Only 100 people were listening, but the first broadcast from a licensed radio station occurred at 8 p.m. on Nov. 2, 1920. It was Pittsburgh’s KDKA, and the station was broadcasting the results of that year’s presidential election. When the man responsible, Frank Conrad, flipped the switch for the first time, he couldn’t have envisioned just how profoundly broadcast media would transform political life. For centuries, people had read politicians’ words. But radio made it possible to listen to them in real time. Politicians’ personalities all of a sudden started to matter more. The way their voices sounded made more...

A Pittsburgh radio station is again under scrutiny after one of its reporters called Department of Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine, a transgender woman, “sir” at least three times during a Tuesday press call. The incident happened while KDKA-AM personality Marty Griffin was asking a question about what the state’s “end game” is for reopening after the coronavirus, according to the Pennsylvania Capital-Star. A Pittsburgh City Paper transcript shows Griffin called Levine “sir” in both his initial question and follow-up, leading her to tell him “please don’t misgender me,” and that it was “really insulting.” Griffin later apologized on Twitter...

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Local social media is abuzz over efforts in Pittsburgh to identify and boycott businesses owned by supporters of President Donald Trump. “I think it’s important because people have a right to know where their money is going,” Pittsburgh blogger Brian Broome told KDKA political editor Jon Delano on Tuesday. In a recent Facebook post, a page identified only as “Ban Kenny Chesney from Pittsburgh” says there’s a list of almost 100 local businesses owned by Trump supporters which will soon be disclosed on a new website.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — It’s the latest chapter of the Jesse White saga. He’s the local state representative who admitted to using online aliases to bully constituents. KD Investigator Andy Sheehan broke the story, and now it’s taking a bizarre twist. White concedes he did it; used fake names to attack people on the Internet. But of the half dozen or so aliases used to post his attacks, the most disturbing one is Victoria Adams. A beautiful young woman whose fake Facebook profile said she resided in Pittsburgh, Pa. But until recently, there were only three people named Victoria Adams in...

The most memorable moment for local talk show host Fred Honsberger involved an elderly woman named Grace, Hillary Clinton and a turkey gobble. It was around Thanksgiving, and Honsberger had decided to give away turkeys to his KDKA listeners by playing turkey-gobble sound bites between calls. When caller Grace decided to begin a tirade about how the conservative Honsberger should lay off his criticisms of then-First Lady Hillary Clinton, he inserted a gobble sound into her diatribe. After only a brief pause, she continued with her "blah, blah, blah," Honsberger said, so he played the gobble again. Her response: "I...

Talk radio isn't exactly known for its lack of bias, but during yesterday's Kevin Miller show on KDKA-AM (1020), the concept of fairness appeared to have won a skirmish. In a segment that could have been either stunt or statement, KDKA executive producer P.J. Kumanchik read an announcement from CBS management addressing accusations that talk host Miller, whose show airs from noon to 3 p.m., is unfairly biased against Sen. Barack Obama's campaign. Citing a number of e-mails and phone calls from listeners criticizing Miller, Kumanchik offered Democratic presidential candidate Obama a three-hour air shift, usurping Miller's air time....

PITTSBURGH — A newspaper reporter who said Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick would have been "better off raping a woman" than being charged with dogfighting has apologized and will no longer appear on the local sports panel TV show where he made the remark. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Paul Zeise made the comments Sunday night on the "Sports Showdown" show on KDKA-TV, a CBS affiliate. He was disagreeing with another panelist who said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell should suspend Vick for the rest of the season because he was indicted on federal dogfighting charges July 17. "It's really a sad day...
