A week from now, 81-year-old Kansan Robert Baker will be cruising near the border in Arizona in his four-wheel drive vehicle. He’ll have a handgun, a rifle, a shotgun and lots of pepper spray, plus a two-way radio. When he spots people he thinks are illegal “border jumpers,” he’ll alert his fellow Minuteman Civil Defense Corps members. They’ll call federal Border Patrol agents, who will probably respond and detain the illegal immigrants. Baker and his group find themselves in the middle of a Kansas City debate that is beginning to go national: Just what does it mean to be a...

Enough is enough. Mayor Mark Funkhouser must swallow his pride and remove Frances Semler from Kansas City’s Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners. As mayor, it is his responsibility to look out for the interests of the entire city. Driving away tourists and major conventions is not fiscally responsible, clear-headed thinking.

Jessica, a Kansas City police officer, is 6 feet tall with a chin dimple, pink manicured fingernails and a birth certificate that says “male.” But in her mind, Jessica believes she has always been a female. She legally changed her name from David to Jessica last year. And in January, she gained the right to dress as a woman at work. She asked co-workers to refer to her in female pronouns, like “she” and “her.” She started hormone therapy and removed most of her body hair with laser surgery, but she hasn’t had a sex-change operation, known as gender reassignment...

Grassroots Americans of all parties and economic classes rose up out of their political apathy a few months ago and forced President Bush to reverse his administration's decision to allow a Middle East government to own America's major ports. But the push for foreign ownership continues: the next port scheduled to be taken over is Kansas City, Missouri. Even though public schools stopped teaching geography a couple of decades ago, most Americans (especially residents of the Show Me state) are surprised to learn that Kansas City (where the only waves are "amber waves of grain") is a port. We are...

You didn't have to believe in omens to find it a bit odd that on the subway ride toward Mellon Arena yesterday, "I'm gettin' nuttin' for Christmas" seemed to be squawking in a continuous loop. This was right at the top of zero hour, when the long-awaited, viciously anticipated casino licensing issue would finally be decided. Twenty minutes later, the Penguins had begun practice on the NHL's oldest living hockey pond, and at precisely 11:27 a.m., the franchise learned it was indeed getting nothing for Christmas. Oh yeah, mommy and daddy are mad, the NHL is mad, even the Rooneys...

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A mother has been arrested on charges that she gave crack to her 4-year-old son to "calm him down." Michelle R. Shelton, 32, of Kansas City, was arrested Thursday on a child endangerment charge. Police said the boy did not suffer any obvious injuries from taking the highly addictive drug. He remains in state custody. Police first began investigating Shelton a year ago when officers said they saw her escorting drug users into the apartment complex where she and her son lived. Police said some residents at the complex told investigators Shelton sometimes gave the boy...

Jose Lima rejoined the Kansas City Royals (news) when he agreed to a one-year contract Saturday, hoping to provide stability and leadership to a rotation that was awful last season.
