PHOENIX — Arizona's top elected officials, both Republicans, are not going to join the lawsuit filed by Democrat officials in some states challenging the addition of a citizenship question to the 2020 census even though it could mean that Arizona won't get its fair share of federal dollars and political representation. Daniel Scarpinato, press aide to Gov. Doug Ducey, said his boss is opposed to more lawsuits. "And he supports having accurate statistical information,'' Scarpinato said. Attorney General Mark Brnovich also has no interest in Arizona becoming one of the 17 states, seven cities and the U.S. Conference of Mayors...

WASHINGTON: The US Commerce Department has recommended that President Donald Trump impose steep curbs on steel and aluminium imports from China and other countries ranging from global and country-specific tariffs to broad import quotas, according to proposals released on Friday. China’s Commerce Ministry responded by saying the report was “baseless” and did not accord with the facts, and that China would take necessary steps to protects its interests if the final decision affects China. So while this article itself is old, the issue is not. In the Mass Legislature HB 388 is a real bill that would give illegal immigrants the right to vote in local elections. Here are the Democrats listed as Co-Sponsors - there are probably more Democrats that support this bill but are not co-sponsors. Rep. Byron Rushing [D] Rep. Denise Provost [D] Rep. David Rogers [D] Rep. Daniel Donahue [D] Rep. Marjorie Decker [D] Rep. Jose Tosado [D] Rep. Michelle Dubois [D] Rep. Kay Khan [D] Sen. James Eldridge [D] Rep. Carlos Gonzalez [D] Rep. Article II of the Constitution gives states broad authority to decide how their electoral votes are selected and divided among the candidates. In 48 states, the candidate who gets the most votes wins all of the state’s electoral votes. But the Constitution doesn’t require that rule. Maine and Nebraska have implemented district- by-district voting. One electoral vote goes to the winner in each congressional district, and the remaining two electoral votes are awarded to the winner of the statewide popular vote. Assume, however, that a state enacts a law giving all its electoral votes to the presidential candidate who wins...

WASHINGTON – House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) called House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) a “stooge for the White House” due to his staff preparing a classified memo that reportedly alleges a controversial dossier was inappropriately used to renew a surveillance warrant against Trump campaign aide Carter Page. “The speaker has appointed somebody who's totally irresponsible, politicizing the process and really it should not be happening. For example, right now he's talking about releasing a document, releasing a document that is predicated on another document, that was put together on the basis of total misrepresentation. It's like the...

Areas ripe for politically popular reform are infrastructure, health care, guest-worker programs, and finance. In 2017, Republicans used the following combination for domestic governance: Try to pass entirely conventional Republican legislation, such as the tax reform passed in December, while President Trump stoked cultural feuds (with Democrats, the media, the NFL, etc.) and issued executive orders. Based on the approval ratings of both the president and Congress, and given Congress’s failure to pass any major legislation other than tax reform, this strategy has not been a resounding success. Donald Trump’s victory in the primary was an omen that conventional Republican...

If you thought President Donald Trump was great in 2017, you ain’t seen nothing yet: wait until Trump 2018, a report from Axios’s Mike Allen on Friday morning argues. Citing multiple sources who have met or spoken recently with the president, Allen reports that those in the know in Washington should expect the “full Trump” in 2018—the president’s upcoming second year. “If you ask some close to President Trump what worries them most about 2018, it’s not Robert Mueller’s probe,” Allen writes under a headline saying to expect Trump to be “unchained” in 2018. “It’s that establishment guardrails of 2017...

Republican congressmen Trey Gowdy joins former Rep. Jason Chaffetz and Rep. John Ratcliffe to reflect on the last year in Congress on FNC's 'The Ingraham Angle.' Gowdy, as the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, said he strongly supports Paul Ryan as Speaker but his fellow South Carolinian Sen. Tim Scott is the "best person in politics." "He and I are virtually inseparable," Gowdy said. Gowdy and Scott are currently co-writing a book about their "unlikely" friendship. "We have different views on some pretty serious issues, but we have just chosen to have a friendship some would call unlikely because...

The former chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee cautioned today that his party is "whistling past the political graveyard" if not concerned about midterm elections. So far, 27 House GOP incumbents have declared that they're not seeking re-election, compared to 15 Democrats. "When the American people give you a majority, the control of the House, the Senate and the presidency, they expect you to do something with it," Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.) told CNN, saying the party racked up "minor" wins until a major score with tax reform. "And I think over time that will help us a great...

One year after a Republican accused of sexual misconduct was elected president, and Democrats are the ones in turmoil about misogynistic behavior in their ranks. Renewed media attention on sexual harassment and assault led to the twin New York Times and New Yorker exposés on Harvey Weinstein, the Hollywood mogul and Democratic donor. But Democrats did not rally to protect one of their own, and his attempt to curry sympathy with a pledge to fight the NRA fell flat. The subsequent #MeToo phenomenon continues to upend the left-leaning political and media worlds, with accusations of inappropriate behavior ensnaring liberal darling...

In less than a month, Alabama voters will decide whether to send to the United States Senate a man accused of abusing and romantically pursuing teenage girls. If Roy Moore wins, it will mean his constituents either don’t believe or don’t care about the woman who says Moore assaulted her when she was 16, or the woman who says Moore kissed and touched her when she was 14, or the women who say Moore kept approaching them at the mall when they were teenagers. And a Moore victory will set the standard that someone who is the subject of multiple...

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) said she would support repealing the Affordable Care Act’s individual insurance mandate, giving a potential boost to the Republican effort to pass a massive tax cut package next week. “I believe that the federal government should not force anyone to buy something they do not wish to buy, in order to avoid being taxed,” Murkowski wrote in an opinion piece published Tuesday by the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. Murkowski was careful, however, to stop short of saying she would vote for the Senate GOP tax plan. She instead focused the entire op-ed on her views about the...

Senate Republicans have included $1.6 billion for the first installment of President Trump’s border wall in the new homeland security spending bill released Tuesday, keeping the president’s marquee immigration plan on track. While avoiding the term “wall,” the Senate bill calls for $1.6 billion in funding for “physical barriers” and border roads — matching Mr. Trump’s original request for money to build or repair fencing along 74 more miles of the U.S.-Mexico line....
