BEIJING (Reuters) - Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Wednesday warned major powers against intimidating Iran and said that talk of sanctions against the Islamic Republic was "premature". "There is no need to frighten the Iranians," Putin told reporters in Beijing. "We need to look for a compromise. If a compromise is not found, and the discussions end in a fiasco, then we will see," he said, adding that talks of sanctions was "premature" at present.

On both its news and opinion programming Monday, the Fox News Channel responded to the White House’s portrayal of the network as a part of the political opposition. The commentator Glenn Beck was the most judgmental, claiming at the beginning of his opinion show that “they’re more worried about the war on Fox than the actual war in Afghanistan.” Mr. Beck then whipped out a map of Manhattan and circled Fox’s headquarters, sarcastically calling Fox “the enemy” as he surrounded the spot on the map with toy tanks and barbed wire. Later, he suggested that the White House was using...

The gay community should stop rewarding President Obama's pretty speeches—like his address this weekend to the Human Rights Campaign—and demand action on Don't Ask, Don't Tell. BY MEGHAN MCCAIN This weekend, thousands gathered for a march at the White House where the gay community demanded equal rights. On Saturday night, President Obama addressed the largest gay-rights group and promised to end the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy in the military, emphasizing that his commitment to achieving equal rights was “unwavering.” The support he received from the crowd was overwhelming. But my response to this speech and my message to the...

HRC calls itself the "nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization" in the country. This weekend's event, the 13th Annual National Dinner for HRC, will be held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. HRC expects more than 3,000 attendees. Also on the program line-up is the presentation of the Edward M. Kennedy National Leadership Award, a newly created distinction named in honor of the...

Two items on the continuing (un)safe school czar scandal: Zombie investigates Kevin Jennings’ inspiration, NAMBLA enthusiast Harry Hay and concludes: I have been unable to find information about any NAMBLA conference which Harry Hay didn’t attend. I don’t know what it takes to be considered “in NAMBLA” or a “NAMBLA member,” but someone who makes appearances at and gives speeches at every known NAMBLA conference, and who speaks out publicly in NAMBLA’s defense, and who writes blurbs for NAMBLA books, would seem to be a likely candidate. Jeffrey Lord at the American Spectator widens the lens with “Pelosi to Polanski...

Why did Lady Gaga and Kanye West call off their joint tour? Still no solid answers, but maybe she was just trading up: On Saturday, it turns out, Gaga will share a stage with none other than President Obama at the annual Human Rights Campaign dinner. The White House confirmed Monday that Obama will keynote the gathering of the national's largest gay and lesbian advocacy organization -- only the second time a sitting president has addressed the HRC (after Bill Clinton in 1997), and the first time a sitting president has headlined with the pantless phenom best known for coining...

What is clear from the record going back over nearly four decades is that White House science czar John Holdren is a climate alarmist, even if he can't make up his mind whether the crisis is the Earth warming up or cooling down. But long before Holdren was the global warming Cassandra he is today, he was a global cooling alarmist predicting a new ice age. The only consistency seems to be that Holdren has always utilized climate hysteria to argue that government must mandate public policy measures to prevent imminent and otherwise unavoidable climate catastrophes. In the 1970s, Holdren's...

Even though Obama's popularity has been sliding significantly, Shepard Fairey, designer of the viral blue-and-red Manifest Hope poster, thinks it's the perfect time to release a slick and comprehensive anthology of celebratory Obama-related artworks: Art for Obama, which he co-edited with Evolutionary Media Group founder Jennifer Gross, comes out October 2. In addition to getting a look at the imagery, we spoke with Fairey about Obama's approval ratings, how political art reaches beyond politics, and his thoughts on the artistic deification of our leader.Watch the Slideshow Siegel: Tell us about the idea behind Art for Obama. WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama will focus "at the right time" on how to overturn the "don't ask, don't tell" ban on gays serving openly in the military, his national security adviser said Sunday. "I don't think it's going to be — it's not years, but I think it will be teed up appropriately," James Jones said. The Democratic-led Congress is considering repealing the 1993 law. Action isn't expected on the issue until early next year.

The Obama administration isn't adequately vetting important presidential appointees. When it was exposed that former "green jobs czar" Van Jones believed in crazy conspiracies about the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, it was questionable whether anyone had even bothered to Google individuals before they received presidential appointments. In that case, the White House strategy was to refuse to answer questions and hope interest faded away. That approach worked for most of the media, which carried water for President Obama's scandal-plagued pick. Stonewalling scandal is not what Americans were expecting from an administration that promised to usher in an "unprecedented level...

New orders to U.S. factories fell in August by the largest amount in five months, as American manufacturers struggle to emerge from the recession. The Commerce Department said Friday that demand for manufactured goods dropped 0.8 percent, much worse than the 0.7 percent gain that economists had expected. The August decline reflected plunging demand for commercial aircraft, a category that surged in July.

Famous political journalist says Obama's legitimacy attacked just like what was done to Israeli PM before his assassination. "I hate to write about this, but I have actually been to this play before and it is really disturbing," New York Times political journalist Thomas L. Friedman, writes in a column published Wednesday, comparing between the hostile atmosphere in Israel before former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin's murder and the current atmosphere in the United States in terms of smears directed at President Barack Obama. "I was in Israel interviewing Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin just before he was assassinated in 1995," Friedman...

The US Senate on Thursday rejected an attempt by Republican Senator John McCain to have the top US commander in Afghanistan testify before President Barack Obama announces his decision on a new Afghan war strategy. Lawmakers voted 59 to 40 to reject the McCain amendment, which called for General Stanley McChrystal and others to testify before Congress about the direction of the war in Afghanistan by November 15. "Unfortunately, now Congress must rely on news outlets for access to our military leaders," McCain said in a statement. Besides McChrystal, the McCain measure called for testimony by General David Petraeus, the...

Kevin Jennings, President Obama's Assistant Deputy Secretary of the Office of Safe and Drug FreeSchools at the U.S. Department of Education, is in hot water this week for having failed to report that a 15-year-old sophomore student in his school had told him of having sex with an older man. I see that Rush Limbaugh is buying into the the thinly sourced “Bill Ayers wrote Obama’s first memoir” conspiracy theory, helping push this from the fringe to the conservative mainstream. (Limbaugh’s birther jokes were pivotal in pushing that weirdness into the culture.) There are people who can act holier-than-thou about ghostwriters. Rush Limbaugh is not one of them. His first book, “The Way Things Ought to Be,” was famously written by John Fund of The Wall Street Journal. His second book was ghostwritten by Joseph Farah, who then became editor-in-chief of WorldNetDaily. And to complete the circle, WND has been...

Thomas Sowell says even many conservatives believe that Barack Obama is smart, but he goes on to make the clearly relevant point that, hey, Adolph Hitler was smart too. “His underlying beliefs may have been half-baked and his hatreds overwhelming, but he was a political genius when it came to carrying out his plans based on those beliefs and hatreds,” writes Sowell. Juan Peron, the Argentine dictator, was also smart, says Sowell, before going on to make the implicit explicit: “Someone recently pointed out how much Barack Obama’s style and strategies resemble those of Latin American charismatic despots — the...

A senior official of the Department of Education expressed regret today for an incident that happened when he was a young teacher in the late 1980s, saying he should have handled it differently, but that society could benefit from his error. Kevin Jennings, director of the Department of Education’s Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools and founder of the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), has been criticized by social conservatives for a passage in his 1994 book “One Teacher In Ten.” At the time, only a few people knew that Jennings, then a 24-year-old teacher at Concord...

A historic bridge at Bill Clinton's presidential center in Little Rock is slated to get $2.5 million of federal stimulus money from Arkansas's share of the funds. Most of the stimulus cash going to states is designated for particular needs, such as Medicaid or schools, but about $8.8 billion distributed through the Government Services Fund is for governors to use as they see fit. Many states have added the bulk of this money to education or police budgets and, in a few cases, initiatives such as tax relief for senior citizens or incentives for the film industry.

The United States should find a way to collaborate with Russia in establishment of missile defenses, U.S. President Barack Obama said yesterday (see GSN, Sept. 29). "We want to improve generally not only U.S.-Russian relations, but also NATO-Russian relations, while making absolutely clear that our commitments to all of our allies in NATO is sacrosanct," the president added, according to Agence...

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — President Barack Obama's administration put the brakes on 79 applications for surface coal mining permits in four states Wednesday, saying they would violate the Clean Water Act. The action is the administration's latest attempt to curb environmental damage from a highly efficient but damaging mining practice known as mountaintop removal. Each permit likely would cause significant damage to water quality and the environment, the Environmental Protection Agency said in a statement.

WASHINGTON — The top American commander in Iraq on Wednesday warned Congress against losing sight of that nation as a key Mideast ally, even as safer conditions have let him send home more U.S. troops faster than expected. Army Gen. U.S. President Barack Obama announced a plan on Wednesday to spend $5 billion to create new jobs for medical and scientific research, medical supplies and improved laboratory capacity. The funds, to come from the $787 billion economic stimulus package, will pay for "cutting-edge medical research in every state across America," the White House said in a statement. "We know that this kind of investment will also lead to new jobs: tens of thousands of jobs conducting research, manufacturing and supplying medical equipment, and building and modernizing laboratories and research facilities," Obama said in a statement.

Story Snafus President Obama used not one, but two faulty anecdotes during his health care speech to Congress earlier this month. Republican Congressman Joe Barton fought the insurance company until it restored coverage, allowing Beaton to get the surgery she needed. The Associated Press writes: "Beaton's case is just one...

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration, while skeptical of an early breakthrough in nuclear talks with Iran, indicated Tuesday it does not intend to swiftly press for stiffer economic sanctions. In advance of six-nation talks with Iran on Thursday in Geneva, the State Department stressed its hope that the session would open the door to more in-depth dialogue about ways Iran could alleviate concerns that its emerging nuclear program may be secretly developing nuclear weapons.

Let me say it again – I don't trust Barack Obama, and neither should you. And it has nothing to do with the color of his skin. How can we trust a commander in chief who values playing basketball more than he does giving immediate and full attention to his general's desperate plea for more troops? What other president, Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro notwithstanding, has publicly threatened and bullied privately owned companies in his own country for providing accurate information pursuant to what his proposed measures will truly mean for their clients? Obama promised that his administration would be...

Singer Andy Williams was a friend of Bobby Kennedy, but Williams is no fan of President Obama. “Don’t like him at all,” Williams told the London Telegraph. “I think he wants to create a socialist country. He wants the country to fail.” Prediction: Sales of Williams’s material will soar. Sing it, Andy.

WASHINGTON — NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said he agreed with a grim assessment of the war in Afghanistan by the US commander there but stopped short of calling for more troops. Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf said Monday that the U.S. would make a "disastrous" mistake if it withdrew from Afghanistan and warned that a delay in sending more troops would be seen as a sign of weakness. Mr. Musharraf also denied that Pakistan's elite Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) was giving secret support to the Taliban, which the ISI helped build in the 1980s to confront the Soviet Union. Asked by reporters and editors at The Washington Times whether the U.S. and its allies might be seen as weak because of the prolonged debate over whether to send more forces to Afghanistan,...

In an official proclamation this afternoon, President Obama declared today Family Day 2009. What is significant is the way he defined "family." The president gave a nod to the gay community when he praised all families, "whether children are raised by two parents, a single parent, grandparents, a same-sex couple, or a guardian." (Emphasis ours.) His shout-out to same-sex couples is sure to draw heat from some social conservatives. Interestingly, it has been met with some hostility from gay rights activists too. One commenter on gay blogger Pam Spaulding's website called today's statement "honeyed words, easy to say." "Mr. President,"...

Far be it for me to play armchair shrink here, but the more I see how the modern leftist mind works, the more I am convinced that there is a very real mental disorder in play. He says: "The Honolulu Advertiser reported yesterday that Okubo and her boss, Chiyome Fukino, both confirm that Obama’s original birth certificate still exists. Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) accidentally walked into the world of “birther” conspiracy theories last month, when a local newspaper seemed to report that Franks was considering a lawsuit against the president. Franks cleared the matter up immediately: He had merely considered suing for proof of the president’s citizenship before and after the 2008 election, but balked after becoming convinced that the president was born in America. At the How to Take Back America Conference in St. Louis, I talked to Franks and asked if he wanted to clear the air on the whole controversy. He jumped at the chance, explaining...

Last Friday, I moderated an issues forum for Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. during the Congressional Black Caucus's annual legislative conference. At the beginning of the program, an adorable group of grade school students with matching uniforms walked to the front of the room in the Washington Convention Center and performed three songs about President Obama. The audience loved it. Parents and adults whipped out their cell phones and video cameras to capture the moment. For once, it seemed that America's black youth were being inspired about their government and their own futures. It was a beautiful moment. The next day...

Those of us who have wondered if this President is loyal to the United States are about to get an answer. Actually, those of us who have had the luxury of time to pay close attention have known the answer for some time. But now, busy, everyday Americans will too. The President’s decision on Afghanistan will be a “defining moment,” but not the kind our Marxist president seeks. For, in this, as in Obamacare, all shall know him. This President does not believe America is the last, best hope of the world. Nor does he believe that America, without him...
