I don't think these people are "totally illogical." Look at the situation from their perspective. In the 16th and 17th centuries Muslims were crashing the gates of Europe and it was possible they would defeat Christendom and absorb Western and Central Europe. Then began four centuries of decline, culminating in the breakup of the Ottoman Empire after WWI, the abolition of the Caliphate and the colonization of most of the Middle East by Western powers. They managed to free themselves from the colonial powers only to see the establishment of Israel, a permanent Western state in the heart of the Middle East. Even after independence the West became so technologically and economically advanced there was no chance of regaining military parity, as witnessed by three defeats of numerically superior Arab armies by Israel.

Terrorism and guerrilla warfare is the only way for radicalized, anti-Western Muslims to fight back.

We need to stop deluding ourselves that this is irrational behavior or has some basis in economic conditions and focus on defeating the threat. That needs to be a twofold approach, defeating the threat with military, intelligence and law enforcement assets, and forming a strategy to integrate the Muslim world into the now global civilization and economy that the West created.
