications of plunging off the fiscal cliff Thursday, just as lawmakers prepare for a fight over taxes and spending. Research in Motion yesterday laid off about 200 people at its U.S. headquarters in Irving, Texas, the Dallas Morning News is reporting. RIM confirmed that there were layoffs in Irving, the story says, but would not say how many jobs were cut. Seventy five of those positions were eliminated in its two San Fernando Valley facilities – one on Canoga Avenue in Canoga Park, and the other at DeSoto Avenue and Nordhoff Street in Chatsworth.
