On February 25th a group of eleven renowned law professors from around the country sent a letter to Arizona Governor Jan Brewer (R) warning that SB1062—the bill "which amends Arizona's Religious Freedom Restoration Act" (RFRA)—has been "egregiously misrepresented by many of its critics." The mix of eleven professors consists of Republicans and Democrats, religious and non-religious, "some...[who] oppose same-sex marriage [and] some... who support it." Their letter was obtained exclusively by Breitbart News ahead of its public release.Their letter focuses on the important role RFRA plays in "[enacting] a uniform standard to be interpreted and applied to individual cases." And...

Call it what you want -- anti-gay or religious rights -- but if Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signs a controversial bill, you might not be calling Arizona the home of the 2015 Super Bowl. The Religious Freedom Restoration Act, S.B. 1062, is the current controversy du jour out of Arizona, and the National Football League is with the opposition. “Our policies emphasize tolerance and inclusiveness and prohibit discrimination based on age, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation or any other improper standard,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told USA Today. “We are following the issue in Arizona and will continue to do...

A bill that would allow businesses to refuse service to customers based on personal, religious beliefs is now on the desk of Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, as protests continue. The state legislature passed the bill late Thursday, but not without a fiery debate. "This is simply protecting religious freedom that is recognized and defended and supported in the First Amendment that the founders wanted, nothing else," said Republican Rep. Eddie Farnsworth, who sponsored the bill. "There's only type of equality," said House Minority Leader Chad Campbell, a Democrat. "And it's equal." Brewer, a Republican, vetoed a similar bill last year...

Friends, With the federal government shutdown, this has been a difficult week for all Americans. Furthermore, the Obama administration’s unwillingness to negotiate is frustrating to all of us who would like to see meaningful change in Washington. While I am disappointed by the actions of Harry Reid and President Obama, I was shocked to learn that veterans had been denied access to the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C. Our veterans deserve better than this! It’s time to send a message to the Democrats in Washington that this sort of political gamesmanship is unacceptable. It is disturbing to note that President...

Arizona's top politicians blasted the Obama administration and federal officials over the denial of aid in the wake of the state's deadly wildfire. The Yarnell Hill blaze killed 19 firefighters, called "hotshots," in late June, when it changed directions and engulfed them. The Federal Emergency Management Agency denied the state's request for assistance based on insurance rules, it said in a statement Friday. It determined that not enough uninsured private individuals had become victims to warrant a payout. Republican Gov. Jan Brewer directed her criticism directly at the president. "I am deeply troubled by the Obama administration's decision to deny...

Ready for the kicker? Discussing #immigration and why border security MUST come first on this issue in 25 minutes on @FoxNews #AZ #tcot— Jan Brewer (@GovBrewer) June 24, 2013 Stupidity or something worse? Border security doesn’t “come first†in the Gang of Eight bill, of course; it comes before green-card eligibility but after probationary legalization, which is why Rand Paul, for instance, can’t support it. Illegals are granted a legal claim to staying here before anything happens on the border. Which leaves three possibilities. One: Brewer’s confused about what the bill says. That seems … doubtful. She’s the governor of...

Once considered a conservative governor due to signing SB 1070, which toughened up illegal immigration laws, Arizona’s Governor Jan Brewer has now destroyed that reputation. Last week, she called a surprise special session of the legislature, and allying with Democrats, bullied through Obamacare's massive expansion of Medicaid, known as AHCCCS in Arizona. The bullying tactics she used to coerce Republican legislators into voting for it were so appalling, they made national news and have prominent Republicans all over the state speaking out in outrage. Brewer called legislators into the State Capitol at 5 p.m. last Tuesday, and kept them there...

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer muscled her way to victory in her crusade for Medicaid expansion Thursday, outmaneuvering conservative opposition to push through a key piece of President Barack Obama’s agenda. She not only supported the Medicaid expansion, but took extraordinary measures to push for its passage. Brewer crisscross(ed) the state to promote expansion and shame detractors. This month she started vetoing a stream of unrelated bills to pry her top priority loose from Republicans, and she brought them back into special session. A coalition of moderate Republicans and Democrats sent Brewer a bill on Thursday extending Medicaid to an estimated...

Another one bites the dust. — and largely thanks to a governor who, once upon a time, was an outspoken opponent of ObamaCare. Per Politico: Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer muscled her way to victory in her crusade for Medicaid expansion Thursday, outmaneuvering conservative opposition to push through a key piece of President Barack Obama’s agenda.Over the objection of Republican legislative leaders, a coalition of moderate Republicans and Democrats sent Brewer a bill on Thursday extending Medicaid to an estimated 300,000 low-income uninsured Arizonans, transforming the state into the unlikeliest of Obamacare allies at a critical time for the White House.The...

When last we saw Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, she was vetoing every piece of legislation the Republican controlled legislature passed until they agreed to her budget which included expanding Medicaid under ObamaCare. Since that didn't work she's now doing an end run around the GOP majorities in the legislature to pass the state's ObamaCare plan. Fed up with weeks of debate and delay on her top legislative priority, Gov. Jan Brewer called lawmakers into an unprecedented special session late Tuesday, bypassing the leadership of her own party to push through Medicaid expansion and the 2014 budget. The governor’s surprise move comes...

Jan Brewer’s eagerness to impose new taxes to help the Obama administration finance its expansion of the welfare state has gone from unwise to unseemly: The Republican governor of Arizona is attempting to force the Republican-led state legislature to expand Medicaid and is threatening to veto all legislation until she is satisfied. She is calling her gambit a “moratorium” on legislation, and she already has vetoed five unrelated bills. This is conduct unbecoming of a chief executive. Governor Brewer’s desire to expand Medicaid is predicated on a particular kind of economic illiteracy – to wit, the belief that there is...

Gov. Jan Brewer and former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin put their best feet forward Saturday afternoon in an effort tackle one of Arizona's biggest issues. "We're here highlighting the problem of child abuse and doing all that we can to strike it out," said Palin. However, Saturday's conversation wasn't just about protecting our children. It was also about protecting our border. This week immigrants living in this country illegally will likely find out what they need to do to become U.S. citizens. Lawmakers are days away from announcing details of the most sweeping immigration reform bill this country's seen...

Former Tucson lawmaker Terri Proud, who was just hired by the state Veterans' Services Department, was fired Wednesday in the wake of her statement in a news story that menstrual cycles might be too problematic for women to be in combat. The department director who hired her has resigned. Joey Strickland submitted his resignation letter on Tuesday, shortly after the Arizona Sonora News Service story on Proud appeared in the Star. Proud was a personal appointee of Strickland's to the $40,000 administrative assistant position and didn't go through a formal hiring process. She was terminated Wednesday, before she even officially...

Two years after it passed, and after partially surviving an Obama administration court challenge, Arizona's tough immigration law took effect Tuesday. "Today is truly an important day for Arizona and supporters of the rule of law," Gov. Jan Brewer said in a statement saying that state and local police will now begin enforcing the law. Earlier this year the Supreme Court upheld the law's key provision that allows police to question the legal status of those they believe to be in the U.S. illegally...

Full title Federal judge OKs section of Arizona immigration law allowing police to question status of suspected illegalsPHOENIX – A federal judge ruled Wednesday that Arizona authorities can enforce the most contentious section of the state's immigration law, which critics have dubbed the "show me your papers" provision. The ruling by U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton clears the way for police to carry out the 2010 law's requirement that officers, while enforcing other laws, question the immigration status of those they suspect are in the country illegally. In a very subtle move, instead of covering the speech given by Puerto Rican Governor Luis Fortuno Wednesday night at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, MSNBC interviewed Arizona Governor Jan Brewer. MSNBC has vilified Brewer for her tough stances against illegal immigration and has painted her as anti-Hispanic. Fox News covered the speech briefly, but interviewed Chris Christie for the majority of the time. Fox News however, hasn't painted Jan Brewer as racist and anti-Hispanic, etiher. To be fair, Brewer should have declined an interview with MSNBC during Fortuno's speech but, they set her up.

Governor Jan Brewer has put the kibosh on Barack Obama’s unconstitutional, Dream Act “end run” around the US Congress by signing an executive order which will keep an estimated 80,000 illegal aliens off of Arizona welfare rolls. In June, Barack Obama directed the U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS)—a division of Homeland Security–to provide illegal aliens the means of deferring federal deportation orders. With this Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, the president allows illegals who claim to have come to the United States as children to both avoid deportation and apply for US work permits in their state of...

Rule of Law: Arizona finds itself in more hot water with the left, declining to give state benefits to illegal aliens whose deportations have been stayed as a political favor by the White House. Tell us again what "illegal" means? On Thursday, Governor Jan Brewer enraged the White House, the ACLU and open-borders activists by issuing Executive Order 2012-06, stating that her state reaffirmed the intent of Arizona law on state benefits — from driver's licenses to in-state college tuition — to illegals, which is a big fat "no" to all of the above. That was in response to the...

PHOENIX - Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on Wednesday ordered state agencies to deny driver's licenses and other public benefits to young illegal immigrants who obtain work authorizations under a new Obama administration policy. In an executive order, Brewer said she was reaffirming the intent of current Arizona law denying taxpayer-funded public benefits and state identification to illegal immigrants. Young illegal immigrants around the nation on Wednesday began the process of applying for federal work permits under the Obama administration's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. The federal policy defers deportations for that group if they meet certain criteria, including arrival in...
