FRANKFORT -- Candidates for governor and other statewide constitutional offices have raised more than $11.4 million and spent more than $6.8 million, according to new campaign finance reports. Those running for offices other than governor filed their first campaign finance reports of the season this week. Gubernatorial candidates have until Friday to file an updated batch of reports with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance. The primary election is May 20. <p>The political arm of the Kentucky Right to Life Association, the state's leading anti-abortion group, has endorsed Republican Ernie Fletcher and Democrat Jody Richards for governor in the May 20 primary election.</p>
<p>The endorsement could be a greater boost for Richards, who has trailed in fund-raising and polls in his Democratic race with Attorney General Ben Chandler and businessman Bruce Lunsford.</p>

Northern Kentucky Republican Trey Grayson has raised more money than all three Democrats running for secretary of state in the most recent campaign finance period, according to reports released on Thursday. Grayson, however, still trails Democrat Russ Maple, a Jefferson County insurance executive seeking the office, by more than $200,000 in total contributions. Kenton County Commissioner Adam Koenig, a Republican running for state treasurer, is looking at an even larger gap between himself and his opponent. <p>Former Kentucky Attorney General Fred Cowan said yesterday that he's running for the U.S. Senate seat held by Jim Bunning, a Republican in his first term.</p>
<p>Cowan, a Louisville lawyer and the first Democrat to enter the 2004 race, declined to say why he is running. ''We will have an announcement later and discuss all those kinds of things,'' he said.</p>

<p>FRANKFORT, Ky. -- The federal prosecutor who played a leading role in an investigation of corruption in the General Assembly became Ernie Fletcher's new running mate today.</p>
<p>Stephen B. Pence, who last week resigned as U.S. attorney for the western half of Kentucky, was registered on Fletcher's Republican slate, according to forms filed with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance. The two candidates planned a joint news conference Monday morning in Lexington.</p>

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. Mitch McConnell underwent triple heart bypass surgery Monday because of some blocked arteries. A statement from his office described the operation as a success and said the Kentucky Republican -- who turns 61 in about three weeks -- should make a full recovery.
